my computer supplier has gone bust, ceased trading and is out of business. My Windows XP Pro is an OEM version. Is there anything I can do short of purchasing XP Pro again? I have just whacked in a new hard drive to the 'pooter. It seems far superior in many respects to the ones that came with the computer in the
first place. What I'd like to do is use tthe new drive as Windows disk C.
I have just bought and installed (to the point of completing initialization under Disk Management) a new 1 TB hard drive. Originally, I was planning to use it solely for data storage.However, I am thinking of installing Windows XP Pro and all the programs I currently use on it, thereby making it the new OS and programs drive, while using the original 120 GB HD as a data/backup drive.I think the main appeal of doing this, for me, is that it also presents an opportunity to reinstall Windows on a machine which hasn't had this done for more than three years, and which currently seems to take at least five minutes to boot to a "usable" state, despite having a reasonably high spec for its age (it was bought in 2001, but as a result of the upgrade

I have 2 questions.
I've been restoring, updating and making a new working image every Sunday for over a year and it's time for a format and new install, partly because the image is getting too big. My OEM XP Pro CD is SP2 which obviously will go onto drive C. I've downloaded SP3 and dotnetfx35 - will I come across any problems if I install them onto drive D? Seems logical that I won't, but what is logical when it comes to Microsoft? If this is possible, it seems reasonable that I can move all of those update files held in the Windows directory to the same location where I install the two big files, which should cut down on a lot of space on drive C over time...............
I been haveing trouble installing xp pro on my hard drive. I am able to get through the windows install, computer reboots then starts the process all over again starting from the blue screen.I've tried setting the cdrom as the first bootable drive but this does not do the trick.my pins are correct on my 160 gig drive. I don't know what else to do.

Details & reason below:I've formatted the hard drive on a a friends emachine (by putting the HD into my machine) due to mess with viruses etc.Put HD back into e machine and tried to install XP from an OEM XP CD (genuine windows) - it boots and starts install, copying files to the hard drive fine but when it reboots it doesn't continue the install, but just goes back to the start, wanting to copy the files again.So what I'm going to do is put the HD back in my machine, copy the XP CD to a partition on the HD and then put it back in the machine, boot from HD and install XP all from HD. Question is- how do I get it to boot from the hard drive and start the install?I don't have a floppy boot disk or a floppy drive on my machine to make floppy boot disk. I can set the machine to boot from the HD 1st, that's no problem, just don't know how to set up the HD to let it boot from that so I can run the windows install which will be on the partition on the HD.

I have set up CD as boot drive, and installed the XP Pro disc. It immediately puts message "Setup is inspecting your hardware configuration..." and then just sits there doing nothing. I have left it for a long time so far but nothing is happening. This is repeatable. Do I need to do something different eg load drivers from a floppy or is there a problem with my hardward set up?

I get to the part where the screen is supposed to offer repair.My screen comes up showing partitions on the drive.It also says unknown disk but it lists the c: drive with 76246 MB and two other partitions.It just gives me the option to setup windows xp on the selected item or to select a different partition or delete a partition.I'm not getting the screen shown in the sticky.When i hit enter on the large partition it warned about installing two Operating System on the drive.Afraid to go farther,hoping I can save the files on the hard drive.

The hard drive was the boot disk and the computer I am installing it on has it's own boot disk. If I boot up with two boot disks will there be a problem? Is there anything I need to take into account before doing this? I am planning on installing the old HD onto an ATA cable that I unplugged from the DVD drive. The HD that is in this system is not on an ATA cable, I'm not sure what it is connected to, just a small plug with a blue cable going to the mother board.

I hate Vista. I'm installing XP.
I have a SATA drive. I don't have a floppy drive.
I believe I can do it in the BIOS.
I've changed the HD setting in the BIOS from SATA to ATA (my only choice). XP installs fine. But now I need to change it back to SATA. I do that, restart and I get the blue screen with an automatic restart. I'm sure I need to add the SATA drivers somewhere, but I'm not sure where or how.
My Maxtor External Drive became corrupted and I needed to re-format the drive. Unfortunately, while Working in Windows XP I accidentally deleted the partition and the drive. Now I can't get Windows XP to recognize the Maxtor Drive. I tried re-booting the PC and plugging in the Maxtor USB Cable, but this did not work. The Maxtor Drive was my H: Drive. Can get Windows to recognize my Maxtor Drive? When I deleted the drive I was working in the "Computer Management" Screen. I navigated to this screen through the following path: Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management.

I've looked up stuff like slipstreaming SATA drivers into the windows disc, but I don't think I'm doing it right. I got the correct SATA drivers from gateways website. I need to do an XP repair install on my Dell Dimension 8400 to fix several programs that no longer work (Update being the biggest problem). I had used this Forum a couple of months ago and doing the repair install was the recommended solution. I have a copy of the michaelstevenstech.com directions so I know what to do.
