The system restore tool with Microsoft Windows XP is a very valuable application. When enabled on a drive, it automatically creates a backup when ever you install a software application or change add or change drivers. There is one downsite to this process though. It can take up a lot of disk space. When I cleaned my old system restore checkpoints on my system I gained more than two gigabytes of disk space. Before you delete all of your old system check points, make sure that you system is stable for a few days after applying tweaks from this site and after installing new software or hardware drivers. I currently have 13.0 GB of used space and 5.58 GB of free space. I would like to get more free space. My computer is about 2 years old. In those two years, I had to re-install Windows XP and everything else on my computer...for reasons unknown...I recently performed a New Installation of Windows XP on my computer. I don't have alot of things installed on my computer. The total space all the programs in my Add and Remove programs file takes up is only 1GB. Since I had to start over and re-install everything and my programs only add up to 1GB, Shouldn't I have more free space ?
My HP XP Home edition PC suxssss. My internet is really slow at first i thought it was my network but it ended up being my PC .I did System Recovery . I was able to get internet explorer but wasnt sure what AntiSpyware to get . I just ran a scan from windows live and it detected 30 viruses so far. DO i need adware and spyware. I never had a problem with the MAC before srry to say but PCS sux .
is it a good idea to clean the registery say after 3 months of usage or after 4- 5 uninstallation of the softwares. Generally there are lots of registery cleaners avaliable claiming to boost the windows speed,but is it recomended by windows ? even if proper mode of un installations is carried out. If yes then please suggest some safe software for the same.

I have a memory problem, I have 248 MB of physical memory and only 88MB free. That is better than it was last night -- last night I had only 33MB free. My virtual memory is 606 MB with 244MB free.I cannot access certain things all of a sudden -- for instance, when I click in the system tools to do a disk defrag it never comes up. When I click on the Set Program Access and Defaults it never comes up. In control panel when I click on any of the icons in Administrative Tools -- none of them open.when the computer boots up it has the screen where it is asking for a password
Shutting down my extra processes. I am trying to boost my framerates while online games. I have no idea which ones to stop and which to leave running. Does anyone have a system for doing this? I forgot how to post what I have running.
please hijack this log. also, when i run aol instant messenger and i open a chat box a window comes up and sais instant messenger has encountered a problem and needs to close....i tried uninstall and reinstall numerous times.
I did not pay attention to what key I accidentally pressed.Once I pressed it, the InstantShare window pops up, asking for inserting a CD-ROM to run it.I keep pressing the cancel button.It does not do anything but keep mutiplying to pop another InstantShare window up.I shut the computer down.It does not solve the problem. Now, it's always popping up and on my desktop.
i have XP Home OS laptop pc playing games .whatever he did i don't know he insists he closed it down properly but when i have come to start it up this morning everything on the welcome screen is upside down.is there a quick way to rectify this or is a system restore to previous point the only solution
Whenever I play a graphically intnsive such as Doom3 or Painkiller, every so often the screen freezes for 15-30 secs then all is Ok again.I have a P4 3.2, GeForce4Ti video card and 1Gb RAM so I don't think the hardware is a problem
I noticed that when I am using aim now... when i receive a new im, the window doesn't flash anymore when im doing something else... i could be listening to music on itunes, etc and not hear the new im sound and it wont flash orange anymore, causing me to miss a LOT of im's.

Well here is a way to send instant messages to your friends over such networks as long as you have their ip or the name of the computer on the network. An easy way to find a computer's ip address is to type cmd in the run box on your start menu. This will start the command prompt. Type "ipconfig /all" with a space between "ipconfig and /all".That will list the computer's ip address along with other network specs. Now that you have the ip of that computer, you may send instant messages to it.Go to the run command in your start menu. Type cmd in the box which will open the command prompt just like above.Type: net send "ip address" message. If the computer you were trying to send a "Hello" message to had the ip address of 127.10.1.1,you would type "net send 127.10.1.1 Hello" Additionally, it is possible to use a wild card such as * in the ip address parameter. Example: net send * message

This is great for system administrators to send out messages to all windows computers on the network notifying them that you are going to be taking down the server or something. However, if you are a student and feel like pulling a prank at school by sending some message across the school network, you will screw yourself. is there a way for the windows task manager (alt-ctrl-del) to appear in an instant when i press the keys? the window is taking forever to appear in front of non-responding programs.it seems like the pc is trying to solve the problem first, but i just want to end whatever it is processing quickly.

I have 69.1 memory free from 74.5 and i noticed no matter how much i delete i cant get up into the 70s.For example this month i have deleted a ton of music files that came up to about 400mb,Then a few programs that were around 50mb each and still nothing .If anything it seems i am going down in memory instead of gaining from deleting these programs.
The problem I'm having is, every week I do a scan disk and defrag. I've noticed that once defraged since a few weeks ago I HAVE GONE from over 70% free space down to only under 40%....I don't run any major software at the moment BUTDO use the internet on ADSL most days BUT not to any great extent. The only connection I can c is this copying Dig pix straight to disc...Am I right or is there sumthing else going on
i wanted to copy a cd image 4.18GB ISO format from partition F: NTFS 9GB free to partition D: (FAT32 12GB free space) and windows gives me that crap there is not enough space and i should do a disk clean up. I made a disk clean up to partition D: and there was 3GB of system restore files!!! maybe coz i deleted 6GB earlier anyway i deleted the system restore files
Only NTFS partions can have files with file size more than 4GB..i hope theres nothing wrong with my windows or my hard disk..and i wanna know if theres a way to move that ISO image..thanx in advance.
I've noticed sometimes that the Free Space on my harddrives won't reflect changes I've made. For example, on my 28.6gb F: drive, I had about 586mb free. I just deleted a video file of about 700 mb, so it should be up to about 1.2 gb. Oddly enough, its still at 586mb.
I recently noticed that my free space on hard drive has been eroded and my used space has been increasing. I have not added any software. Much to my dismay I cannot figure out why this would occur. We did make recovery disks and removed our partition some weeks ago. It seems our C drive is using up space without any explanation. Ran many different anti virus and spyware software and they did not detect anything.
I am trying to upgrade the RAM memory on my Gateway MX3230 notebook. It presently has 256 MB and I would like to upgrade to 1 GB. I have checked the Gateway website and and upgrade to 1 GB is acceptable. I purchased a memory module from Kingston which was listed as being compatible with my laptop. When I tried installing the module, the computer will not start, nothing but black screen. It's as thought there is no memory at all. I tried re-installing the module making sure it was inserted in as far as it will go, still no luck. There is no settings in bios that I can see that would prevent the acceptance of this module
I am using Intel pentium 4 cpu 2.40GHz, 1.25 GB RAM. Iam using 80 GB samsung hard disk. I installed Microsoft Windows XP Professional service pack 2 on a drive of 10 GB memory space with NTFS file system. After the installation of Win XP, the drive properties shows 4.9 GB of used memory and only 4.45 GB of free memory, but when I try to find total memory occupied for all the files in that drive (using "select-all" and properties) the used memory is only 2.3 GB only.
Now I don't understand the huge difference of this memories calculations. Where that extra used memory gone, when the total memory occupied by all the files is much less.
why my Windowx XP sees only 1024 MB memory while I've increased the original memory of 512 MB by 2x 512 MB ?My motherboard has three DDR-slots. It had from the beginning a Kingston K 512MB PC2700 module in slot #1. This week I've added two Kingston K512 UDIMM 512MB PC2700 modules in the slots #2 and #3.All three modules has the type name KVR333X64C25/512, so I thought they would be compatible.

I have a white box Pentium 4 CPU with XP professional service pack 2 build 2600 installed. The motherboard is an intel D865GLC with 512 MB RAM installed in Dual channel mode with 1 256 MB stick of ram in slot zero of bank 1 and 1 256 MB stick of ram in slot zero of bank 2. This memory is dual channel compatible. I tried to add another 2 sticks of the same type ram but from a different manufacturer. Here's the problem: I can use any 2 of the 4 sticks of ram together, both from the same manufacturer or 1 from 1 manufacturer and 1 from the other for a total of 512 MB. Everything works fine. I can place one stick in slot 0 of bank 1 and the other in slot 0 of bank 2 or I can place 1 in slot 1 bank 1 and 1 in slot 1 of bank 2 with no problems. I can even place a 3rd stick of the same type ram in any open slot and all's fine (except the machine complains that this is not an optimal memory setup). Memtest86 reports no errors with any of the above configurations
I had to uninstall HP Photosmart C4100 series only because I was missing some wording on the buttons that just disappeared for some reason, It said to uninstall the program and then just reinstall it. Well now, when I go to reinstall, it will not automatically start so I clicked on my computer and dvd-rw Drive (E and there are no files, in fact it states that my my file system is CDFS and the CDA Default - Full It says all space used 672 MB and Free Space 0 Bytes
I was running Outlook, AIM, and IE at the same. After a few moment, I'd get this following message:
Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of your Virtual Memory Paging file. During this process, memory requests for some applications may be denied.
When I hit OK, all my applications would close, except my Outlook. I'm running Win2K with 512 memory. My computer is only 1.5 years old. I didn't play any games or download anything so it's not heavily used. But why the message then?
I don't really have a problem on my hands, but I would like to ask a few questions relating to Virtual Memory and Memory Leak.
I downloaded a game back in December, but hasn't been installed as yet. I heard that it is created using "C++" or "C" (whatever it is), and I learned that it has a memory leak. My Virtual Memory was running low (it may already have beforehand) by the time the game was installed. My computer crashed two days later as a result.
But some users haven't experienced any problems with the game. My question is, is it a better idea for me to install the game on a CD-ROM or USB Drive and play it from that media type (instead of from the hard drive) so that I can protect my PC from crashing due to low virtual memory?

I have a Ecs P4vxasd Motherboard, Pga socket 423. The mainboard accomodates 2 DDR 184 pin 2.5v + 2 SDR 168 pin 3.3v Dimm sockets with a total capacity of etting various blue screen errors, to go along with several reloads. I downloaded a memory diagnostic program from this site. My computer didn't pass the test, so I removed on stick and it passed this time. I assumed that the memory stick was my problem, and ordered a DDR 512 mb pc3200 stick from Curcial.com. I installed the new memory and got the same error from the diag. test. I began swapping memory around. all three sticks worked fine by themselves in either slot, but put two together & I would get a bad diag.
