Permenantly Deleting Registry Folders
Feb 2, 2006
I have some registry folders that I NEED to permanantly delete Unfortunatly, every time I delete the folder and restart the computer, windows XP Pro puts it back. Is there a way to permanantly delete the backups (either the backups that windows makes or the folder in the registry itself) so that windows doesnt restore the deleted folder?

I'm trying to clean up my computer to organize all my files and clean up some of this mess. I recently transfered some old "Favorites" via CDrom from my old computer to this computer. I created a temporary folder in "Favorites" to stick them in. Now that it's been emptied and all the links have been sorted, XP wont let me delete the folder. It keeps saying that it's a system folder and Window's needs it. (Although what for, I can't imagine, it seemed to do fine without it).
I've left clicked on it and gone into Properties and tried numerous times and unclicked "Read-only" with no luck. I have been able to change the name of the folder, but it still wont let me delete it. I've had a similar problem with my Start Menu that's yet to be fixed. A long time ago I tried "Safe Mode", but certain files still wouldn't delete.

Using explorer to search through the temp internet folders, I find there are
a few files that are not being deleted. About 30 of them are named
"size=1x1&name=ATAtracker..etc.etc..gif" at 1KB in size. In another folder
also under the Temporary Internet Files | Content.IE5, is a file
"makeplaylist.dll%3F....etc.etc..asx". In another folder 2 files from a
Playstation 2 website both filenames starting with
"Network=ugo&size=....etc.etc..html". There are more folders yet, but this
serves as enough. The right click on the filename does not render the
delete option. Depressing the keyboard delete button does not cause the
file to delete nor even bring up the confirmation window for deleting.
Trying to delete the folder(s) themselves, even in Safe Mode brings up a
message saying "Cannot delete Size_1~1.gif. Cannot find the specified file.
Make sure you specify the correct path and filename." In folder attributes,
there is the read only option to check or uncheck.

I noticed that the greatest time consumption when doing a registry scan on my laptop takes place in the following path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionInternetSettin gsone MapDomains. Many of the domain names that appear in this path are places visited online which I can recognize. Broadband connection doesn't require the kind of caching needed prior to this technology.I feed my curiosity about the most mundane topics and spend hours a day on the net.I rarely return to the same site unless I find it useful then I bookmark the site. Can I delete this seeming history of domains visited from the registry without fear of creating a catastrophic situation when searching the net?

Have an issue that I couldn't find a solution in Google or on these forums, so I am going to post. When deleting a file/folder from an WinXP desktop, typically it would go to the Recycle Bin, incase I need it for later. In this case, it isn't.its just deleting. Not ending up in the Recycle Bin, and no chance to recover.
Is there anyway to change so that they end up in the Recycle Bin first, before being deleted?

I tried to delete the registry entries which were bad, I had 30 of them, but the these two will just not go away, even by doing them manually, such as saving as a backup then deleting it manually and remerging. They just show up no matter what I do, or so use programs like Registry Mechanic, which I found only mediocre, very far from the ratings. to delete these two entries somehow from someone who is actully knows how to without using several so called registry cleaners, which only work partially.

but i got a music folder with close to 100 seperate artist folders inside....all of which contain mp3's from various artists. (About 1200 mp3 files all inside these 100 folders...all inside 1 folder if that makes any sense)I'm thinking about moving all those mp3's outside there folders so that i have just one continuous stream of mp3's. Basically i want just my mp3's inside the main folder without their individual artist folder.

On my box at home, I have Norton System Works, which contains a registry diagnostic/sweeper.At work, where I run Windows 2000 Pro, I was wondering...I know there are various registry diagnostic & cleaner utilities out there on the web, but I thought I had heard that Windows itself either includes one on the OS disc or makes one available for download. Is there such a thing as an official Windows Registry utility?

When I run defrag on my C drive, the program tells me that there are certain files that cannot be defragmented. When I go to delete these files, I am not able to find them on my hard drive. It tells me that the files are in C:\WINDOWSTemp but when I look in that folder no such files exist. When I check the properties of the folder, it tells me there are 4 GB in it but it only shows 4 MB worth of files. How can I delete these files when I can't find them

I have been trying to delete an old Windows file on one of my hard disks, but i never could because of the "access denied" error message. No matter what i did, they couldn't be deleted. So finally, i stumpled across a site that explained that the files need to have the right "ownership" to delete. So, i follow the instructions and set me as the owner, but it will only do that to one folder. I then have to go one by one and set the properties for each sub-folder seperatley, and there's hundreds of them. Is there any way to delete all of the files without regard to what user owns them? Or how can i make ALL files AND subfolders be set at once

Hey there, i'm currently running on Windows XP with a 120 gig Maxtor Harddrive. During my last reformat I'm guessing I did it wrong and mistakenly made a second partition while leaving the old one intact. I've checked through all my biggest storage heaps for what could be causing my HD to be so full. But my multimedia section is only 28 gigs, whereas the harddrive is showing 85 gigs worth of used space.
Multiple partitions is the only thing I can think of. So is there a way I could find out if I have an extra partition, which one is the right one to delete, and the process of deleting it, possibly without having to transfer all my files. Any help would be appreciated.

So right now I want to format my computer and I am. Right now I am at the part where you can create/delete partitions. What I see right now is this.Unpartitioned Space 7MB D: Partition 2 [NTFS]182001 MB (181831 MB free) C: Partition 1(PRESARIO_RP) [FAT32] 8771MB (598 MB free), so I have two exact computers In my house and one of the disks I used to format wasn't working and was scratched so it got messed up at the end and I quit the installation. So now that up there happened Where do I install? Can I delete the other ones after picking the one I need to install in? And do I need to download something else after I delete those, like Partition 1.
