Unknown Virus In Fresh Install

Feb 11, 2007

I recently decided to switch from Windows XP to Windows 2000, since XP is very slow on my old computer. I did a fresh install, on a fresh partition of my completely blank 20 gig hard drive. All went well. I installed the drivers for my SATA PCI controller and my network card.As soon as I plugged in my ethernet cable (I have 1.5 MB DSL service), I started getting popup windows giving me links to fake virus scanning sites, saying my system has critical errors, etc. I know this is all fake. I ignored it at first, but then they just kept coming. It's not just the same message, either; I see about 10 different ones popping up every few minutes or so.

I recently formatted my drive and am trying to reinstall my WIndows XP Pro.When I put in the CD and the PC starts up I receive a message: "Invalid System Disk. Replace the disk and then press any key"I have already changed my BIOS so that it boots from the CD first. Backup Copy To Disk Of An Installed The Same As Original Install Disk?

Jul 18, 2008

I have been looking on Ebay at used/refurbished computers for upgrading from my current and older P4 chip computer. One that I'm looking at says that it has a (legal and genuine version) of Windows XP Pro SP3 o/s installed on the custom built computer, but there's no disk. If I were to purchase a computer like this, and make a back up copy of that installed o/s on my own disk, will there be any difference than if I had received the original installation disk or manufacturer's restore disk?.....or would the installed (and backup) o/s be considered an "unlicensed" copy?

BSOD Error/Unable To Re-install / New Install?

Dec 5, 2007

After suffering months of freezing PC and blue screens (primarily the dreaded kernel stack error. I have done tried all the recovery tricks from here and MS website, done chkdsk /f & /r repeatedly over four days without using the PC in between, and all the other stuff from here and Microsoft. Bought an expensive Reg cleaner and run it repeatedly. No luck. No recently installed soft or hardware. New Dell desktop. 1 year of trouble-free life until this. I now boot from the recovery XP CD (it includes SP2) to try to reformat the whole shebang and it gets as far as loading setup files OK, then as usual tries to start load windows installation and ... blue screen. STOP error 0x0000007B (OXF78D2524 OXC0000034, OX00000000, OX00000000).
Decided to buy a new HDD and install XP on that. (3 weeks from Dell!) and in machine. Old one disconnected. Tried installing XP from disk. It stalls at exactly the same moment as before (loads up preliminary files, gets to ""starting Windows" and then the dreaded blue screen with the same error message as before. 0X0000007B (OXF78D2524, 0XC0000034, 0X00000000, 0X00000000). So presumably not HD (although always good to have one). Have downloaded Memtest and run it for 24 hours. No RAM errors reported.

Pop In Mce Install Disk

Unfortunately, I'm running XP Pro, and it seems that I need to be running XP Media Center Edition (MCE) to be able to stream video to the 360.I'm considering "crossgrading" (or downgrading?) from XP Professional to MCE, and my question is: is this a simple and easy process? Can I just pop in the MCE install disk, and have it install without having to format my hard drive and start fresh, losing all of my files/settings? Is this even a good idea to start with?

Disk Spce Unable To Recognise

Oct 24, 2008

I have a Western Digital 200GB second hard drive with two partitions on it and I wanted to make it a single drive. (both partitions were empty and had been formatted). Using "System Explorer" I deleted the partition but the drive capacity still reads 127 Gigabytes -- which was the size of the larger of the two partitions. In the "disk management" tab of System Explorer the graphic display shows one drive where there was two (and a longer "bar") but I can't seem to get the computer to recognize the new size. I've checked it, defragmented it, and begged with it but so far nothing works. I also downloaded and tried a program called "HDD Capacity Restore" but it says the "device has to be single on a channel", which it is not.

Can't Boot From Install Disk

Aug 2, 2005

A storm knocked out my hard drive (through a surge protector). Dell sent me a replacement and I installed Windows XP on it. I hooked up my old hard drive to try to rescue stuff and, for a few hours, was able to see the corrupted old hard drive because, at one point during the evening among many reboots, the system did a diagnostic on the drive where it repaired sectors and index files, etc. Eventually I could not see the hard drive any more and I don't know how to get these diagnostics to run again since the drive is not even recognized as being there.
