I was unable to turn my Toshiba laptop on this morning. It was working fine last night when I logged off. The power and battery lights are on and I've checked all connections but still no luck.
View 8 RepliesI was using my Compaq laptop last night (unfortunately I'm at work and do not have any further identifying info on it...other than it's probably at least 3, closer to 4, years old) and it was fine. I walked away from it for less than 5 mins, when I came back, it was off - no lights, no display, no noise, no nothing. and it would not turn back on. I turned it on again this morning, which it did fine, but after less than 2 minutes (if even that long), it said it was 'preparing to stand by', but never actually reached that stage, instead it just shut off again. Throughout this time it was plugged in. I left it plugged in, but then removed the battery (thinking it might be dead), but still, nothing. Now it won't even turn on - battery or not, plugged in or not.

View 11 Replies View Relatedwhen I press the power button (and I've tried turning it on off of the battery, battery and outlet power, and just the outlet power), the light turns on, I can hear the regular whirring, but then the power button starts to flash, as if it's in standby mode? I've tried pushing a few buttons on the keyboard, tried pushing the escape button, tried pressing even the wireless LAN button that's at the top... nothing. When I press the power button, nothing happens unless I hold it down for five seconds, then it just turns itself off again.

Normally at start fan is very loud for about 3 seconds then It seems to switch something and goes quieter and eveything comes on. Now when fanstats you can here a small ticking sound ..like something trying to do something..if you know what I mean.It will not turn monitor on either.
Is it possible that the cmos battery has died ?

View 8 Replies View RelatedYesterday, I was half way through burning an ISO file to disc using [program name deleted my mod.] (have used this many times previously without a problem), when the computer froze. Nothing worked (mouse, keyboard) and the only thing I could do was turn it off at the power button. I left it for 10 minutes, started the computer up again and the (black) screen came up giving 'you need to reboot' and 'insert a bootable disc' messages. I inserted my Windows XP disc as it's the only one I have and don't have a bootable disc, and after while I was given 3 options - one was to repair, one was to escape and I can't remember what the 3rd one was. Anyway I pressed repair and after a minute or two it said it couldn't find the hard drive (or disc) so it was unable to repair and the only thing I could do was quit. After leaving the computer off for a period of time, I switched it back on and it came up with the disc scan screen details and went through the process quickly and it said one of the sectors had been repaired and it was 'back to normal' after that.
The computer is 4 years old (Intel Pentium 4/3.2gHz/1GB RAM/Hard Drive 149GB) and I've had intermittent problems with the CPU overheating due to dust etc which I've cleaned out from time to time (as you do) and all has been well.So, in total this has happened 3 times in 24 hours but on the other two occasions when it froze, after turning it off and leaving it for a couple of minutes, it came back again as normal. The computer seems OK when it's not under load (using the internet/emails/typing documents/photo editing) but the first time you ask it a big question (e.g. copy or convert a disc) it will freeze. Is this a CPU, hard drive or motherboard problem or any other ideas please.
I have an HP desktop. I accidentally hit the standby button on the keyboard. It started to put my computer into standby but seems to have completely powered it down. I couldn't turn it back on at all. I've tried hitting the power button and unplugging the computer. Nothing works. There is a green light near the power cord in the back blinking and that's it. I've tried unplugging all peripherals before plugging the power back in. I've also tried unplugging it and pressing the power button a few times before plugging it back in. I just can't get it to turn back on.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a older Imb laptop modle T23 computer and when I shut it down rather then using standby it takes several times trying to get it to come back on. I press the little round on/off button and the (z) button lights up and I hear the fan turn on and all of a sudden a series of beeps, and the screen won't turn on. The beeping is like 8 beeps, then stops but still nothing come up on the screen. Completely black! So i turn off the computer again, and turn on same thing. I continue doing this like 30+ times sometimes more sometimes less, then finally the beeps dont start and the screen is working. So needless to say its still working in the mean time, but its just such a pain if I shut it down. . For now I am just going to continue using standby but when I have updates sometimes i need to shut down.

While installing, or often before, the power randomly cuts off with no warning at random places. Booting from battery: loads fine up to windows xp loading screen then freezes..
booting plugged into wall: Goes absolutely fine
also the laptop will run off the battery AFTER being booted up with the wall socket.
