Computer Wont Boot Up - Power Light Is On But Monitor In Sleep Mode
Aug 4, 2005
The problem that I am having is with my HP Pavilion XT983 Desktop Computer. It will not boot up when I power it on. The power light is on and the monitor is in sleep mode. The only thing that is operating is the fan. I have tried rebooting with the boot up diskette but it is not reading my A: drive. It also will not read CDs.

I can't figure out why my computer is going into sleep mode. I have the power settings to "always on" -- but maybe 15 minutes or so after the screensaver comes up, the computer goes into sleep mode. I guess it's sleep mode, the monitor goes dark and all I have to do is slightly move the mouse and the computer "wakes up". Also, there are a few things on my HJT log that I'm wondering what they are, how they got there, and can I get rid of them. The issues I'm talking about will be bolded in red

I have an HP desktop. I accidentally hit the standby button on the keyboard. It started to put my computer into standby but seems to have completely powered it down. I couldn't turn it back on at all. I've tried hitting the power button and unplugging the computer. Nothing works. There is a green light near the power cord in the back blinking and that's it. I've tried unplugging all peripherals before plugging the power back in. I've also tried unplugging it and pressing the power button a few times before plugging it back in. I just can't get it to turn back on.

my computer suddenly displays a message."entering sleep mode" and restarts. I have my settings in power management in control panel set at never for turn of hard drive etc, etc...so in theory, my pc should never shut down on its own??....also, both IE and firefox from time to time get a message "...has encountered a problem and needs to shut down.." when this happens I send the report to whereever. and restart my browser...I've tried running in safe mode and still get the same problems....more ofter w/IE than firefox

I have a HP Pavilion (new 1/06) with Windows XP, Avast 4.7 Anti-Virus(free version) and Zone Alarm(ZA) Anti Spyware(I purchased ZA for one year). When reactivating computer from sleep mode, it will not reconnect to the internet or my e-mail program without restarting the computer. As soon as I try to reconnect, the ZoneAlarm Icon becomes active and for some reason does not allow a connection to be completed

The hard drive on my PC is apparently dying. I need to replace it... no big deal, I can handle that. But I want to get my information off the drive because I stupidly haven't backed it up recently. I can get the drive to start (with protests and a very slow reaction time), but though I can hear it spinning and feel the vibrations, it won't trigger the monitor. I don't get a "no signal" message, all I get is the power light blinking at me

The problem is that whenever I "switch user" (win + L) out of my account for someone else to log on their account, when they try logging off, my monitor acts like if I was putting the computer into sleep mode. That is, it goes black and some messages come up on the screen saying the usual "check power etc" messages and the light flashes. The computer continues to run and there is no way of restoring my screen so I am forced to press the main power button on the computer tower.

I have a home built machine running XP Pro. It is a clean installation since had some recent other problems with it and completely formatted hard drive and reinstalled XP. I have added all the Window updates including sp3. I have a GE Force 6200 video card and have installed all the drivers but the machine will not enter sleep mode either manually or automatically (I mention this because I have read elsewhere this was a problem for Vista but haven't seen anything anywhere for XP). I even set the bios to force sleep mode and nothing happened.

I was on the computer this morning (plugged into a power bar) when all of a sudden the power went out in my neighbourhood. I was just on the desktop at the time I believe. I unplugged everything to prevent anything from surging to be safe, and I went out for the day. When I got home, the power was back on, and so I plugged the computer back in. However, as I plugged in the computer, it turned on by itself. Normally it does not do this when I plug it in after it was forced to shut down for a blackout. I immediately knew something was up.When it started to turn on, it immediately went to a blue screen of death.
It won't get past this screen. I've tried Safe Mode, Last Known Good Configuration, Normal Mode and it just keeps going back to this screen. I also noticed it doesn't make the normal noises when it's booting up. It doesn't make that 'click click' sound when I'm booting up (I believe that's a hard drive sound?). I do have access to the Windows Recovery Console (I think - it appears as an option - I don't know if it will work) but I don't know what to do. It sounds like it did something to the hard drive... when I boot up the computer normally it asks me to press F1 (because my CMOS battery is low)... now on that screen it says Serial ATA at the top. I don't know why that is, or if this has anything to do with the low CMOS battery before, but I can't get it to turn on at all at the moment. I don't understand why the power failure would do this (or what it did)... I've never not been able to boot up after a power failure. And surely there wasn't a surge since it wasn't plugged in when the power came back on.Did it kill the HD? Anything I can do to at least recover some files?

I am trying to go from a single monitor to a dual monitor. My present graphic card is integrated on to my motherboard. I have another old graphic card a PCI S3 Virge. The problem with this graphic card is that its driver is not supported by Windows XP.If I disable my graphic card on my motherboard.I can manage to get
this PCI graphic card to work.If I hook up both the graphic cards i.e. both of them are enabled, the computer does not manage to boot (except in safe mode.) It should also be mentioned that when my PCI card is plugged in the computer at time of booting uses it and not the monitor plugged into the graphic card attached to the motherboard. Is there a way to change this.I tried messing with i.e. all possible combinations of values in the BIOS, but nothing seems to work. I would be grateful if someone had some idea on what to try.

I searched around the forums and didnt find any thread relating to my problem. I searched around the internet as well and found similiar issues but none with a solid solution. I was hoping to find one here. My problem deals with the Power Scheme in Windows XP Pro SP2. When I try to set the amount of time before my monitor turns off, it doesnt work properly. After the specified time has elapsed, the monitor would go dark and it would say "Monitor is going into sleep mode" which is normal for my monitor (HP f2105 wide flat screen lcd). But then just as it sleeps, about 1 second later, my windows desktop appears like it never went to sleep at all. When I move my mouse I notice my desktop flickers for a split second.Similiar threads on the net suggested there were some third party programs that is keeping my system active or things like my mouse sensitivity moving etc. I tried removing all my perperphials but it still doesnt seem to work.
I recently reformatted my machine and installed the essentional programs/windows updates/etc. I run on a ATI X1950 PRO 512MB video card and installed the new Catalyst 7.12 software package for my drivers. Everything was working perfectly. The Monitor turn off option even worked then.... until I noticed this new driver package seems to be a bit buggy. My monitor would turn black as I would be viewing videos off the internet with my WMP or whatever Im using and all I am left to do is reset by pressing my power button or switching the PSU button (Although strangely, 3D applications ran flawlessly). So I got an earlier version Catalyst 7.10 and installed that and everything is working awesome again... execpt the Power Scheme mode to turn off my monitor. I am unclear on why it would be doing this by just installing another set of drivers for my video card. I am assuming there is some mix up in some file somewhere thats still being used, but thats just pure guessing now.
I recall even before I reformatted I had the *SAME* issue. I was using video drivers 7.8 or so without any problems and decided to update to the latest 7.12 and thats when I *FIRST* noticed that power scheme monitor turn off didnt work any longer. So I decided it was time to do a fresh clean install and I used the Catalyst 7.12 and it worked with the power scheme option. Its this transition between drivers or something... or perhaps ATIs drivers are faultly at the moment and it'll fix itself with future updates... but then again other people around the net with similiar problems didnt have ATI video cards, they had Nvidia.I am assuming it has to do with my video drivers somehow since thats the last thing I installed/changed before the problem appeared. I went into MSCONFIG and diagnostic startup and checked to see if my power scheme monitor turn off worked there and it did..I was hoping to find an easier solution rather then narrowing down each and every startup application/services in MSCONFIG and then figuring out why its doing this all just to turn off my monitor.

well i have read a lot about this problem but im dont think i really found a solution so i thought i would make a new thread. Well i was just on my computer using p2p file sharing program. and then my computer froze. first the program itself and then the whole computer just froze. So i held down the power button until it turned off and then i turned it back on and then i received this error. Disk boot failure. insert system disk and press enter.
I have my stuff backed up, i used it as a secondary and i backed up the things i needed, so i dont really care that much if i need to format. The funny thing though is that it actually froze once on my brothers computer when i was transferring files and when i restarted it wouldnt boot up and when i took out my hard drive my brothers computer booted up perfectly and after it booted up perfectly i shutted it back down and then i attached my hard drive as a slave again and then it booted up.

System has always run well, until I noticed the CPU cooler fan had started to rattle. So I cleaned the heat sink fins, replaced the cooler fan, and fired her up. BUT after awhile, (usually 15-30 minutes), and after the screen saver has kicked in (5 min) the screen goes black, and the system will not respond. If I hit a key the HD light comes on, but that is about it. When I shut the system down, and try to reboot, I get absolutely nothing, no POST, nada. IF I let the system sit overnight, it will reboot the next morning. Checked in the BIOS hardware monitoring section, and CPU temp and speed never rise about 60 C, (shutdown is 110C). Checked Windows, and power scheme is set for nothing to shut down, ever (monitor, HD, etc), and its not set to hibernate. Problem did not occur until I opened the case and replace the CPU cooler fan.

I have realtek audio 97 build in sound on a win media center XP machine. Sound is fine on boot-up, but after energy-saving sleep modes I may or may not lose it. Device manager says all working fine. Soundman.exe checked in start menu, but no icon in tray. Oddly, on shutdown the sound will return and play the log-off sound. Any ideas?
