my sis has a relatively new computer with windows xp installed...after using it for a couple of weeks she was unable to get to google...she system restored it and took it back a week and it was fine until yesterday...she turned it on..hit explorer and got a messege saying cannot find server...the strange thing is she is still able to download from a site...she ran a virus scan...nothing...adaware ...nothing.

Following removal of a few trojans worm and a viruses. My system is now clean and I have MS anti spy, spyware blast spybot and Norton Anti Virus. This lady has learned the lesson. However all is not well with my dell laptop. I connect to the internet but when online the following happens: System hangs can't get the mouse to close a window, save as in a document or change a web page. In fact the cursor is stuck on the hour glass. The only way out is to turn off the power and restart. Dont seem to have any problems off line.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI went to check my email, and found that IE became unresponsive. Thinking that it was just IE 8 being itself, I proceeded to End Task, and tried to re-open the browser. For some reason, it didn't work. I then decided to re-start the computer to see if that would make a difference. When I did, I found that after logging in, the desktop background would show, but nothing else. I let it sit for more than an hour to see if it would respond, but to no avail.
Then, I decided to start the computer in safe mode. This seemed to work fine, and so I assumed that it was some sort of Trojan that was causing my computer to behave abnormally. So, I went online and installed AVG, as Symantec Antivirus did not work in safe mode. But, since Symantec needed to be uninstalled, the computer shut itself down, and restarted. Only this time, the computer simply did not load past the logo screen. Once that screen closed, I got a black screen, with a flashing cursor on the top left hand corner. It's been sitting there for about an hour, and there has been no change.
Yesterday I used a system rescue disk to fix a problem with my sound drivers. The type of rescue was a non-destructive one - one that keeps all your files and programs but re-installs the original operating system and pre-installed software.I was running SP2 before the install and the rescue CD i have has installed SP1. Now the computer seems to be running a bit of both SP1 and SP2. I can't start the system restore program because the System Restore service keeps failing to start.I can't do a complete install/uninstall of SP2 because the Microsoft Installer Service also fails to start. I also get numerous errors at start up with processes that are used by my antivirus and printer. Could anybody suggest a way to fix this, maybe to install/reinstall SP2 without needing the MSI Service?

I have been trying to use my recover disks to set it back to specs with windows XP back on it. It will not read from the discs and boots up as normal. I do have a different CD drive but I didnt think that would affect the reading of the recovery discs. How can I get my PC restored?

Firefox, I have tried setting it as my default browser in the settings option, and in "Set programs access and defaults". It works quite well... Anyway, drwtsn32.exe always activates when this problem occurs, and wants to send a report. I have reviewed the contents of the report on several occasions and it basically shows the error in the same location every time with the identical error (I think). The error is always occurring here: C:Documents and SettingsDaddyLocal settingsTemp The only way I can unfreeze my computer when it locks up is by going to my task manager and ending task on one of TWO drwtsn32.exe's.

I cleaned the cache on the browser and when I went to open it, the browser asked for a profile like netscape does???? All of my bookmarks are gone. When I open Internet Explorer, my home page (www.google.com) opens.When it is finished loading, it automatically redirets to yahoo mail login page. The catch is, all my browsers windows that are open will be changed too. If I hit "stop" before the page is loaded, then hit "refresh", this action does not occur. View 14 Replies View RelatedI started my system, which has ran XP Pro well for 2 years now, and it came up with a message box with some gibberish in it and a button to push which says OK. When I press the button windows starts but none of the programs which used to load at start up actually load. Instead I am prompted to pick programs from a list or look for them on the web. Also, once this is past, the icons on the desktop and all the start menu items have the app name followed by a .ink extension. This is pretty wierd. I cannot figure out how to get the system back. I do have all of my data on my c drive. If I book to a prompt I can see all of my data.

It's an XP OS and I remember creating a restore point sometime over the summer. But now I go to System Restore and it doesn't show any restore points available except for these last few days after the crash (12/2/06). The furthest back it goes is a point on that Friday (12/2) at 6:11:23 PM called "System Checkpoint". But it gives me an error message after rebooting that says it was unable to restore it to that point and no changes have been made. Is there another way to restore my computer or access that earlier restore point?
