Clean Install From OEM Recovery Disk!?

Jan 5, 2007

First off I've searched this but haven't found the relavent information I'm looking for. Chances are I've looked or searched in the wrong places.I've heard I need to boot from disk then format, to do a clean XP install when do I format and how. Also, I'm going to be getting more RAM very shortly, probably tomorrow, and I think this is the majority of the slow, lagging problems I've been having with the laptop (only 256 now) and I was wondering if I should hold off on the re-install untill I put the new RAM in there or does that not matter.

Clean Install / Invalid System Disk. Replace The Disk

Mar 22, 2006

I recently formatted my drive and am trying to reinstall my WIndows XP Pro.When I put in the CD and the PC starts up I receive a message: "Invalid System Disk. Replace the disk and then press any key"I have already changed my BIOS so that it boots from the CD first. Not sure what the problem is? prior to that error message, it states that I should "press any key to boot from CD"...when I try to push a key nothing happens. I know my keyboard works since I used it to enter the BIOS.

Floppy Disk Not Recognized In Clean Install

Oct 3, 2009

"Floppy Disk not Recognized in Clean Install"

I am attempting a clean installation of Windows XP on a new disk. I have 3rd party drivers to install but the system at this step fails to recognize the floppy drive. At least it fails to respond to the F6 > S > 'Insert ... floppy disk ...' sequence. The drive is required for the floppy disks on which the drivers are located.

Is there a way around this, putting them on a CD or USB since some computers are coming now without floppy disks.

BTW the floppy drives works with an Alt. Boot using Win 2K Pro

Recovery Disk Will Not Install / Repair

Oct 19, 2007

My XP Home recovery disk will not install or repair anymore (the last few days I did have it up and running - but after trying to install SP2 it's crashing again). So my final chance to get this system back up and running is to try and install a "retail version" XP Pro to a new hard drive.

Can you perform a 'full installation' from a product that is listed as "upgrade" I found what I feel is a good deal on eBay - the blurb states that you can (boot from CD drive) and then when promted just insert your original XP Home or WIN98 disk which sorts out the "key problem". I have listed what this Power Seller says - I have also emailed previous buyers who say it's a great product - legal etc. But these buyers had installed over a working copy of Windows 2000 and XP Home....

Disk Clean-up Freezes

Dec 10, 2004

I have XP Home, and every time I run Disk Clean-Up, the program kind of freezes. I make sure to have no major tasks running and sometimes I don't even touch the computer while it's running. But it freezes. After I cancel it, my computer goes soooo slow, so I in the running processes using Ctrl + Alt + Delete I notice that my computer is at 100% usage, and that the Disk Clean-up is still running even though the window has been closed and the task has been canceled. What can I do so it stops this? How can I successfully run Disk Clean-up?

Disk Clean Up Categories

Aug 22, 2008

I did a disk clean up, it wouldn't get rid of all temporary internet files. So I went into the registry. Instead of deleting the file i deleted the whole thing. Disk clean up is still there but it doesn't have any of the categories. I tried to do system restore. For some reason it owuldn't let me. I was going to do a windows fix-up but my cd said that I have a newer verson of what was on the cd. Im at a loss. I have searched google for some time now and can't come up with any solutions. I thought about just downloading another product that does the same thing, but I would really like to put the orginal stuff back on if I can.

On Clean Install, Cant Install Office

Jun 17, 2008

This one has really got me stumped, and even worse, I need this stuff installed ASAP,So yesterday I formatted/install windows xp pro sp2, I did my usual thing, windows updates, fire fox,Skype. I then tried to install MS Office 2007 Enterprise. I (still do) recieved the following error message, "Setup cannot find Office.en-usdwtrig20.exe. Browse to a valid installation source, and then click OK", allowing me to browse for dwtrig20.exe.dwtrig20.exe IS THERE, the installation works perfectly on another machine of mine!I then tried to install MS Visual Studio 2008 Pro, this time, i received an error while trying to install Visual Studio. It failed while installing "Visual Studio Web Authoring Component". I extracted this component and attempted to install it 'on its own' and it failed.

Slow Disk Clean Up Utility?

Feb 2, 2009

As part of my monthly maintenance checks I ran Disk Clean up and it took so long to complete that it was almost like a drive-defrag. I had to cancel out of it at least once I try it in safe mode because I was sure it was hanging. Only it wasn't hanging, just running slow. The part that took forever was NOT the pre part where it estimates how much space you can free on the disk. That was done in a few minutes. It was when running Disk Clean up and it was doing the "Compress Old Files" part. It took at least 45 minutes. When I went into Safe Mode, as part of Disk Clean Up, I check something that I think was called "Temporary Index File Searching." that I did not see before in Normal Mode. Why would Disk Clean Up take 3-5 times longer to complete than usual?

Boot Disk Is Full / How To Clean Out?

Nov 27, 2005

I have partitioned my main hdd 200gb into 15gb for boot( C: drive) and 2 other data drives.I am getting messages from some apps that the C: drive is nearly full. Looking at it, I have only 28MB left. I have not installed anything on that drive but it is nearly full. Not sure where the rest of the space has gone because that is basically all that is on that drive. My computer has been booting and running slowly for a few months now or slower than in the past. I figure it is partly due to this disk issue. Is there a tool or way to clean up the disk and make the computer run faster like when I freshly built it? Do I need to reinstall windows and start all over?

I suggested to do a disk-clean up, defrag, etc. first and she tried, but she said that the disk-clean up will just hang and if she tries anything else even to cancel it, the system will freeze up.Any ideas? Is it spyware? Or should she just do a whole reformat?

Clean Or Re-Install Of XP

Feb 23, 2010

I am unable to reinstall my HP printer driver and accompanying software and after spending more than enough time trying to remedy the problem, I've decided to reload Windows XP either by a clean install or a reinstall per this thread. I hope to get some advice here. The details that led to the problem of being unable to install my printer drivers and my attempts to remedy the problem are very long and drawn out and may not be relevant to this post or my desired solution, so I will not go through them unless requested. Suffice it to say that I have spent a good 30 hours attempting to remedy the problem, with a good portion of that time spent with free HP Support. None of their "fixes" or any of my own attempts after lots of research have been successful.

I have installed XP several times on several different machines and thus, I'm very confident with a routine install. However, due to a special configuration on this computer, I need some advice.First: Will a reinstall per this thread potentially fix my printer problem? I know there may not be a definitive answer here, but I would just like to get some feedback. If more detail is needed on the problem, I will be happy to provide it.Second: Due to space restraints on my boot drive (18 GB SCSI drive), I moved the Documents and Settings folder to a large IDE storage drive (E:) on this machine. Will I be able to refer to the Documents and Settings folder during a clean install, so that all of the current settings will load? If not, is there a solution for getting the current settings loaded into the clean XP install?
