View 5 RepliesI set up a new Dell Optiplex 620 lunchbox with XP SP2 Pro recently that has an issue I don't know how to resolve. I'd like the computer to start with the Number Lock engaged so I went into the BIOS and made sure that it was set to always be on. But when Windows takes over the startup procedure it shuts the Num Lock off. Why is Windows doing this and how to I fix it? Registry edit?

I have a desktop which I always have Num Lock on as it has its own dedicated keypad. The problem is when I Remote Desktop into my laptop my laptop does not have the dedicated keypad the numbers on the keypad portion are actually 1/3rd of the letters on the keyboard (I.E I,O,P would be 7,8,9) when numlock is on. It's fine until I disconnect and I go home...
When I get home I start typing as I normally would but half the letters look like numbers because the Num Lock is still on from when I used Remote Desktop to connect in.
I know the obvoius solution is to turn off Numlock on my PC before I disconnect Remote Desktop from the Laptop but I really just want the Laptop to revert back to its original keyboard state once I disconnect...
Anyone know of a solution?

He installed a new primary HDD and borrowed a Key # temporarily. The PC does not boot the drive from the former PC which he installed as a slave drive. Belarc and Everest will not read that drive so no help there. He can open and look in the slave drive(F) and tried copying the wpa.dbl file to the new drive but it did not work, even in safe mode. Any ideas how he can recover the Key # from the old drive so he can use it on the new drive?

View 8 Replies View RelatedFor an unknown reason about a month ago, my computer turns itself back on after I have powered down. I have to turn off the power back at the surge protector to keep it from starting itself back up. Apparently, I pulled an "automatic wakeup switch" but do not know what or how to turn it back off. Now when my wife hollers for me to get off the computer and start the dishes, I can't just power down and leave the room. I have to wait for windows to close and the computer to shut off, then crawl behind the desk and turn off the power source before I can get away.

I keep Zonealarm updated and running as well as MS anti-spyware and Spyware Blaster.I recently deleted all scheduling in AVG, but it didn't help. It's been doing this for a while, but at first I thought it was just me not shutting the system off. The last couple of times I watched to make sure the computer had turned off. I've also been disabling my internet connection before shutdown. It's not My imagination - but what could it be?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have just reinstalled Windows XP Professional 2007 - sad story I'll not bore you with. The problem that remains is with the sound system. On boot up, after login, the familiar windows login theme starts but then stops half way through. The PC continues to boot and all applications function except for the sound system. All drivers show they are functioning correctly in Device Manager. The only odd thing I notice is that 'Legacy Audio Drivers' Properties has no entry The volume settings are ok and not muted. What is it that can disable the sound sytem in this manner?

I got home about 7 hours later and when I tried to return to desktop, the fan went on loudly but kept on going and nothing would be displayed on the screen. I just turned it off by the front panel button and went to sleep. This morning, I tried unplugging the whole machine from the electricity plug and replugging it in..well it worked! It started but the fan was constantly working for some reason.I downloaded SpeedFan and at the time the temp was like 43 (normal?). Then I turned it off to see what was wrong with the fan. I opened the box and did a small vacuum just trying to collect the dust.after that NO LUCK.The computer doesn't even come on anymore. I have important files on it.I'm going to be screwed.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy computer boots up and runs fine for several minutes to a few hours then all of a sudden the monitor screen goes black and (if it is on the screen) the mouse pointer gets big. I have to reboot and then sometimes it will work fine for as long as I am using it. Sometimes it does the same things several hours later or several minutes later. In other words I have not been able to establish a pattern for when it happens. Anybody have any ideas what may be going on? I use Windows 2000 Pro, Amd processor(sempron), 512 Megs of RAM, Computer motherboard about a year old.I got windows 2000 installed because I could not get XP registered with MS after old MB died. I kinda like Win 2K better anyway.I have cleaned out my case and tried to make sure processor is not overheating.Just am stumped as to what may be the problem.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI started out having a trojan or a virus that kept me from being able to do much on my computer, and I was running VERY slow. So I tried doing a Restore point and that did not do, because my computer could not find a restore point it could work from. I had several, but I would get an error message saying I could not use that restore point. Anyway, I then decided to reformat it. After I did that, my monitor started acting up. It has NEVER done this before... It would be on, and I would be computing right along, and all of a sudden my monitor would just go black! Then it would completely log off. I would get a message saying there was no connection. It never did completely turn the computer off (like some errors usuallly do) it was JUST the monitor, but I could not get the monitor to come back on unless I turned the computer off myself and rebooted it. I did a reboot and it worked for about 30 minutes and then started doing the same thing all over again, but this time it would only work about 10 mintues then shut down the monitor. I would reboot and the same thing would happen over and over again.
I went to microsoft online and looked for the Windows XP downloads and decided to try and update anything I needed. It did all the updates and said I had something that was damaged and needed repaired so it fixed that problem and I tried it again after the reboot. Still nothing helped the problem. My DH first thought it may be the video card. He opened it up to check and found it was very dirty and dusty around the fans etc.so he cleaned it, hoping that may have been the problem and put it back together. I tried it again and got the same thing! NOW, it will work about 2 minutes before it turns itself off! So tonight he is going to try a different video card in it and see if that helps...if not he said it may be the motherboard. Do you have any other suggestions as to what may be causing this problem? I am at a loss myself.I have also ran my ZoneAlarm Suite, nothing picked up, McAffee, found nothing, AVG found nothing, I did a disk defrag and that did not help either. I uninstalled all the antivirus and antispyware and still did not help. I now have only the McAffee running on it. (By the way I did not have all the antivirus programs running at the same time, ever.)
