When i turn on my computer it says xp profeesional but when i look in system its saying vista can some one help .plus when i put a dvd in it wont work at all but i cant see where to play on its drive
View 11 RepliesA friend of my daughters has a packard bell pc (4 years old). After ridding various virus from the machine and coming to a full stop they decided to use the restore disc (red floppy) and restore to factory default - all appeared to be going well. Machine froze after telling them to remove the floppy, when it came back to life it requested master cd1, which they dont have and dont remember ever having (bearing in mind machine is 4 years old). What do you think the best track would be to contact packard bell for master disc. I wondered whether my copy of xp home would work with their pc and their code - afterall they have purchased the machine etc. or am I being totally blonde. I am quite happy to reformat for them if this is a possibility but dont want to attempt it if there is the possibility it wont work. I realised xp is one machine one copy but not sure whether this is reliant on code or not.

I hope so because people are selling Dell operating systems for really cheap because anyone who buys a vista laptop from dell seems to get a windows XP CD too. My other thought is, what if I install a normal windows XP, but then use the Security code from a dell operating system.

View 8 Replies View RelatedRunning XP Media Center Edition, Version 2002, SP 2 I created several CD on our old computer running Win 98SE using autorun.inf file to automatically open an *.html page containing an index of the contains of the CD(s). The autorun.inf on those CDs don't work on any of our XP computers. The CDs are recognized easily by these computers running XP but won't open the autorun.inf files.
Nowww do note autorun CDs that come with programs, that we buy, run with no trouble which means the autorun option is definitely on. I have even copied the autorun.inf files from program/purchased CDs and changed the file to open name to the *.html file on the CDs and still they won't work. Again do note these CDs with autorun.inf that I created easily run on all our Win98 computers.
daughter has an "emachine" (I know, but it's too late) with XP. Son opened a "cheats" from Google and now they can't open internet explorer at all. Just gives us the "sorry, we'll send error report." They can right click on the "explorer" icon and open by "run as" but they can't download anything, or open new pages (assuming the other pages are stored). They play a game called Ragnarok(sp??) and that may have something to do with it, not sure. Anyway, I've checked internet connections and she is enabled, I've run Winsock and that doesn't help, even loaded Foxfire browser to bypass, but it won't open either, just gives me the same message. We even updated with the XP2, still nothing

View 8 Replies View RelatedUpgraded from Win me to XP home with sp2.I can load drivers for color laserjet 5 and when I send something to print the data light flashes,but nothing prints I reloaded the port and the drivers many times.I cannot print from notepad or the dos prompt.any way besides possibly getting a usb to centronics adapter I was able to set up a plotter from the usb port but not from the parallel port.

My mouse won't "pick up" any of them, on my desktop or within a folder. I can drag program windows around, so I don't think it's an issue with my mouse. I thought maybe a recent Windows Update had messed it up, so I uninstalled the most recent one, but it didn't do anything.

It gave the windows wasn't shut down properly and I tried the normal restart option and it would just give a black screen with a blinking _ and then nothing happens. Tried loading in safe mode but it gets to mup.sys then "Press Esc to cancel SPTD.sys" flashes below and whether I press Esc or let it be, nothing happens after that.
I tried popping in the windows xp disc that came with the laptop, boot from disc, it starts up but then after loading everything, it then says "Windows is starting up" the disc stops spinning then nothing happens. I tried popping in a windows vista disc and it says "Windows is loading files" with a progress bar, when it fills up, I get stuck with a blank black screen the disc stops spinning and then nothing happens.
Some time ago I booted up my computer,to find that my XP switched to Windows classic style,I didn't take it seriously so I went to properties to change when I get an error message saying there is a problem with run32.dll,not only that,but the visual styles can't load I assume,becuase of run32.dll,so now I'm stuck with the piece of s*** style.

Several new programs are installed, including Firefox, Winamp, desktop publishing, photo manager, and security software (not the antivirus, standalone scanners.) Everything appears to be fine.I log on to Windows Live OneCare to use their "Safety Scanner" to, as they say, check for PC health issues and optimize performance. Mind you, the site recommends users log on once a month for the full service scan. As you know, the scan includes the removal of what it refers to as invalid registry entries. "Oh boy," right? The registry. Except you'd like to believe the official Microsoft site won't screw up your programs.

Got a fatal error message and everything locked up. I ended up shutting down and when I turned the computer on again it said no operating system found. Where did I screw up?
This is a six year old Sony, XP, AMD 1.0Ghz. Everything was working at the time I tried the System Recovery EXCEPT I was constantly getting low space messages for drive C. I have no files on this drive and very little software. It is a 20G hard drive partioned into two 10G partitions.
Should I ever use one of the utility programs to wipe my hard drive completely, how do I reinstall Windows XP since the CD driver has been erased? How can you reinstall an operating system that is on CD when you have no driver for the CD player? The reason I am asking these questions is that I might want to give my computer to friend and I want my stuff off of the hard drive and my friend to be able to use the computer.

My computer was running smoothly that time with 2 hard disk's.I formatted my PC and installed windows xp.While installing windows xp i didn't connect my 80Gb hard disk.But after installation, when i tried to connect it , my computer started hanging.160Gb is my primary hdd and 80gb is secondary hard disk.I never had any OS on 80Gb. I have tried multiple restore points. Microsoft.com suggested that i verify that the task manager, WMI, and system restore services were running, and they are. I also tried disabling my antivirus program, but the same thing happens.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have read through the forums and didnt find anything related to my problem, i have bought a new PC and used my old harddisk with the same operating system, luckly i was able to access the harddisk and everything was working fine, i prefered to format and install a fresh XP, after installing all the drivers, everything was working fine, however sometimes the PC hangs and you can not click or move the nouse or do anything, no error message is poping and i have to restart the PC manually.

XP is 2002 version; SP ;, 2.3 GHz CPU; 2.29 GHz and 0.99 GB RAM.My virus/security suite is Zone Alarm.I tried to use System Restore and though it does shut and restart the computer, system restore tells me it could not restore the computer.
I have developed a very strange problem on my PC, everytime I have to press the reset button on my case, or there's a power cut when Windows reboots, it will boot to the desktop fine and I can move my mouse but no windows, no programs or anything will open.
I am trying to do a system recovery back to the original condition and I have taken what I need to save. I have talked to HP tech twice and 1 told me I need to buy a special automated recovery cd from them. The other said not to do that and I need to use the two cds I have (1. operating system cd, 2. Applications and Drivers dvd). Operating system is Windows XP professional on a HP laptop.I have completed the following steps. Can any one tell me if I am doing the right thing?
1)I put in the operating system cd and shut down the computer.
2) I started it back up useing the cd (by hitting any button when it asks).
3) I press Enter on the next menu to "set up windows xp now"
4) I press F8 to agree to license agreement
5) I press ESC "to continue installing afresh copy of windows xp without repairing". Below it has the following highlighted "C:windows "microsoft windows xp professional"
