Lost Sound For Windows XP.
Sep 10, 2005
I own at Pentium 4 XP Home Edition PC. Recently, I lost all of my default system sounds--like boot up sound and closing sound. The sound card is okay, because I can play CDs, listen to Real Player and otherwise get sounds.I have gone into the sounds and audio devices properties panel and don't seem to be able to set it to play the sounds. The test button works the sounds fine, but I cannot actually activate them.I have troubleshooted by surfing the web, installing various supposed registry fixes. I have also read the Microsoft data base articles that seem to pertain. SO FAR NOTHING HAS HELPED.Can anyone suggest what I do short of reinstalling Windows? I don't want to take that drastic step!

Recently i had to basically kill my computer to rid it of viruses etc. i had a recovery disk that came with my laptop so i was able to rebuild windows xp as well as an lg disk that restored most of my settings and programs. except now i am without sound which is turning out to be a big pain in the butt. The device manager has only one yellow warning sign over 'Other Devices - PCI Device'. could this be the reason for my missing sound? or is there something else i need to do

I recently upgraded to XP from 98SE and as a result have no sound. Also when I play video files either through Windows Media Player or Real Player, the video stalls to a still frame for a couple of seconds and then moves on and then stalls again. It doesn't correspond with the time line. Can someone please provide me with a method to fix these two issues?

I have been having some squirely things happening like a blue screen with a code of 0x0000008e and my Picture It! software not working but now when I lost my sound for my email I checked the Sounds and Audio device in the Control Panel and now there is not even a selection for Email Notification. I have never seen this before. This is driving me nuts.

I installed XP SP3 and after the installation and a reboot I had lost my sound card + my VPN connection to the office no longer worked.
I could live without sound or could reinstall my sound card but the VPN connection to the office is critical to my daily work.

I have somehow misread your entire post. I thought you had a sound card installed. If it is the AC'97 codec here is the> download page for it. I believe it is the third one down:

I started another thread a couple of days ago but have progressed a bit since then so thought i would start a fresh one.I have recently formatted my hard drive and lost drivers for my soundcard. I have been onto my motherboard manufacturers website and downloaded the appropriate driver. This worked (or so i thought) the ?Media Controller in device manager disappeared and my soundcard appeared. Media player plays CDs now, as do all my other sound related programs. The problem is i still can't hear any sound!

I have a Dell inspiron 1300 which had started to run slowly and take an age to get past the black windows loading page when i booted up. So i decided to use the built in dell software to wipe it clean and revert back to the factory/straight out the box settings. This all went well but now i have no sound what so-ever in windows. I used the diagnostic program you can find by pressing f12 when booting up and in that i could hear music from the speakers but then when i booted up windows there were no sounds at all?

I have Windows XP.My husband was on the computer and looking at something in google. When he was done and went back to our home page our windows search box was gone from our toolbar and in place of it at the top of the screen is a google search box which we don't like. I am computer illiterate when it comes to knowing what to do to get it back. This is the first time we have ever lost our search box.

I have an Acer Aspire 3000 with a serious problem, it won't load Windows XP and Windows XP is the installed OS.
What happened before the error:
i tried to install Norton Systemworks 2006. Before this, computer was working fine, and yes, I did scan it for viruses. None were found. computer had a partition, but the partition was removed.
Now, I got this computer from a confused cousin, and the history is as follows;
She bought the computer new. However, there was this strange partition in there that seemed to be duplicating everything (or so she told me), so she took it to a friend to have the partitions removed. Okay, the computer worked fine after that. Actually, better than fine, it worked better than it had new. I know, lol, because I tried using it once before and again after.
Now, flash forward a few months and her free trail of McAfee that came with the computer ends and she realizes that she needs some sort of security on it. So she buys Norton as suggested by another friend of hers. Knowing I know something of computers (and she's not all that sure), she gets me to install Norton.
I do.
And upon re-starting, I get after the Acer load screen a black screen with "Load error! Press any key to reboot." I press enter, but nothing happens.
So, in it goes to the friendly computer guy who uses the disks that came with the machine to restore it, and it comes back exactly as it was before I installed Norton, only, minus all her saved stuff. Okay, so obviously if there was a problem it has to be gone now, right?
Well, evidently not as when I install Norton again, guess what happens? Right. It's back to the black screen of death telling me, "Load Error! Press any key to reboot."
Now, it did have Norton Ghost on it, and as per the instructions in the book that comes with Norton, I disabled it before trying to install Systemworks because the first time this happened I didn't. I've tried calling the computer tech that fixed it for me before, but I guess he doesn't want to deal with it anymore because he won't return my phone calls or my emails.
how can she solve the problem?

Something went wrong with my version of XP on one of my hard drives. It boots up asks if I want to start windows normally, then just crashes. Thus, I tried XP on my other hard drive. It boots up then asks me to activate it. I lost my product key, and cannot re-activate it. I cannot load any key-finder programs because I cannot access windows. I am completely clueless as to how to re-activate. I don't believe it's a pirated copy, but it won't let me activate.

I'm about ready to beat my head into a wall.I've got an onboard sound card that has not worked since I formatted my computer (Win XP Pro SP2). The device has the latest drivers from the manufacturer installed, it's enabled in Windows and the BIOS, the Audio Codecs are there, the Windows Sound service is running, thd driver reports no problems at all and yet, No Audio Devices are found when I go into Sounds and Audio Devices in the Control Panel. I've tried installing another sound card in there too, which installs fine, but still isn't selectable as an audio device. What the heck could I be missing here?

I have recently reinstalled windows and since then i havent been able to get any sound except the warning beeps from the computer itself. my speakers dont work. The error message, 'There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices go to Control Panel, click Printer and Other Hardware, and then click Add Hardware' pops up everytime I try to open the Volume Control.I have tried downloading various drivers which many people have suggested bute when I try this message pops up:'Microsoft QFE Update (835221)
This is only to be used on HP Consumer PCs preinstalled with Windows XP. Your PC does not meet this requirement, so update is being aborted. but my PC was preinstalled with Windows i've just had to reinstall it again!

just recently experienced a no audio problem on my computer. Originally had a c-media card installed with everything working ok , then suddenly no sounds at all. Removed card and installed spare Sound Blaster Audigy and downloaded latest drivers. Everything installed ok. No conflicts in Device Manager, proper card identified in control panel/sounds. Windows sound on reboot , but after reboot nothing again. After countless removal of sound card in Device Manager and re-installing drivers , no change. Removed card and re-verted back to on board audio. Realtek high definition audio with latest and original cd AC-97 drivers. Now no audio device available in Control panel/sounds. Within the Realtek HD Audio Control panel I can test speakers and hear sound ok.

I have been noticing that whenever I reboot my computer, or even at random intervals, that the wave portion of the volume menu goes to zero and it makes the sound on my computer go very quiet. I can move the wave dial back to the max and everything works alright, but I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on why this would be happening. I am running the onboard sound which is nvidia based, but not sure if there are any more current drivers than what I am running.
