Shutting Down Extra Processes / Boost Framerates While Online Games
Jul 17, 2005
Shutting down my extra processes. I am trying to boost my framerates while online games. I have no idea which ones to stop and which to leave running. Does anyone have a system for doing this? I forgot how to post what I have running.

I am getting lag in online games. I checked my running processes and it said that I have 43 running. How do I know which of these I can shut down for good safely? Does that number seem high? Or is that a normal amount?

When i put my computer in standby or hibernation...about 75% of the time, when i bring it out of said state, i can use instant messaging, play online games, my internet works, but not my internet browser. neither firefox or IE works, it acts just as if i was offline. my second problem...is when using a program that opens an HTM or HTML file inside itself (counter-strike, anti-virus, just about anything), it asks me before it opens it, and if i click ok, it opens it in my internet browser, and i have no idea why. this gets REALLY annoying, especially during online gaming when i can't see in-game guides to do things, and it opens up 3-4 dialog screens before every single game.

Lately when I have gone to play java games, at sites like pogo and some other I have not been able to do so. As soon as the game starts to load, the browser crashes. I have both Firefox 1.5.0.6 and the most recent version of IE and the same thing happens in both cases. It has always worked before, and no changes have been made to the system recently. I have SUN Java and it says it is the most recent version when I check for updates.
It does put a file on my desktop when it crashes titled: hs_err_pid2192.log I don't know what any of it means really so Here are the contents, any ideas of how to fix this probem?: An unexpected error has been detected by HotSpot Virtual Machine: EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc0000005) at pc=0x01899558, pid=2192, tid=4024 Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (1.5.0_06-b05 mixed mode)Problematic frame: C [YPCLSP.dll+0x9558]

At any one time I have approx 60 processes running, even after just booting up my computer. Although I am not a computer expert, this seems like too many to me. I was wondering if anyone could help me by telling me if this definitely is too many to run at once, and if there is some way I can post a list of the running processes and have someone with more knowledge help me get rid of some of them.

Win Xp, Dell and cable connection When I do ctrl>alt>del, it shows 17 System processes running. Are all of these necessary? Also, some of the other running processes i recognize, i.e. firewall, IM, anti-virus, but some of them I don't have a clue what they are. Is there a list somewhere of what should/shouldn't be running necessarily?

The system restore tool with Microsoft Windows XP is a very valuable application. When enabled on a drive, it automatically creates a backup when ever you install a software application or change add or change drivers. There is one downsite to this process though. It can take up a lot of disk space. When I cleaned my old system restore checkpoints on my system I gained more than two gigabytes of disk space. Before you delete all of your old system check points, make sure that you system is stable for a few days after applying tweaks from this site and after installing new software or hardware drivers. To clear old system restore on your drive except for the most recent checkpoint

I have a custom pc with 512Mb of memory and want to add 1Gb to that.Ive already
check at Kingston,Crucial and Gigabyte sites and know I need a DDR-333 memory.
I have some questions though.
1.Will I need to add an extra fan to avoid higher temperature anywhere?
2.How can I know if my existing memory stick will work with the new one?
3.Do I need to change any configuration in my computer?

I'm running xp, and my c drive has now become c,f and g.when checking in disk management, there are no volume labels assigned. In Disk 0, it shows the three partitions (I've no clue why there are 3, is that standard?)39 MB FAT, 69.81 GB NTFS, and 4.64 GB FAT32.This happened after a failed software install that dell refused to help with (there's a shocker)It's just an annoyance, nothing more, but I would like to get it back to being just the c drive without risking losing anything in the process. Something I can do safely or just live with it?
