I have been having some squirely things happening like a blue screen with a code of 0x0000008e and my Picture It! software not working but now when I lost my sound for my email I checked the Sounds and Audio device in the Control Panel and now there is not even a selection for Email Notification. I have never seen this before. This is driving me nuts.

I have been getting some very nice emails on Yahoo mail. They are supposed to have sound. I have sound on everything else on my computer. I have Windows XP Pro installed. I also have Stopzilla, Spyware Blaster, and Spybot. Would the problem have something to do with one of the blockers? And if so, how do I fix it? You can tell everyone that uses the computer does not like popupads. And we surely don't want to be infected with viruses and all that other bad stuff.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a Compaq laptop on XP that is up to date. Norton runs clean. I believe my modem is going bad because whenever I�m on the internet and minimize IE the computer locks up. In about five minutes it starts running and all the things I clicked on while it was locked up appear, as if they were all running in the background. The pc works fine if I�m not using the modem. I�m on vacation and have other modems at home. Several times I held the power button down when it was hung up. One of those times I lost my profile so that when it starts up it can�t find local settings and it has to build a temp profile. I built another profile but all of my old Outlook folders are missing. I�ve done multiple searches for *.pst but can�t find them, even looking in hidden files. I�ve found an old pst file that I made as a backup last year but when I try to load it into my new profile/ user it says I don�t have permission to access these files. The new user I built is set as administrator. I tried moving a copy from the cd to my user but then it asked for a password which I never set. Here are my questions,
1)Is there any way to find the folders in my old Outlook?
2)Is there a way to change the permission on the old pst file on my backup cd? I tried finding it in the registry after I moved it to my user but was unable to?
3)Scanpst.exe needs a pst file to work on which I can�t find.
4)I�ve reloaded the driver for the modem but that didn�t help. Any thoughts?
5)When you archive the mail where is it kept? I did this last week.
i am having.I have just upgraded my pc with more memory a new hard drive and a new mother board.Did not save anything before hand.Because i thought by using the old drive as well as the new drive all info will be there.But windows would not start with the old drive because of the new motherboard.So i had to reload the windows onto the new drive.All is ok most things are there when i get into the old drive ,however i cant find my old e-mqil address or my e-mails i had in inbox.I am running windows xp pro and incredimail. View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter a while my sound will cut out and when I try to play things in Winamp or anything it will stay stuck @ 0:00The sounds will sputter for a second and then freeze. Also when the sound dies, sometimes programs will start to freeze up to the point I can't even kill them in tskmgr. System sounds don't play either.I've tried updating to the latest drivers. I tried an older version of the drivers too.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI went to check my email, and found that IE became unresponsive. Thinking that it was just IE 8 being itself, I proceeded to End Task, and tried to re-open the browser. For some reason, it didn't work. I then decided to re-start the computer to see if that would make a difference. When I did, I found that after logging in, the desktop background would show, but nothing else. I let it sit for more than an hour to see if it would respond, but to no avail.
Then, I decided to start the computer in safe mode. This seemed to work fine, and so I assumed that it was some sort of Trojan that was causing my computer to behave abnormally. So, I went online and installed AVG, as Symantec Antivirus did not work in safe mode. But, since Symantec needed to be uninstalled, the computer shut itself down, and restarted. Only this time, the computer simply did not load past the logo screen. Once that screen closed, I got a black screen, with a flashing cursor on the top left hand corner. It's been sitting there for about an hour, and there has been no change.
I get the Outlook Express has stopped working and needs to shut down" pop up when I click on one specific email. It is from a trusted source so I know it is not virus related. I can not delete the email because as soon as I click on it, it stops working and shuts down.I did the error reporting but don't know what to do now. I need to delete the one email.

Because I teach office applications such as word, excel etc, they think I can fix it for them straight away. I have a little knowledge, they have none so to speak. Someone has pointed me to your site and so I thought I would give you guys a shot. What is happening. - The computer hard drive has got very little on it - but it is running very very slow. I know this is processor memory not storage memory that governs the speed, but I thought you needed to know that bit of info. The email doesn't appear to be working - it says the IMAP setting is wrong but I have checked the email account properties and they all look ok to me. It will log onto the internet - eventually - but is exceptionally slow and will not open any pages - although the browser window opens it keeps saying 'page cannot be displayed'. I have run adaware - but there wasn't much on it - although it did say that it could not delete 'deskadserve'.....
View 14 Replies View RelatedI own at Pentium 4 XP Home Edition PC. Recently, I lost all of my default system sounds--like boot up sound and closing sound. The sound card is okay, because I can play CDs, listen to Real Player and otherwise get sounds.I have gone into the sounds and audio devices properties panel and don't seem to be able to set it to play the sounds. The test button works the sounds fine, but I cannot actually activate them.I have troubleshooted by surfing the web, installing various supposed registry fixes. I have also read the Microsoft data base articles that seem to pertain. SO FAR NOTHING HAS HELPED.Can anyone suggest what I do short of reinstalling Windows? I don't want to take that drastic step!

View 14 Replies View RelatedRecently i had to basically kill my computer to rid it of viruses etc. i had a recovery disk that came with my laptop so i was able to rebuild windows xp as well as an lg disk that restored most of my settings and programs. except now i am without sound which is turning out to be a big pain in the butt. The device manager has only one yellow warning sign over 'Other Devices - PCI Device'. could this be the reason for my missing sound? or is there something else i need to do

Also when I play video files either through Windows Media Player or Real Player, the video stalls to a still frame for a couple of seconds and then moves on and then stalls again. It doesn't correspond with the time line. Can someone please provide me with a method to fix these two issues?

I could live without sound or could reinstall my sound card but the VPN connection to the office is critical to my daily work.
I come home to visit my family for Christmas last night and use my old desktop. its working fine besides its a little slow. i figure its from my little sister downloading stuff. easily fixed problem. so i try to fix the problem by deleting things that were useless to her and i and were making the computer slow. i restart the computer and my windows xp theme has disappeared, there are no more network places or networks, for that matter, and i have no sound card now.

I started another thread a couple of days ago but have progressed a bit since then so thought i would start a fresh one.I have recently formatted my hard drive and lost drivers for my soundcard. I have been onto my motherboard manufacturers website and downloaded the appropriate driver. This worked (or so i thought) the ?Media Controller in device manager disappeared and my soundcard appeared. Media player plays CDs now, as do all my other sound related programs. The problem is i still can't hear any sound!
View 6 Replies View Relatedthis one's got me stumped. all of a sudden most, but not all, of my winxp sound functionality has stopped working.mp3s, wavs and saved videos play fine with winamp or media player sound is good.but sound from sites like Internet and google video doesn't play. the system sounds don't play. the volume icon in the tray is gone.i've reinstalled my sound drivers (ac97), ensured that 'display volume icon in tray' is checked, volume levels are good, speakers are plugged in (obviously since i can play mp3s). the device manager shows everything to be working ok, no conflicts.

my keyboard got messed up and stopped working. When I was messing around with the back of the tower to try to fix it, I somehow killed my sound off too. Eventually, I got a new keyboard, but after adjusting with the stuff on the back of the computer tower the sound still didn't work.
Since my sister's computer specs and mine are the same, I checked out the device manager on both of the PCs to see what was missing from mine. I found out that it was a "Realtek AC'97 Audio" listing. So of course, I google it up and download what I find. However, after installing it, it still doesn't work. It doesn't even show in the device manager! And to make matters more confusing, when I start up my computer, it says that I can press Shift+F10 to configure it. When I do that, a DOS-like menu pops up where I can change a few options but nothing I change will get the sound working.
When I go to Accessories --> Entertainment --> Volume Control, it says that there are no active mixer devices available.
I don't think it's related to viruses or spyware. I've scanned multiple times with TuneUp, Spybot, Ad-aware, Norton, and a few other programs.HiJackThis information:

The sound on my PC stopped working about a week ago. Hadn't installed anything in at least the few weeks before it stopped.
I decided to re format the PC a few days later thinking that it would be fine, which initially it was, am running XP professional. Windows did all its updates as per normal and the sound stopped again.
Reinstalled the PC yet again to try and get to the bottom of things and this time went through things a bit more slowly. Did it's first lot of updates, was fine after those. That was yesterday that they updated. Tonight installed Service Pack 2 and thats when it has stopped.
In the Sound and Audio Devices section of the Control Panel it is saying there is no audio device installed, yet I had installed it via the CD that came with the motherboard. Soundmax sound on an ASUS k8v SE deluxe motherbord. why something like this may have happened?
I recently lost audio playback on my pc. It runs Windows XP and uses Creative SB Audigy Sound Device. It worked just fine until recently. I booted the pc up for the day and discovered no sound. Under "Device Manager" the device is listed as working properly with up-to-date driver. It is the only audio device that can be "un-installed" or "enabled/disabled" other than some "UniModem half duplex audio device" that is disabled. Under "sounds and audio device properties", "Audio Tab" the default playback device is listed as "modem line #3 playback". I tried to change the audio playback to the "Creative SB Audigy", but their is no other option than the "Modem #3 Line Playback". In the same, "Sounds and Audio Device Properties", under the "Volume" tab, it says "No Audio Device".

View 2 Replies View Relatedi have been having trouble with my sound for a few weeks now and have been unable to find out how to solve my problem. whenever i get onto the internet the sound does not work. not on any sites, everytime i go onto Internet i can see the video perfectly, but am unable to hear the sound. however when i open up ituens and listen to music the sound works perfectly fine! it also works fine when i put in a cd or dvd or have any games running! does anyone know whats wrong?
View 2 Replies View Relatedso after finally getting a massive virus off of my sister's computer i've had to re-install everything, msn, anti-virus stuff etc. but now i have two problems that i can't seem to find the answer for anywhere! first, windows (xp home edition) keeps asking me to activate it everytime i log on, i click on the bubble and follow the steps, i go onto "activate through the internet" and then "no don't register just get activated", i put in the product key that's on the side of her desktop and it says it's invalid, so i tried a keyfinder and it came up with a different one, so i entered that in instead and that didn't work either. it may be relevant to mention that the operating system cd might be from my parent's laptop or my sister's computer, i could only find one so i used that. any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
secondly the sound card driver isnt working i don't think. the log on music works but there's no icon on the bottom of the screen with the picture of a speaker. i go on the internet and click a random Internet video and that doesn't have any sound. there's nothing wrong with the speakers (because i unplugged them and put them into my laptop and they work fine).
i just reinstalled windows xp. i cannot hear any sounds now. my computer doesnt dectect my speakers. it doesnt show any audio device. it was working fine before i reinstalled.
