I'd like the computer to start with the Number Lock engaged so I went into the BIOS and made sure that it was set to always be on. But when Windows takes over the startup procedure it shuts the Num Lock off. Why is Windows doing this and how to I fix it? Registry edit?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have really screwed up my computer --dell dimension 2400 ? talk about a mess. I wanted to clean off the hard drive, so I tried to reinstall xp using a friend?s cd because the only xp cd I could find was an upgrade (from win98).I don?t know what I did wrong (or if the problem was with the cd), but setup got into a loop we could not get out of.Since I had my xp cd to upgrade from 98, we tried to install win98. It did clean off the hard drive, but it failed to install completely and now the cd drive will not work. And when I click on IE, an error message ?Msoobe? comes up and says it has perfomed an illegal operation and shuts down.My brother also has a dell dimension 2400, and he thought there was a way to reset the computer to its original configuation. I tried the Control+F11 that he suggested, but the screen says it needs a device file to run that it cannot find. There is a line that reads
Vnetbios.
I am trying to "Killdisk" my HD so I can reinstall Win Xp on my Dell Dimension 2400 computer.I did reinstall Win Xp many time without any problem in the past, but this time something is totally wrong. It usually take aprox. 1 hour to reinstall but this time it took 5 hours and in the end:"13 minutes to finish install"and it frozes and nothing happen after that, I tryed 5 times with same result.I guess it got Virus/Malware in the root of computer memory. So I tryed to use Killdisk to clean up and start new to reinstall Win Xp, but I got following resxponse:"Error loading Free Dos Kernell"

There was no other choices. So I believe that we destroyed the restore partition without knowing it had one.If I buy a Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition OEM Version will it work to solve this problem? TigerDirect sells a copy. I need the full disc and not an upgrade. But will we have drivers problems. He does have other disc with his Dell which one says its for drivers but in reality its just disc of Docs. And one that does actually install the modem as he's still on dialup. Can I wipe his hard-drive clean and install an OEM version of Home Edition and will things work?A little out of pocket money is easier then suffering

It's a pre June 2004 computer so the Ctrl F11 startup trick doens't work and i don't have a restore disk.
I am working on a PC for a friend and after installing Adaware,Spybot S&D, Spywareblaster and Avast I found too many things wrong with the PC and was trying to just reinstall Windows instead. I followed Dells instructions to Hold down Control and then hit F11 and then release both at the same time to get to the restore screen. Well it never came up and I got to the Safe Mode Last Known Good Configuration screen instead. I kept trying and nothing would change, so I picked Safe Mode. Now all I get is the BSOD that states Unmountable boot volume. Stop Error 0x000000ed (0x83376900,0xc0000006,0x0000000,0x0000000)
View 12 Replies View RelatedWe have a Dell Dimension 2400 with Windows XP installed. We also have Norton Internet Security 2007, Windows Defender, and do not seem to have any viruses or spyware. Out hard drive is just under half full (17.5 GB of 37.2 GB).takes 5 or 6 minutes from the time we turn on the computer until we can actually do something with it (connect to the internet with IE or check email with Outlook 2003). I uninstalled Google Desktop and turned off Windows Messenger (from the start menu), both of which helped some (used to be even slower). I have tried to uninstall Dell Alert (which starts every time) but am unable to with Uninstall Programs and cannot find DAMon.exe to just delete that. Once it is up and running, the PC is reasonably fast (the problem is just at the startup and first 5 to 10 minutes). I have a newer laptop I use on our wireless network and it connects very quickly to the internet so that is not the problem (as far as I can tell). We did recently switch from a cable modem to slightly slower DSL.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Dimension 2400 1.6ghz 1gb RAM with XP Pro on it for several years now. It has many programs installed on it. I purchased a faster used Dell Dimension 8400 3.6ghz hyperthreading 3gb RAM with XP Pro on it.My question is simple. My Dimension 2400 has an IDE hard drive and the 8400 has SATA. Rather than spend days re-installing and tweaking all of the programs on the 8400 I tried the following. I used Acronis Easy Migrate 7 to Image the IDE hard drive to the SATA hard drive and installed it into the 8400. It would not boot, I tried a repair install, then while booting I get a blue screen stop Error 0x0000007B. What do I have to do to fix this so it will boot?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI work as a technician in a number of Primary Schools and I have been asked by some of the schools if there is a way to ensure that Number Lock is switched off on all machines before they log in. I have done a few searches on google but have no results that work.I have tried editing the registry however this only works AFTER they have logged in. Disabling Num Lock at boot in bios doesn't work as windows likes to override this setting. The reason i have been asked for this is that the schools have Laptops which the children use and when they are typing in their usernames they are obviously getting a mixture of numbers and letters in the username field.Does anyone have ANY ideas how i can disable the number lock at boot?
