View 14 RepliesI had my Toshiba Tecra M5 laptop all set up to use when the time comes to go in a home.I was downloading Microsoft updates last night rather lenghty download so I stepped away for a moment to watch a little TV. Well during the download the battery ran out. I plugged in the power thinking that the PC would continue with the download but no the only way to shut it down was to pull the plug. I then plugged in the power and the download did start but froze when about half finished. Only option was to pull the plug again.

View 3 Replies View RelatedAfter getting the F11 restore (full factory format and reinstall) to work I went to the MS update site. This machine is running XP Pro SP1. I want to get the updates and install SP2. At the MS update site I see many updates needed and I start the download. They all download but on install they hang. Restarting gives the same problem. So I pop the SP2 disk in the drive and start it. It extracts, starts the Inventory, and hangs. Laptop doesn't freeze, the install just stops. Even tried it in Safe Mode and it hangs either on the Inventory or the next item, I forget which one.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a HP ze5568cl laptop (Windows XP SP2). For a few years we've had trouble with the power connector. We've just wiggled the power cable to keep it connected and lived with the problem. It also gets very hot and the fan runs constantly. Yesterday when I powered it on there was no power, absolutely nothing. My husband has some electronic knowledge so we took the laptop apart and he soldered the loose part of the power connector. While he was doing that I cleaned the fan (couldn't believe how much dust was in there.When we plugged in the power cable the orange light came on so we were excited. When we powered it on all the keyboard lights lit up so we thought we had fixed the problem but.that's all it did. It went no further except that the fan kicked on.There is a clicking noise coming from the cd drive about every second with the green light flashing. I suppose it is checking to see if there is a bootable cd in the cd drive. I have attempted to change the boot order by holding F1, then F2 but it still continues to try to read the cd drive. I can't get to the screen that will allow me to change the boot order.
I also put the OS disk in the cd drive, hoping that it would start with the disk but it just clicks. Hubby removed the cover of the cd drive and I could see that the cd is spinning.There were no problems with this laptop prior to the power problem. It was really working very well especially considering the age of it.
The information in my sig is not for the computer with the problem. It's actually for an old computer which my son now has at college.
I am running windows xp pro with all updates on a intel III 1000 processer with 2 250gb hds. my ISP runs an antivirus and I run Norton antivirus and Spy Sweeper. Late yesterday windows did an automatic update and I installed them. This morning I cannot boot on the hd with the updates. I reach the window that displays system info in b/w. At the bottom of this screen are two sets of two symbols a Y followed by an infinity symbol. On this hd I do not reach the point of going to safe mode. I booted on the second drive but it is not up to date (luckily?). I cannot determine how to remove the updates from the first drive. I tried System Recovery, I get a message that it is corrupt and do I want to send a message to Microsoft.

Following that the boot up screen would keep cycling without ever logging into Windows. The BSOD error is STOP: C000012a. I have read many forums and I believe the best course of action is to reinstall the OS. It seems there is an error with the Windows updates when being installed on a version of XP which is bundled with SP3 already installed.

View 14 Replies View RelatedIve only been using Xp for about 6 months now, and so far all had been ok. SP2 installed fine a while back, and I am up to-date with Microsoft auto updates. Yesterday I booted up and the system froze just after running the BIOS checks, it didnt reach as far as the OS system flicking in at all, I just had a black screen. Several reboots later, I decided to boot from the master setup disk which took me to a point where I selected R, for restore to an already installed OS.
I was then asked to type in the Administrator password - this I duly did as its the only one I have installed..... and it kept rejecting it. In the end I rebooted yet again, this time without the cd being the first boot option, and XP loaded as if there had been no problem at all. I've virus checked the system and run registry checks and can find nothing wrong at all.
I got a Compaq notebook.Since a few weeks my battery indicator is gone in die the lower taskbar. I ticked all the boxes in the Configuration screen but still no pic.Does anybody know how to solve this? Has it something to do with the register?

Just a flashing cursor on the top left corner, no post, boot screen, nuttin... if I unplugged the ac adapter, it would get to boot screen then freeze. So I bought a new ac adapter. No go. Still wont boot. Locks up. Battery indicator light dont show amber but it does recharge the battery.So... I got it booted, and then when I plug in the ac adapter, boom, instant lock up...Ive tried booting just on ac and just on battery... no go...SO i reinstalled xp... gets to the "installing devices" part, at 35 minutes remaining and locks up every ime...

Turned it off one night and all was well, turn it on the next day and the desktop is differnt one, home page went from google to msn, and the e-mail had to be redone from the start. (out look express) No I am finding more and more things like, the windows tour gude that normally comes up when windows is first put on starts coming up, the files and settings transfer wizard shows up in the start menu even tho it was not used. Spybot was already on the computer but went to start it and had to go through it like you were just putting it on the computer. All these things can it mean something?? I have a Medion Laptop that's running windows xp, it was working perfectly fine until i restarted it and now i can't get it to boot up! When i try and load windows it comes up with a blue screen saying boot from floppy, cd rom or hard drive but when i pick any of them options it does nothing.
