Clean Install Without Floppy Disk?
Apr 24, 2005Does Windows XP self boot and copy the necessary system files or do you still need a floppy disk drive like previous windows versions?

I am attempting a clean installation of Windows XP on a new disk. I have 3rd party drivers to install but the system at this step fails to recognize the floppy drive. At least it fails to respond to the F6 > S > 'Insert ... floppy disk ...' sequence. The drive is required for the floppy disks on which the drivers are located.
Is there a way around this, putting them on a CD or USB since some computers are coming now without floppy disks.
BTW the floppy drives works with an Alt. Boot using Win 2K Pro

Mar 22, 2006I recently formatted my drive and am trying to reinstall my WIndows XP Pro.When I put in the CD and the PC starts up I receive a message: "Invalid System Disk. Replace the disk and then press any key"I have already changed my BIOS so that it boots from the CD first. Not sure what the problem is? prior to that error message, it states that I should "press any key to boot from CD"...when I try to push a key nothing happens. I know my keyboard works since I used it to enter the BIOS.

Chances are I've looked or searched in the wrong places.I've heard I need to boot from disk then format, to do a clean XP install when do I format and how.Also, I'm going to be getting more RAM very shortly, probably tomorrow, and I think this is the majority of the slow, lagging problems I've been having with the laptop (only 256 now) and I was wondering if I should hold off on the re-install untill I put the new RAM in there or does that not matter.

Dec 20, 2005I am trying to install a dual boot system on XP but I am unable to boot from the floppy dirve with a Windows ME bootable disk. The A drive is the first thing in the bios and it is set for 3.5, 1.44mb size disk. At the very bottom of the bootup screen, it shows "Floppy Disk Fail (40). The floppy drive works ok whenever XP is up and running in that I can put a floppy in the drive and open it and view the files, copy the files and most anything I need to do. I have read everything I can find on that error but since the drive seems to work ok other than for boot up, it has me stumped.

Aug 7, 2009My problem is when I turn on my Dell 5100 I get a floppy disk failure message and it instructs me to hit f-1 which then allows me to boot up. I dont have a floppy disk and this is slowing start up. What can I do to fix this? I went into Bios to try and fix this, nothing has worked. Sep 22, 2005I have been trying to transfer my "favorites" from my old computer (windows 98) to my new one with windows XP. When I copy the favorites onto the floppy I can see that they are all there. BUT, when I put that floppy into my new computer it changes the favorites contents to those on the new computer. For instance: I had probably 100 sites to copy and my new computer favorites only has about 10 sites. Now those 10 sites are on the floppy and not the 100 I placed there.....I'm confused.

Jul 11, 2007I'm having problems with windows xp on a laptop with preinstalled vista that has no floppy drive, the error "It doesn't detect the SATA HDD"; I tried the solution with a usb floppy drive and pressing f6, I found the correct driver and it works fine, I`m able to partition the HD and the process continues until it asks for the driver again but the USB floppy drive doesn't wortk in that part of the installation.
The next solution I found of this forum was making a custom XP CD including the SATA drivers with NLITE software, incredible software, without pressing f6 the HD is detected and again I'm able to partition and the installation begins, almost success!! but ... when it reboots to continue the installation it does't detect the HD again a lecture error displays and the classic press ctrl+alt+del to reboot!!! Am I missing something?

When it asks to press F6 to install the third party drivers will I be able to load off the motherboard driver cd, or does it *have* to be a floppy.? Reason is the folder that contains the driver info on the cd is over 6mb so obviously won't fit on a floppy..and I'm not sure which I need to complete the install. Feb 21, 2006Just downloaded the "Checkit PE Diagnostic ESD for DriverAgent" onto a floppy diskette as directed by DriverAgent.com. After placing it into the floppy drive and rebooting as directed, the program began to boot but hung up about halfway through the process and the PC would not boot until I removed the flopppy and then all worked well, except.now the floppy drive will not respond to any commands and the PC freezes completely. It will not respond until I manually shut it down from the tower button. Once I fire it up again all is well until the same happens if I try to use the floppy drive.

I make sure to have no major tasks running and sometimes I don't even touch the computer while it's running. But it freezes.After I cancel it, my computer goes soooo slow, so I in the running processes using Ctrl + Alt + Delete I notice that my computer is at 100% usage, and that the Disk Clean-up is still running even though the window has been closed and the task has been canceled.What can I do so it stops this? Tried to uninstall other two programs but Windows 'Disk Clean Up' does not work or, at least never completes a scan.Dell assisted but said computer is fine - reinstall Win-XP.Is there another solution before I re-nstall Windows?

Aug 22, 2008I did a disk clean up, it wouldn't get rid of all temporary internet files. So I went into the registry. Instead of deleting the file i deleted the whole thing. Disk clean up is still there but it doesn't have any of the categories. I tried to do system restore. For some reason it owuldn't let me. I was going to do a windows fix-up but my cd said that I have a newer verson of what was on the cd. Im at a loss. I have searched google for some time now and can't come up with any solutions. I thought about just downloading another product that does the same thing, but I would really like to put the orginal stuff back on if I can.

It failed while installing "Visual Studio Web Authoring Component". I extracted this component and attempted to install it 'on its own' and it failed.
