Unfortunately, I'm running XP Pro, and it seems that I need to be running XP Media Center Edition (MCE) to be able to stream video to the 360.I'm considering "crossgrading" (or downgrading?) from XP Professional to MCE, and my question is: is this a simple and easy process? Can I just pop in the MCE install disk, and have it install without having to format my hard drive and start fresh, losing all of my files/settings? Is this even a good idea to start with?
I recently formatted my drive and am trying to reinstall my WIndows XP Pro.When I put in the CD and the PC starts up I receive a message: "Invalid System Disk. Replace the disk and then press any key"I have already changed my BIOS so that it boots from the CD first. Not sure what the problem is? prior to that error message, it states that I should "press any key to boot from CD"...when I try to push a key nothing happens. I know my keyboard works since I used it to enter the BIOS.
I have been looking on Ebay at used/refurbished computers for upgrading from my current and older P4 chip computer. One that I'm looking at says that it has a (legal and genuine version) of Windows XP Pro SP3 o/s installed on the custom built computer, but there's no disk. If I were to purchase a computer like this, and make a back up copy of that installed o/s on my own disk, will there be any difference than if I had received the original installation disk or manufacturer's restore disk?.....or would the installed (and backup) o/s be considered an "unlicensed" copy?
Have new build but can't install OS using Gateway install disks have PC with the followings P5KPL-AM SE motherboard
-Intel dual core E2200 -2 gig ddr2 memory -40 gig IDE hard drive (wiped clean) (have Gateway install disks for Windows XP Home with key # and coa sticker taped to jewel case) -Sony CD-RW (CRX230AE) -5in1 card reader
A storm knocked out my hard drive (through a surge protector). Dell sent me a replacement and I installed Windows XP on it. I hooked up my old hard drive to try to rescue stuff and, for a few hours, was able to see the corrupted old hard drive because, at one point during the evening among many reboots, the system did a diagnostic on the drive where it repaired sectors and index files, etc. Eventually I could not see the hard drive any more and I don't know how to get these diagnostics to run again since the drive is not even recognized as being there.
I'm having a Windows installer problem that is giving me fits. I've tried everything I can find on line and nothing has worked. I'd like to do a repair install, but the only software I got from Dell will wipe out my system and restore it to it's original state. Since I've got the license for it that came with my computer, can I get an XP Home install disk somewhere I can use to do this? I'm assuming it's legal to do this - am I wrong?
Is it possible to install a 2nd Hard Disk, install XP on that, and then have the 1st Hard Disk boot menu offer the choice of booting its copy of XP, OR the copy on the 2nd Hard Disk?I imagine editing of boot.ini by hand would be necessary.Basically, I want a second Hard Disk for the KID'S setup, but don't want to use the BIOS to switch between the two, just use the boot menu.
i have a windows xp installation disk that came with my old dell pc.would it matter it i tried using that dell windows xp disk on my acer laptop? the acer has vista and it just doesnt run all that great with that os on it. do you think that windows xp would give me any trouble installing it since its not a dell machine?
My XP Home recovery disk will not install or repair anymore (the last few days I did have it up and running - but after trying to install SP2 it's crashing again). So my final chance to get this system back up and running is to try and install a "retail version" XP Pro to a new hard drive.
Can you perform a 'full installation' from a product that is listed as "upgrade" I found what I feel is a good deal on eBay - the blurb states that you can (boot from CD drive) and then when promted just insert your original XP Home or WIN98 disk which sorts out the "key problem". I have listed what this Power Seller says - I have also emailed previous buyers who say it's a great product - legal etc. But these buyers had installed over a working copy of Windows 2000 and XP Home....
First off I've searched this but haven't found the relavent information I'm looking for. Chances are I've looked or searched in the wrong places.I've heard I need to boot from disk then format, to do a clean XP install when do I format and how. Also, I'm going to be getting more RAM very shortly, probably tomorrow, and I think this is the majority of the slow, lagging problems I've been having with the laptop (only 256 now) and I was wondering if I should hold off on the re-install untill I put the new RAM in there or does that not matter.
Old HDD really fricked up. Bought new HDD from NEWEGG & I cannot install XP on new hdd. XP cd loads and when it gets to partition screen, all four lines say "Unknown disk"-"There is no disk in the drive". BIOS recognizes the new hdd but XP cd does not. System: Dell XPS Gen 5 3.0, 4GB RAM, 250GB BARRACUDA 7200RPM HDD (ALL COMPATIBLE)
I want to install a second disk to my PC, but I am not sure what the "exact" way to do as I heard something like "master/slave", setting jumper, etc. Can anyone guide me the installation?
I have been told that instead of having to buy another retail version of an operating system as long as I have the install disk all I have to do is get a product key through Microsoft for like 50 bucks. How Do I go at doing this I am looking at getting a product key for Windows Xp Pro 32bit.
I orignally had Service pk one and my computer was updated with the service pack 2 via automatic update...when I try to install the fax console it asks for the service pack 2 cd..I don't have the disk..is there any work around issue
I just built a computer today, and I'm trying to install Windows XP Pro with SP2. The CD boots fine, but once I have done the initial setup I get a Disk Boot Error every time I restart, unless I manually intervene and again boot from the CD (in which case I can finish the installation and everything works fine, except that I can only boot from the CD).I have done some searching, but although lots of people have had similar problems, I'm not finding a solution that works for me.
am trying to install WIN XP on a wiped hard drive. When installing we get a blue screen with unmountable boot volume. The computer is a dell latitude d630, wiped with bcwipe, using streamlined xp install sp3. This issue has happened on mulitple systems. We have used the install disk in other systems and it works. The only step we have not tried is a putting the hard disk in another system. I wondering if there is anything that could cause this besides a corrupt hard disk.
I disconnected my harddrive from my Dell(DimensionL933r) computer and installed it into my Dell(Optiplex GX1) in an attempt to access the drive(which was not letting me in,Hanging at loading personal settings).I could not get the proper drivers or something so I did not get it installed. When I returned it to the computer it came from, its not coming up as installed. How do I install the hard disk with no windows or recovery console? Or the second question how do I get the hard disk connected to my good computer(Optiplex GX1) so I can fix it? Optiplex GX1 has Windows XP Pro and Dimension L933r has Windows 2000 pro. The hard disk is Seagate ST340213a
I tried to install a operating system disk xp pro which was supposed to be an unnattended install, but I wish I had attended now, I dont know what its done but when I came back it had a message 'setup cannot copy the file irmk7w2k to skip this file press escape to quit setup press f3 to retry press enter' I decided to quit setup and run my own os disk again I have used this disk plenty of times but this time it came up with the same message that I got on the other disk. So I thought something had been left on the harddrive so I put my wipe clean cd in to clean the hard drive and then I formatted and I was still getting the same message on setup. How can this be happening and how do I fix it? Thanks. I have an os on now but it is corrupted and I cannot get online there are plenty of files missing because I pressed skip this file plenty of times just to get some sort of operating system on. I really need help I am typing this on another pc.
I am attempting a clean installation of Windows XP on a new disk. I have 3rd party drivers to install but the system at this step fails to recognize the floppy drive. At least it fails to respond to the F6 > S > 'Insert ... floppy disk ...' sequence. The drive is required for the floppy disks on which the drivers are located.
Is there a way around this, putting them on a CD or USB since some computers are coming now without floppy disks.
BTW the floppy drives works with an Alt. Boot using Win 2K Pro
I have installed SP2, my windows folder is now 2,5 GB. Which folders can I delete or move to CD to free up more disk space ? Service Pack Files = 509 MB Software Distribution = 598 MB
I have a Dell Dimension L866r with 512 mb. of ram . I have my bios set to boot from CDrom first, then my harddrive. When I boot my computer up with the XP Home disk in it all I get is Invalid System disk.
I got my master disk crashed and now I have replaced the disk and installed the new WinXP.How can I connect the old crashed master disk back to the bus and installed as the slave disk.I guess the old disk is not crashed seriously and I am trying to recover some of the data.I have tried to connect the old crashed disk to the slave position and have the jumper setting correct. However, the BIOS does not detect both of them and complains cannot find any OS.
I just installed XP on a new 106GB HD. Somehow I created a primary partition of 7.81GB letter I. That left me 141.23 GB of unallocated disk space. I've already installed my OS and most of my software and other peripherals. That's obviously used most of the 8GB of the primary. The unallocated part of the drive isn't assigned a drive letter so I'm hoping that helps me. I don't need a partition or if I have to have one a small one is fine. I thought the 8GB would be good for the OS with some extra, but I'm real concerned about all that unused space. I did a google and did learn about right clicking on the unallocated side and selecting new partition and taking it from there. I was just a little concerned about making a 2nd mistake. A little frazzled as this is all within 3 hours.
Currently i have 2 hard drives, a 40gb and a 160gb. I have winxp on the 40 bg (single c: partition) as well as some files, and data and music on the 160 gb (about 50 or so gb full one partition-F. I want to take the F drive, the bigger one, and put it in my new computer. also, i want to install winxp PRO on the F: drive. so,can i add another partition on there now (so i dont lose files- i have insufficient room to backup F to C) and install xp pro, can i move the harddrive later and install xppro? basically, i want to lose no data and am unsure i have enough room to backup F, is there a way or program i can use to add a nother partition to an already formatted disk, what is the best way to do this?
I want to reinstall Windows XP on our Toshiba laptop but I don't want to reinstall from the Toshiba disks due to the bloatware that the disks installs (like the disk utility, antivirus, etc software). I'd like to install the OS from a Microsoft Windows XP CD but wondered if the Microsoft disk would even install onto the Toshiba and if so, would the laptop function properly? Thanks.
In a little bit of a situation. My laptop is not loading up, after about 20secs it states "Disk read error occurred- CLT+ALT+DEL to restart. But it just happend again and again. I've been reading around and everyone is saying just use the xp install disk to repair the master boot, problem is I have moved that many time is the past 2years I have no idea where that CD is.I've downloaded DiskInternals Boot CD and it will start on this. But it wont actaully repair the disk, just scan it I've used diskcheck via cmd on the boot cd but it states there is a master boot registry failure.
ve just reinstalled the operating system on my pc as it was running very slow and kept hangin, all is working fine but i now have no sound through my speakers at all,and cannot find the drivers disk for my motherboard how can i get my sound back
I had bought several hard drives as is, hoping one of them would work. thought I had one, but turned out I couldn't install XP onto the disk, wouldn't copy any files. so I pretty much cut my loss on the drives and removed it the bad one from pc. now I get 2 options when booting windows. my original xp install, and the 2nd install that still needs to complete, how can I stop it from wanting to install xp again from the boot file and keep the original settings as they were?
