my laptop will not boot without being plugged into the wall
here is what happens.
Booting from battery: loads fine up to windows xp loading screen then freezes..
booting plugged into wall: Goes absolutely fine
also the laptop will run off the battery AFTER being booted up with the wall socket.
I have a new samsun 120 GB hard drive that I have placed into two seperate external enclosures connected to my dell pentium 4 win XP computer via USB. My computer will not recognize the hard drive. It
powers up fine? Any ideas of what to do next?
I added a 120 gig Western Digital USB external drive and used Acronis to create a backup of my hard drive. I then used Windows XP to remove it as a USB device so I could power it off. Now, when I power it back on it is not recognized by XP and does not appear on My Computer or on Disk Management (where I originally formatted it for NTFS). All I get is a sound like a single "KERPLONK" when I power it on.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI need some help. My manager's HD in her Dell Latitude laptop (which lacks a cdrom) has caught a boot sector virus. The only solution was to take its HD out and put it into an external shell that connects to my computer via USB.I was able to install the first half of the Windows XP step, but when that was done and my computer restarted it did not complete the rest of the setup for the usb HD. Basically I am wanting to install windows using the Latitude's code then putting the HD back in hoping it we be as if it's a new install. Not sure if I have cleared up the entire situation, but hope soIf you follow and know what I am look for please help. If you would like to help and need more explaining I have all the time in the world. I appreciate any response, have a good one!

View 8 Replies View Relatedwhen I press the power button (and I've tried turning it on off of the battery, battery and outlet power, and just the outlet power), the light turns on, I can hear the regular whirring, but then the power button starts to flash, as if it's in standby mode? I've tried pushing a few buttons on the keyboard, tried pushing the escape button, tried pressing even the wireless LAN button that's at the top... nothing. When I press the power button, nothing happens unless I hold it down for five seconds, then it just turns itself off again.

While installing, or often before, the power randomly cuts off with no warning at random places. Last time I did this I just had to keep trying all night until one time it worked long enough to install.

The power lights flash, it checks the CD-RW drive, and then remains on with the main power light on and the fan on, but the screen remains black and nothing else happens. Windows XP doesn't load. No Sony logo, no "Operating system not found," nothing. It's like it's had a lobotomy.I haven't installed anything new, and the notebook has just been sitting around unplugged for a few days. The last thing I used it for was to burn a CD with Windows Media Player. The only change I can think of is that my USB tablet isn't plugged in.

For some reason the two USB ports have stopped working and no USB devices are recognised. I have looked at the device manager under USB controllers and there are four USB controllers listed which are as follows: Intel 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 enhanced host controller 24CDIntel 82801DB/DBM USB universal host controller 24C2Intel 82801DB/DBM USB universal host controller 24C4Intel 82801DB/DBM USB universal host controller 24C7 Underneath those are four USB root hubs.
I have previously used a USB card reader and external hard drive on both ports without any problems but now when I connect any device nothing at all happens.
Ever since a power failure yesterday, my computer is not booting 100% of the way - it seems to stall at the end after loading desktop etc, can't see anything missing but I am unable to do anything. Nothing opens when clicked on. It works perfectly in Safe Mode with Networking.
I checked Device Manager and found 3 things highlighted:
HID Non-user input Data Filter
HID Non-user input Data Filter in HID section, and
WAN Miniport (IP) in Network Adaptors.
I do not have a wireless network, only a hard-wired one, so not sure what that is about.
I just recently had to do a system rescue on my hp machine. One issue i have run into is the computer will not boot up if the external HD is connected. This was not an issue prior. The drive is a fantom external drive and is connected by usb.

I was on the computer this morning (plugged into a power bar) when all of a sudden the power went out in my neighbourhood. I was just on the desktop at the time I believe. I unplugged everything to prevent anything from surging to be safe, and I went out for the day.When I got home, the power was back on, and so I plugged the computer back in. However, as I plugged in the computer, it turned on by itself. Normally it does not do this when I plug it in after it was forced to shut down for a blackout. I immediately knew something was up.When it started to turn on, it immediately went to a blue screen of death.
It won't get past this screen. I've tried Safe Mode, Last Known Good Configuration, Normal Mode and it just keeps going back to this screen. I also noticed it doesn't make the normal noises when it's booting up. It doesn't make that 'click click' sound when I'm booting up (I believe that's a hard drive sound?). I do have access to the Windows Recovery Console (I think - it appears as an option - I don't know if it will work) but I don't know what to do. It sounds like it did something to the hard drive... when I boot up the computer normally it asks me to press F1 (because my CMOS battery is low)... now on that screen it says Serial ATA at the top. I don't know why that is, or if this has anything to do with the low CMOS battery before, but I can't get it to turn on at all at the moment. I don't understand why the power failure would do this (or what it did)... I've never not been able to boot up after a power failure. And surely there wasn't a surge since it wasn't plugged in when the power came back on.Did it kill the HD? Anything I can do to at least recover some files?
I have an old MS-6318 MB with Pentium III 866MHz, Intel Pro/100 S NIC and Windows XP.Whenever I try to use Wake On LAN to turn on the PC everything is fine until it gets to the Windows XP logo screen, the marquee progress bar gets halfway, stops and XP stops loading. However, the the system is not frozen, only the XP loading Turning on the PC with the power button has no issues whatsoever,
an ASUS CUSI-M with the same type of NIC has no issues turning on and loading XP with WOL.
My computer was on and we had some bad thunder storms and lost power briefly. I now have a blue screen saying I have an "Unmountable Boot Error" and that I should reboot the computer in Safe Mode. When I try this I can get to a menu where I select Safe Mode but after that it takes me right back to the blue sreen with the "Unmountable Boot Error" message.I know I could probably use the restore CD but I'd rather not lose all the
data on my computer.
Can I copy my C drive to an external usb drive and then later boot from the usb drive if my C drive fails without having to go through the complete installation of the WinXP-pro on the usb drive? If so, what program(s) can I use to do the copy?

Then I get the message about Windows failing to load because of possible power surge or hardware problems or something, and a choice between loading Windows normally, loading the last known working setup, or the three variations on loading safe mode.
I had a power outage last night and when I turned the computer back on this morning, it says that error. "Disk Boot Failure - Insert system disk and press enter" I do not have a working CD drive in the computer so I hope that doesn't have anything to do with it.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with a Compaq Presario running XP Home. I took the CD player out and cleaned out broken pieces of a CD that was destroyed in it. I got it cleaned out, put back together and now the pc won't boot up. I don't know what went wrong. Cleaning the CD player was quite easy and went back together okay. I hooked all of the wires up the way they were. On the front of this computer, there are two lights. One on the left which is green, and one on the right which is orange. Normally, when the power button is pushed, the green light comes on first, then the orange light comes on during the loading process. You can see the boot process on the monitor.
Now, after hooking it back up today, when the power button is pushed, the green light comes on, then the orange one comes on and goes back off after a moment. The green light stays on. Nothing at all shows up on the monitor, not even a blinking cursor -- it just stays blank. It stays that way indefinitely nothing. The monitor light is on so it is apparently getting power, but shows nothing. I'm sure the monitor is hooked up correctly; it can only be plugged in one way. While I had everything unhooked and was cleaning the CD player, I plugged the CD player back in for a moment and plugged in the power cord to the pc and pushed the power button. The power came on and allowed me to eject the empty tray. I did this to get the tray out of the way so I could clean beneath it. I tried to turn the power back off with the pc power button after ejecting the tray and it wouldn't seem to shut down.
I have problem with booting to c drive. Here i am giving what exactly happened.I have c drive with os installed, d drive for recovery partition, G drive (logical) for datas.I had some virus problem in c drive. So i used Powerquest "PQ boot for windows to reboot to d drive (recovery pertition). The laptop booted to d drive, then i run then Destructive recovery (format and reinstall the os to factory settitngs). After that i restarted the laptop. But it is again booting to d drive. I dont know how to made to boot to c drive.

Neither the on-line manual or website gives information whether a restore is possible from a catastrophic-type incident of the O/S, requiring restoration from a bootup procedure. There's no instruction about preparing a "Recovery CD." I have Ghost 9.0; would this be more advisable to backup the image file; and would Ghost see the external HD from its Recovery CD?
I have a HP ze5568cl laptop (Windows XP SP2). For a few years we've had trouble with the power connector. We've just wiggled the power cable to keep it connected and lived with the problem. It also gets very hot and the fan runs constantly. Yesterday when I powered it on there was no power, absolutely nothing. My husband has some electronic knowledge so we took the laptop apart and he soldered the loose part of the power connector. While he was doing that I cleaned the fan (couldn't believe how much dust was in there.When we plugged in the power cable the orange light came on so we were excited. When we powered it on all the keyboard lights lit up so we thought we had fixed the problem but.that's all it did. It went no further except that the fan kicked on.There is a clicking noise coming from the cd drive about every second with the green light flashing. I suppose it is checking to see if there is a bootable cd in the cd drive. I have attempted to change the boot order by holding F1, then F2 but it still continues to try to read the cd drive. I can't get to the screen that will allow me to change the boot order.
I also put the OS disk in the cd drive, hoping that it would start with the disk but it just clicks. Hubby removed the cover of the cd drive and I could see that the cd is spinning.There were no problems with this laptop prior to the power problem. It was really working very well especially considering the age of it.
The information in my sig is not for the computer with the problem. It's actually for an old computer which my son now has at college.
Well like alot of people I made the mistake of selecting safeboot in the boot.ini file in the msconfig file after my comp got a virus and would not boot into safemode. The hard drive is in two partitions: the C drive used to contain windows, and the D drive which has the data i am trying to save. I don't have a Windows XP disc because it was already on the comp when i bought it. I have attempted to restore the windows files with Bart PE bootup image disc but it wiped out Windows XP completely from the C drive in the process, but the Data drive is still showing up with all its files intact.

Well i was just on my computer using p2p file sharing program. and then my computer froze. first the program itself and then the whole computer just froze. So i held down the power button until it turned off and then i turned it back on and then i received this error. Disk boot failure. insert system disk and press enter.
I have my stuff backed up, i used it as a secondary and i backed up the things i needed, so i dont really care that much if i need to format. The funny thing though is that it actually froze once on my brothers computer when i was transferring files and when i restarted it wouldnt boot up and when i took out my hard drive my brothers computer booted up perfectly and after it booted up perfectly i shutted it back down and then i attached my hard drive as a slave again and then it booted up.
The problem that I am having is with my HP Pavilion XT983 Desktop Computer. It will not boot up when I power it on. The power light is on and the monitor is in sleep mode. The only thing that is operating is the fan. I have tried rebooting with the boot up diskette but it is not reading my A: drive. It also will not read CDs.
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy sis has one of those Wally-Mart Acer mini laptops; NO CD-ROM drive in it (PS: way-bad idea! Never buy a computer w/o a dvd/cd drive in it!). She managed to delete the graphics card driver and so when that occurred and rebooted, nothing on-screen! Its there, you just cannot see anything in windows! And, because there is no drive, the CD with all the original programs cannot be run in start-up mode without an external CD-ROM drive
I want to use my (HP Pavilion zv6000 w/XP) laptop as that external drive to re-load her original CD, which (of course) has all the drives on it! At start-up, the Acer (also w/XP) has an option to start-up from an ext. drive, so it has that capability (obviously, w/o a drive of its own), but how to make my HP "look" like an external drive (via USB-to-USB hookup) is the problem!
An external hard drive. When it is on & I try to boot,I get the following error : Invalid system disk Replace the disk, and then press any key I then have to turn off the external & press any key to get it to boot. Is there a way that I can boot with that external turned on. Some setting I need to change perhaps? I have an E-Machines computer about 2 years old.
