I just restored my laptop with Xp and the internet was fine, i installed Sp2 and it stopped working? i don't know if this is a common problem but i was so annoyed There is something wrong with either the proxy or the firewall so the troubleshooter says, but i have no proxy or a firewall.
sometimes if i stop using a browser window for about 10mins, the browser seems to stop seeing the internet (until i reboot). this happens with both internet explorer and firefox. it brings up 'cannot find server' etc, as if i had no active connection. although all my other programs are using the internet fine, MSN messenger, limewire, download managers etc i recently reinstalled, im running windows xp pro with SP2 and all the latest updates. and have internet explorer 6, and mozilla firefox 1.5. i have an ADSL connection thru a wireless router.
I'm the administrator of my System. My younger brother watches porn over the internet. He has a separate user account. Is there any way by which i can prevent him from accessing the internet completely for a few days.
I am having such problems with my computer! I am sure that there are a million reasons why computers lock up, not blue screen of death, but rather just simply lock up. The screen stays on exactly what I am working on, but I can't do anything. The mouse is locked up, control alt delete doesn't work nothing works. It mostly happens while I am on the net, but sometimes happens in word also. I have checked RAM, heat and power supply and all of those things checked out fine. I added more RAM thinking that might be the problem but nop.
Just recently I've started to lose my USB cable modem connection while on standby. This was not occurring previously. Obviously some setting has gotten changed and I don't know how it happened, I'm relatively certain its in my Widows XP Home Edition software.By trial and error I have learned to reconnect by going to the control panel, network connections, right-clicking on the "Local area connection" heading" and clicking on "disable", which changes the status from "limited or no connection" to "disabled". I then right-click on the heading again and click on "enable". This causes a reconnection. Obviously, I would rather not have to go thru this process each time I go on standby.Since I have a USB connection, a tech advisor at another support forum has already had me do the following; Control Panel/System/Hardware/DeviceManager/ UniversalSerialBusControllers/PowerManagementtab(s) and uncheck each of the (4) options to shut down on standby to save power. For whatever reason, this didn't work, and now he's suggesting that I get an ethernet connection instead. I'm sure that would be superior and maybe solve the problem (and maybe not), but I don't have an ethernet card and I also may soon have to revert to a dial-up connection due to cost..I also confess to disabling the system timer [under system devices] but not knowing what that really meant. What I do know, however, is that the connection is still shutting down on standby.
I have a plain, blank screensaver enabled that is passworded. My roommates complain that when I leave and this screensaver becomes enabled, their internet stops working. We have cable internet and network through a simple router. My question is - is this really the case? Would my screensaver really cause their internet to slowdown/stop?? This is what they claim and it's beginning to get on my nerves.
I have Windows XP Home. When I click onto 'Internet Explorer' a window pops up flashing "VIRUS INFECTION" requesting download of spyware removal tool. When I click onto the 'scanner & remover' bar, "SPYWARE WIZARD WEB SITE" appears, requesting me to buy the software. There is no way for me to get out of this window, only by deleting at the red cross, top right corner. How to stop this automatic pop up happening? I have Spybot - Search & Destroy - which after running shows no spyware AVG 7.5 - Free Edition - which after running shows no virus.
windows 2000 pro, seems to run ok until you try to get on the internet. you can get around on it ok going to control panel you can download programs etc but the min you plug in a network cable you really even need to doubleclick on the internet if you wait a few seconds after you plug in the network cable right away a blue box pops up with this stop error Stop 0x0000001E (0xC0000005) and then three more sets of all zero's KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED.

I'm in the middle of a basic networking lab and one of my VM's crashed. As our host, we use Windows XP. For virtualization we use VMware Workstation. I had a problem installing the Internet Printing Client for my lab. I got an error saying that there wasn't enough hard drive space. I then shut down my VM and added another hard drive. Upon startup I was greeted with: STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} i did this:Removing the virtual HDD I added before the problems started. Restarting the VM. Restarting the host machine. Trying the VM on another machine. Booting to .iso and using the repair console with the command chkdsk C: /r.
I am constantly finding my internet folders, temp folders, recent items and other folders filled with junk links which are taking up quite a bit of space on the drive. Before I did a complete rebuild, I managed to dump over a gigabyte of junk and obsolete files from the drive, and all this logging stuff just gets on my nerves.
This little notice window is constantly popping up on my desktop. I close it etc., but it keeps coming back....I've looked all thrugh internet options, but I can't find a way to stop it.
Major virus infection on computer resulted in fdisk and reformat. I used Win 98SE to fdisk and reformat, as I couldn't for the life of me find a format on the Dell Operating reinstallation CD. (could be first mistake)
Used Win 98 SE startup diskette to start system w/CD rom support.
Navigated to D: Drive which containe the XP OS reinstallation. Navigated to I386 folder and typed WINNT to begin reinstalling files.
Start WIn XP setup and began copying files to HD.
Screen shows: The MS-DOS based portion of setup is complete. Setup will now restart you computer. After your computer restarts, WIN XP Setup will continue. Remove floppy, etc.
Computer restarts - did inspection of system, shows Win XP Setup, loading files (drivers, controllers, etc.)
Starting windows - Welcom to Setup: 1. Setup - press enter 2. Repair (using Repair Console) 3. Quite - F3
Pressed enter
Next message:
Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer. This may involve running a mfg supplied diagnostics or setup program.
Setup cannot continue Press F3
System then attempts reboot, attempts installation again by booting from HD. Then error message:
Dell Deminsion 4600 series p4 processor @2.4 GHz 512 MD DDR SDRAM @ 400 MHz 128 MB DDR NVidia GeForce FX 5200 graphics card 80GB 7200 RMP Ultra ATA HD Win XP Pro SP1 48x/24x/48x CD-RW Drive SoundBlaster Live! w/ 5.1 support
I have looked on MS site for the error code and think I understand that the problem is either a hd controller device driver is not installing from the Dell Reinstallation CD and therefore stops the installation of the software. How I can possibly extract and install the driver setup may be looking for.
STOP 0x00000050 (0x8CCC1345, 0x0000001, 0x808A65A1, 0x00000000) These both happen when installing windows, either when at 95% of copying files or when booting into windows.
After long periods of my internet connection being idle (2+ hours usually), all programs requiring internet access are unable to connect. By idle I mean I leave to run some errands with no programs other than Zone Alarm running. My DSL modem still has all lights flashing and active. There are a couple other scenarios where this occurs as well. Ex. I'm playing WoW for extended periods but not using the internet through any other program, then upon alt-tabbing no other applications are able to connect to the internet even though WoW is still connected and functioning. Rebooting the router/modem doesn't fix it, but rebooting the comp does.
I think that I have a virus which is stopping me from 1) Installing Norton Internet Security 2005 properly, and 2) Stopping me from accessing all anti-virus related sites, for example - www.symantec.com, ww.grisoft.com, www.pandasoftware.com, and when i tried to download AVG 6.0 from another site which was unrelated to antivirus, I found that I could access the site but the download failed.
C:WindowsTemporary Internet Filescontent.ie5, which i cannot seem to do. They say i should see a series of 4 or more random 8 character names like "ADOZMZS1", which again, I cannot figure this out. So if anyone could
do internet users get assigned a unique ip address everytime you connect to the internet? and what is the difference between a ip address and a mac address? different types of a networks?
computer Spec:XP Home, SP3, kaspersky Internet Security 2009I have a weird problem back in September I had XP home installed with all the latest windows and software updated. Then I realize that something was cutting my internet in half I would always do a speed test with cable speakeasy.net and it would always show my down over 17000kbps Up 2049kbps I have comcast Cable. but now my speed EVER go over 4000kbps my upload is always good 2000kbps but my down is horrible, whenever I search a site I always get a 6 second pause then it gos straight to it and my PC also took a little drop in speed as well and i've use every problem that I know is fine to use " spybot, adware personal, Kaspersky, microtrend online, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, CounterSpy, norton online, ccleaner, windows defender, I forgot the rest but nothing worked. So I decided to go back to Vista home install all my usual programs
computer in my possession crashed, and when i reset, my internet has gone wonky. I use MSN as my ISP, and before, i could access internet explorer, or firefox, or any program without ever actually having to sign in to MSN. after the crash, however, i now have to sign in to access internet explorer, firefox, and a couple programs. what angers me, however, is that i DONT have to sign in to access trillian. Limewire, also, will connect, but wont download anything without msn being logged in. How do i get back to how it was? And no, system restore did not work.
I read that in TOOLS--->Internet options--->Advance, there's a setting that I can make the pulldown manu not be truncated. I can't find it for the life of me.
I have a number of XP computers (all SP2) connected to the Net via a wireless modem/router. Everything was fine until a few days ago when my connection speed dramatically slowed after being online for a few hours. This happens to all of the PCs in my home - so it's nothing internal to my PC. I tried to transfer a large file across the wireless network and it transferred fine (5Mb in 10 seconds). I can also connect to the router's web management software without problem. So it's not the wireless connection. Which leaves either my modem/router or my broadband connection. The router's "DSL" light is always on which infers that my broadband connection is OK. So that leaves my modem/router.
My users are unable to access the internet via Internet Explorer 7.With Firefox and changes in the proxy it works good, however, unable to access with Internet Explorer.
I'm thinking maybe the user's profile has problem. However, after deleting the user's profile and have her logged in to create a new profile, it still would not work.
How come it works with Firefox but not with Internet Explorer?
