Feb 25, 2006My OS is Xp and IE is my browser. Where do I go to find exactly which version of IE I am using and if I should,or could, update?

Feb 20, 2006A friend of my daughters has a packard bell pc (4 years old). After ridding various virus from the machine and coming to a full stop they decided to use the restore disc (red floppy) and restore to factory default - all appeared to be going well. Machine froze after telling them to remove the floppy, when it came back to life it requested master cd1, which they dont have and dont remember ever having (bearing in mind machine is 4 years old). What do you think the best track would be to contact packard bell for master disc. I wondered whether my copy of xp home would work with their pc and their code - afterall they have purchased the machine etc. or am I being totally blonde. I am quite happy to reformat for them if this is a possibility but dont want to attempt it if there is the possibility it wont work. I realised xp is one machine one copy but not sure whether this is reliant on code or not.

Jan 2, 2008Is it possible to install a dell-made operating system on a non dell computer and have that computer be 100% and stable? I'm really not sure anymore. I thought so. I hope so because people are selling Dell operating systems for really cheap because anyone who buys a vista laptop from dell seems to get a windows XP CD too. My other thought is, what if I install a normal windows XP, but then use the Security code from a dell operating system.

Aug 18, 2005Running XP Media Center Edition, Version 2002, SP 2 I created several CD on our old computer running Win 98SE using autorun.inf file to automatically open an *.html page containing an index of the contains of the CD(s). The autorun.inf on those CDs don't work on any of our XP computers. The CDs are recognized easily by these computers running XP but won't open the autorun.inf files.
Nowww do note autorun CDs that come with programs, that we buy, run with no trouble which means the autorun option is definitely on. I have even copied the autorun.inf files from program/purchased CDs and changed the file to open name to the *.html file on the CDs and still they won't work. Again do note these CDs with autorun.inf that I created easily run on all our Win98 computers.
Internet Explorer Won't Work - Update Operating System
Oct 19, 2005daughter has an "emachine" (I know, but it's too late) with XP. Son opened a "cheats" from Google and now they can't open internet explorer at all. Just gives us the "sorry, we'll send error report." They can right click on the "explorer" icon and open by "run as" but they can't download anything, or open new pages (assuming the other pages are stored). They play a game called Ragnarok(sp??) and that may have something to do with it, not sure. Anyway, I've checked internet connections and she is enabled, I've run Winsock and that doesn't help, even loaded Foxfire browser to bypass, but it won't open either, just gives me the same message. We even updated with the XP2, still nothing

Jul 26, 2005Upgraded from Win me to XP home with sp2.I can load drivers for color laserjet 5 and when I send something to print the data light flashes,but nothing prints I reloaded the port and the drivers many times.I cannot print from notepad or the dos prompt.any way besides possibly getting a usb to centronics adapter I was able to set up a plotter from the usb port but not from the parallel port.

Jan 7, 2005Right after my computer is finishes booting, suddenly there's a prompt telling me that Internet Explorer wants to change my Internet Protection settings. Then it asks me if I want to give IE permission to change these settings. Of course not (I think?). And the problem is still there. I connect with Verizon DSL, but when I go on Internet Explorer, the browser doesn't work properly- it says "Web Page Unavavailable While Offline"- what's up with that?! I even checked the status of my connnection- "Connected"! It's just retarded.

Anyway, drwtsn32.exe always activates when this problem occurs, and wants to send a report. I have reviewed the contents of the report on several occasions and it basically shows the error in the same location every time with the identical error (I think). May 27, 2005Following removal of a few trojans worm and a viruses. My system is now clean and I have MS anti spy, spyware blast spybot and Norton Anti Virus. This lady has learned the lesson. However all is not well with my dell laptop. I connect to the internet but when online the following happens: System hangs can't get the mouse to close a window, save as in a document or change a web page. In fact the cursor is stuck on the hour glass. The only way out is to turn off the power and restart. Dont seem to have any problems off line.

When I open Internet Explorer, my home page (www.google.com) opens.When it is finished loading, it automatically redirets to yahoo mail login page. The catch is, all my browsers windows that are open will be changed too. If I hit "stop" before the page is loaded, then hit "refresh", this action does not occur. I have Microsoft updates automatically downloade do my computer. I have the latest MacAfee anti-virus on my computer and have run the latest scan. Aug 19, 2009I shut off the computer and turning it back on couldn't boot up windows. It gave the windows wasn't shut down properly and I tried the normal restart option and it would just give a black screen with a blinking _ and then nothing happens. Tried loading in safe mode but it gets to mup.sys then "Press Esc to cancel SPTD.sys" flashes below and whether I press Esc or let it be, nothing happens after that.
I tried popping in the windows xp disc that came with the laptop, boot from disc, it starts up but then after loading everything, it then says "Windows is starting up" the disc stops spinning then nothing happens. I tried popping in a windows vista disc and it says "Windows is loading files" with a progress bar, when it fills up, I get stuck with a blank black screen the disc stops spinning and then nothing happens.

Sep 12, 2008I tried to do a System Recovery today on my Sony laptop. Got 41% completed and had a fatal error. Options given were Ignore, Retry or Abort. Attempted a Retry. Got a fatal error message and everything locked up. I ended up shutting down and when I turned the computer on again it said no operating system found. Where did I screw up?
This is a six year old Sony, XP, AMD 1.0Ghz. Everything was working at the time I tried the System Recovery EXCEPT I was constantly getting low space messages for drive C. I have no files on this drive and very little software. It is a 20G hard drive partioned into two 10G partitions.

May 5, 2006Should I ever use one of the utility programs to wipe my hard drive completely, how do I reinstall Windows XP since the CD driver has been erased? How can you reinstall an operating system that is on CD when you have no driver for the CD player?
