Been experiencing a very unusual period of "computer slowness" recently. What you need me to run so we can filter these things out?I ran these two already and deleted a bunch of stuff, but still seems to be a little slow on startup
Certain programs refuse to install after being executed. I know it has nothing to do with Anti-virus or firewall software. I've tried all that. It's not a DEP or compatibility problem either. I have found that VCom's System Suite has been a culprit but still hasn't solved the problem for all programs. It has happened when I try to install Lexmark printer software, Quickview, an old version of CloneCD, and some small applications. These programs will load and you can see the file name in the processes but nothing else will happen. I don't get any error codes or anything
I created a bit of a problem for myself. I was tryin to play Battlefield 1942 online when for some reason PkBstrB.exe wouldnt launch. So I got to playing around with it, and wound up setting it to open with wordpad so I could try and delete it. Next thing I know all my programs will only attempt to run with wordpad. not much I can do on that account now. How can I get this back to normal?
For some reason when I try to go to certain websites, i get a smart filter 403 forbidden error. I never installed any smart filter software on my computer? What could tbe problem be? My parents never installed anything on my computer. I'm confused. I cant find anything on add/remove programs
I just installed IE 8 on my notebook (WinXPsp3) and enable "SmartScreen Filter." However, when I exit IE 8 and then re-enter IE 8, the "SmartScreen Filter" is OFF.Someone said it should always be ON. Does anyone know why mine is turning OFF when I exit IE 8? Is that somethihg that happens with notebooks?
Any suggestions on how to keep "SmartScreen Filter" always turned ON?
I'm looking for the best Internet web filter available for Windows XP that provides the ability to be as transparent as possible. The idea isto be able to manage a filtering system without worrying about computersavy kids figuring out how to get into it and take control. Ideally thefilter would not show up anywhere in the windows GUI; for example, noicons/shortcuts or menu items created. If it can't be completelytransparent, at least something that can be configured to be highlyobscure.
Is there a way to filter out all incoming mail with the exception of names in my address book?I would like any other mail to be deleted immediately or not downloaded at all. If there is a Message Rule to use could you please tell me exactly how to word it?

This is the WinXP mouse accel tweak. It restores the feel of the mouse back to Win2K style. Very helpful for gamers and those sensitive to mouse movements. Navigate to [HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelMouse]Then, under SmoothMouseXCurve,
Does anyone know of a good anti spam filter I can download, please, to filter out spam BEFORE it gets to my in box in Outlook Express?someone suggested mailwasher, but apparently you have to go thru mailwasher first, a little inconvenient.I know Zone Alarm and Norton filter it out before it goes in, but separate from that, is there another programme that I can download that does it the same way??I am tired of getting a couple genuine emails, and 20-30 spam ...
I am trying to install XP Home Edition on an ECS KT600-A motherboard with an 80 gig hard drive and I get a message on the desktop that the VIA CPU to AGP 2.0/AGP 3.0 Controller is missing.
The message also states that the driver I need to correct this problem is on the VIA AGP Filter Driver Disk. I have tried to find this disk to download it but I have not been able to find it.
Does anyone know where I can download this disk? If so, what is the webaddress where I can download it?
while composing a letter and held down the shift key (or some key) longer than the computer thinks I should.....I got some message about filter keys - which I naturally have no idea what that is. Now I have an icon in lower right corner that is a little clock thing that says "FilterKeys". What have I done and what should I do now. I have clicked on it, but I have no idea what the "accessability options" are all about

My computer is taking a long time to open web pages..."the phishing filter is checking this site" seems like a really long time. Is there something to make this a quicker process? Is it safe to just turn it off? Even when i tried to open this site it took like a minute!
How come when I tried to update outlook 2003 junk email filter it keeps saying it failed. Then I tried to go to the website to download directly from them instead of windows but it still did not work. Also, when it said that i need to install activeX it failed because it does not know publisher. and the icon keeps popping up saying I have to update but everytime I try to update it it keep failing.
I would like to know if this can be done in win xp environment. say I have a folder, A, of pictures only and they all have file extensions jpg eg abc.jpg, xyz.jpg. say I have a second folder, B, which contains all the files of A(if you ignore extensions) and more(but all are pictures.) But all the files in B has extensions NEF instead of jpg eg abc.NEF, efg.NEF, xyz.NEF. My idea is to extract all the files from B that has the same the name as A(ignoring extensions) and either move or copy to a separate folder ie if A contains abc.jpg, xyz.jpg then abc.NEF and xyz.NEF will be extracted and moved/copied to a new folder. I'm not sure where to start. is there a program out there that can do this? or there's a special command to type at the command prompt?
Im trying to repair install windows XP on my computer.I get up to the actual instalation part and it gives me this message:'Please insert the Compact Disk labeled ' VIA AGP Filter Driver Disk' into your CDROM drive (and then click OK. You can also click OK if you want files to be copied from an alternate location, such as a floppy disk'If i click cancel my mouse locks up and my screen flashes on and off and when i reboot it starts up the installation normally again but gives me this message halfway through the instalation.
I want a program to run at startup and I want to be able to change what I have done at any time.
There are a number of unchecked entries in msconfig and I have to use Selective Startup all the time.
If I want to revert to Normal Startup under the General tab instead of Selective Startup, the program's box automatically rechecks itself in Startup.
The Startup tab gives me a handy record of what I did and allows for an easy change of mind so long as I continue to use Selective Startup.
If I edit the Registry to stop programs running at startup, they won't show in msconfig and I lose the handy record of how it was and I may have to reinstall the program to go back to it running at startup.
I would like to accomplish this:
1. Use Normal Startup instead of Selective Startup.
2. Have some programs not run at startup, but be able to easily change back to having them run at startup.
3. Have a readily accessible list of those programs and the details as shown under the Startup tab as a reminder of how it was without having to manually enter it all into a text file or keep a notebook or reinstall.
Is there some way to use Normal Startup, stop programs running at startup, but retain or find a list of those programs (including the details under the headings Startup Item, Command, Location) that is shown when using Selective Startup with unchecked boxes under the Startup tab?
To put it another way, use Normal Startup but somehow retain the convenient flexibility of Selective Startup.
My startup time went up drastically. I have disabled all but two of the automatic startup items using msconfig. My system used to start in less than two minutes, easily. Now it takes a more than a minute or two longer than that. I know what the problem is; the only three items that show in the system tray after startup are: 1) The AVG Antivirus icon . 2) The Spybot SD Resident icon. 3) Local Area Connection (This is the icon which shows two computer monitors with screens that light up and go dark periodically)
Now, after the problem started, the last item, the Local Area Connection icon is the one that doesn't load, for VERY long. So it may be something to do with that. Also, just before the icon finally shows up(after which point the computer is fine to use) I've notice that a Windows security notification icon appears...it flashes, for just a second, and then is replaced by the Local Area Connection icon. For the record, these are the two icons I'm talking about: http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p282/sw1sh1/LAC.jpg http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p...tification.jpg
I have had my automatic updates disabled for a while now, so you might think that that's the reason the notification is showing up but I've already disabled that notification using Windows Security Center.
Try making my laptop less slow and not freeze all the time when doing the simplest of tasks.
However, my problem happens after trying to disable the Startup Items from the MSconfig dialogue.
-After I have unchecked the boxes I don't want, I click OK or Apply;
-It then tells me I have to restart for the changes to take place, so I do this;
-Then after completing its restart a message says that "The System Configuration Utility is in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows starts up."
-it then opens the MSconfig dialogue box again.
If I just close the utility or click ok, sure enough it keeps on opening every time I startup. Or else, what it's trying to convince me to do is to start up in Normal Mode. But I won't do this because then all the Startup Items I'd disabled become enabled again and the whole lengthy task was a waist of time!
The run link is missing from my startup menu...can anyone help me find it? I know this sounds dumb, but I really need to restore it to my startup so I can take care of some other problems I'm having.
How do you remove the "Common Startup" items from the startup list in msconfig for Windows XP? I did locate and remove the "Run" items that are located in HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrent VersionRun.
Win XP Home edition. I'm in the Speed Up Windows Startup class. I currently have a very long list of startup programs running. Is it safe for me to disable all except security programs (Symantec Norton,AdAware,Spyguard)?Charles
I think I might need to do this. It's now impossible to click or d/click on a programme or even an email and have it open I have to click 6-10 times before the little hourglass appears.I think I need to change my startup : what do you think? Msconfig shows my startup options to be -Normal Diagnostic Selective Ought to to choose diag?Or Selective?because I can't decide which programmes I ought to remove and which to leave in, but I'm sure I have too many.
My sister's computer is running very slowly, particularly at startup (which seems to take forever). I've got Panda antivirus software running and do reasonably regular spyware scans with AdAware, but am not sure if the problem is just that the computer is old with too little memory / overheating because it's on almost all the time / something else I haven't thought of. To help me determine what's going on, could someone much smarter than myself take a look at this HJT log and see if you see anything of concern?
The problem is it takes an incredibly long time to startup because of these, once we close them it gets back to running fast, but until then we have to wait for them to open. I think it's causing the problem because we didn't have this problem until we installed this. How do I make it stop starting up on Windows XP? I sped up my startup on my computer by stopping useless things from running.
my pc is windows xp professional and I have DELL.my computer was infected with different types of jeefo trojan. I had removed many of them(Welchia and manu other i dont remember) but there was another trojans still in my computer which had infected all the .EXE files(Hidrag). so i installed karsperky antivirus. I ran a full system scan and got some virus but Hidrag trojan was still there. I had many .EXE files and I had to remove all of them by karsperky one by one. I decided to download a hidrag remover. during the scan time Microsoft antispyware showed me a message whether i want to allow a file to run at startup by that software and i clicked yes.after a while the software asked to restart my pc to scan network also, so i did. but after restart my pc didnt start, because after I enter my user password, it automatically log off and again user password window displays.
after this problem I tried safe mode and "using last windows setting'' but did not work.then I tried to repair it using my windows xp repair tool which only copy the windows file and other data remain there, and that also did not work. Please give me advice and solution to repair it.I have some data which are important for me and dont want to lose them. Even if there is a way to recover data, i will be formatting C drive.
