Computer Wont Turn On After Standby - Power Light Blinking
May 9, 2010
I have an HP desktop. I accidentally hit the standby button on the keyboard. It started to put my computer into standby but seems to have completely powered it down. I couldn't turn it back on at all. I've tried hitting the power button and unplugging the computer. Nothing works. There is a green light near the power cord in the back blinking and that's it. I've tried unplugging all peripherals before plugging the power back in. I've also tried unplugging it and pressing the power button a few times before plugging it back in. I just can't get it to turn back on.

The problem that I am having is with my HP Pavilion XT983 Desktop Computer. It will not boot up when I power it on. The power light is on and the monitor is in sleep mode. The only thing that is operating is the fan. I have tried rebooting with the boot up diskette but it is not reading my A: drive. It also will not read CDs.

Yesterday, I was half way through burning an ISO file to disc using [program name deleted my mod.] (have used this many times previously without a problem), when the computer froze. Nothing worked (mouse, keyboard) and the only thing I could do was turn it off at the power button. I left it for 10 minutes, started the computer up again and the (black) screen came up giving 'you need to reboot' and 'insert a bootable disc' messages. I inserted my Windows XP disc as it's the only one I have and don't have a bootable disc, and after while I was given 3 options - one was to repair, one was to escape and I can't remember what the 3rd one was. Anyway I pressed repair and after a minute or two it said it couldn't find the hard drive (or disc) so it was unable to repair and the only thing I could do was quit. After leaving the computer off for a period of time, I switched it back on and it came up with the disc scan screen details and went through the process quickly and it said one of the sectors had been repaired and it was 'back to normal' after that.
The computer is 4 years old (Intel Pentium 4/3.2gHz/1GB RAM/Hard Drive 149GB) and I've had intermittent problems with the CPU overheating due to dust etc which I've cleaned out from time to time (as you do) and all has been well. So, in total this has happened 3 times in 24 hours but on the other two occasions when it froze, after turning it off and leaving it for a couple of minutes, it came back again as normal. The computer seems OK when it's not under load (using the internet/emails/typing documents/photo editing) but the first time you ask it a big question (e.g. copy or convert a disc) it will freeze. Is this a CPU, hard drive or motherboard problem or any other ideas please.

The hard drive on my PC is apparently dying. I need to replace it... no big deal, I can handle that. But I want to get my information off the drive because I stupidly haven't backed it up recently. I can get the drive to start (with protests and a very slow reaction time), but though I can hear it spinning and feel the vibrations, it won't trigger the monitor. I don't get a "no signal" message, all I get is the power light blinking at me

After working for sometime with Maxtor One Touch II external drive, I have experienced the following problem: If the computer is left for some period of inactivity, for 1-2 or more hours (the light on the drive is on and not blinking) I cannot access the drive and the OS message is "One touch is not responding". The only remedy is to restart the computer. My System consists of: WindowsXP SP2 and 512 MB Ram The Maxtor OneTouch II drive is connected via a firewire inlet of the computer, the file system being NTFS. The drive is partitioned unto 2 logical drives (~150 GB each)

I built a decent computer system for myself a little a year ago. a few weeks ago, I wanted to have to use two monitors with ATI Radeon 9250, so I bought a DVI/VGA adapter. But I couldn't get both monitors working at at the same time. Since I have a brand new ASUS EAX1300HM512 video card, I figured I'd install and that would do the trick. Well that did not work. Then I tried adding both cards on the MOBO, I could not get both monitors working (I'm sure it was user error). Then I removed the EAX1300One, reboot...from that point on the computer kept rebooting after I logon to Windows. I was able to access the computer through safe mode. After several weeks of using my backup pc, I thought I would try to resolve this problem. I removed the MOBO's battery then put it back. Now the computer powers on and posts, I am able to see the bios but after that i just get a black screen with a blinking cursor.

I just installed XP Pro SP2 onto this toshiba laptop (fairly good;1.4ghz intel celeron M,512 ddr ram, wireless nic,ati graphics and such) and it seems that standby and hibernate wont work AT ALL. Standby is grayed out in the turn off computer menu and the hibernate tab does not exist in the power options utility in control panel. I've googled around a bit and found no specific option in the BIOS to enable or disable it and as far as i know this laptop SHOULD support it...i mean come on what kind of laptop doesn't standby or hibernate?

when I press the power button (and I've tried turning it on off of the battery, battery and outlet power, and just the outlet power), the light turns on, I can hear the regular whirring, but then the power button starts to flash, as if it's in standby mode? I've tried pushing a few buttons on the keyboard, tried pushing the escape button, tried pressing even the wireless LAN button that's at the top... nothing. When I press the power button, nothing happens unless I hold it down for five seconds, then it just turns itself off again.

I downloaded some windows updates but not all of them installed. When I go to Turn Off Computer, the "Turn Off" button has changed, indicating that when I hit it, it will install the updates. There's also a field I can click which will Turn Off without installing the updates. When I click the Turn Off buttion, it attempts to install two updates. It doesn't appear to be successful. Every time I Turn Off Computer it apparently tries to install the same two updates. I can reboot and do this over and over and they don't "take".There's nothing in Event Viewer to indicate what's going on. I couldn't find any installation logs though I'm not sure where to look.

My computer is stuck or frozen. The activity light stays on. I have removed all fans and cleaned them, remove battery and replaced after 30 minutes, used a different battery, unplugged all cables. After trying each one, I plugged the computer in again and still activity light stays on. The moniter is black. When I turn it off and on it shows "no signal" on the screen. I also replaced the ram with two 2Gs. What do I do to stop whatever activity is going on?

For over a month now, my Window Update program has been firing off multiple times per day telling me there are updates to install. These updates are always SilverLight and Redemption. I run the install, it says everything was installed, but an hour of so later, it tells me there is another install, that just so happens to be the same two files. Here is another clue: If the install runs while I am shutting the computer down, it never ends installing; I have to manually reboot.

I was working on my friend's computer and I had to switch the hard drive over to his new computer to try and get it to work on the new computer. It didn't work, so I tried to put the harddrive back in its original computer and now I have a problem. When I try to start up the computer, everything runs fine through the POST and then, before it goes to the Windows screen with the little bar that goes sideways, it stops on a black screen with the blinking underscore (_). I've restarted it many many times and it all ends up the same, stopping at the flashing underscore. I've tried to boot to a Win 98 boot floppy to get it to the command prompt but I get an error saying that it is the incorrect disk. I've also tried to reset the bios by taking the battery out for a while. It reset the bios good and all but I still got the same problem. I think it has to do with the MBR cause I know the harddrive works (as a slave in another computer) and I know the RAM is new. I don't think those are the problems because before I put the harddrive in the new computer to try and boot off it, it worked fine. I can't get into the start up menu either by pressing F8. The only thing I can think of that might work that I haven't tried is to boot off the XP cd and do the recovery console thing. Unless I know that it will abosolutely fix it, I'd like to stray away from it. If you think otherwise, I'll gladly try it. I think I had a problem like this before and I got past it somehow, but I don't remember how I did it.

When I turn my computer on it goes to the blue hp logo and then to a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner. If I hit f8 when booting it gives me 2 options...f1 to setup and f2 to resume. It won't let me go into safe mode or anything. I have tried booting from the xp cd, but nothing happens. I have tried replacing the battery and that hasn't done anything. It started when trying to open a program, the computer just went blank. When trying to reboot, this mess started. Also, I just got this error message, which is new.i got it after I unplugged the computer for awhile.. warning 251: system cmos checksum bad dafalut config used

I have checked and played with the bios setting and it does not help.

After a huge upgrade and fresh XP installation (up to SP2), my computer won't standby hibernate. The only parts that remained were the HDs, RAID card, and power supply. MOBO was upgraded to X38, GPU to GF8800GT, and CPU is now Dual Core. Prior to the upgrade, my PC could go into standby. Now it is "grayed out."I went to power management, hibernation tab is not there. I tried reinstalling MOBO drivers, same thing. My comp used to be able to do this in XP. Well, I read about it, and supposedly, dual core cannot go into standby (or at least winxp doesn't want to allow the user to do this with DualC). Is that true? Edit: I even tried the hotfix and disabling terminal services. No effect.I tried apmstat -v, and it said that this is an ACPI machine and that APM is not relevant.

I have been having problems lately with my computer - every time i switch it on, it goes to standby. Worse still, it keeps going on standby even when it's on standby. Makes sense? It's like it's posessed!I've googled this problem, and it appears that it's a hardware problem, BUT, when i log in on safe mode, the problem disappears. So, being an average computer user, i'm pretty puzzled in the least. I have no idea what the problem was - I didn't install anything lately, or visit any webpages outside my usual ones. I haven't found a virus that acts this way, so I've ruled it out for now.

I cannot put my computer into standby, as it simply starts again automatically after 20-30 seconds. It goes into standby allright, but resumes very quickly hereafter.I am aware of an article on Microsofts website recommending to change settings in the network adapter to avoid waking on magic packets. This I have done to no avail.
