Details & reason below:I've formatted the hard drive on a a friends emachine (by putting the HD into my machine) due to mess with viruses etc.Put HD back into e machine and tried to install XP from an OEM XP CD (genuine windows) - it boots and starts install, copying files to the hard drive fine but when it reboots it doesn't continue the install, but just goes back to the start, wanting to copy the files again.So what I'm going to do is put the HD back in my machine, copy the XP CD to a partition on the HD and then put it back in the machine, boot from HD and install XP all from HD. Question is- how do I get it to boot from the hard drive and start the install?I don't have a floppy boot disk or a floppy drive on my machine to make floppy boot disk. I can set the machine to boot from the HD 1st, that's no problem, just don't know how to set up the HD to let it boot from that so I can run the windows install which will be on the partition on the HD.

Back to my system, connected the HDD and turn it on, but when the XP logo appears, the system reboots, and it happened every time i tried it.

I need to do an XP repair install on my Dell Dimension 8400 to fix several programs that no longer work (Update being the biggest problem). 1. Used the XP Pro CD, but after it loads the XP tools, I get a BSOD saying can't continue, check for viruses & rund Scandisk.
2. Went to My Computer/disk management, left click on drive I want formatted, but "format" is grayed out.
3. Ran Kaspersky internet security 2009 and eliminated any malware detected plus ran scandisk with no consequences.
4. Tried 1 & 2 again with the same results.
Today i bought a new cam and i used the CD the came with it and installed the drivers and everything looked fine . i plugged the camera usb cable and went to launch the camera application and as soon as i clicked on it twice i found my self looking at the dreaded BSOD with this message: IRQL Not Less or Equal STOP x0000000A (0x00000000,0x0000001C,0x804E1BF8. then i went online and downloaded the most recent driver package for the camera but the problem stayed.

I had downloaded one version of linux and was able to see the files on the internal hard drive, but was unable to copy them to a memory stick or external hard drive. Now I've downloaded ubuntu and booted off a memory stick... this time, it's telling me that the internal hard drive has all kinds of bad sectors and won't let me access any of the files on there.

I can see the old hard drive in the E drive and it appears that all the contents are there by the size of the hard drive (same as when I had it in the old laptop) but I can only see, actually view, a very small percentage of the drive.

well i have the new hard drive in and started up the machine and changed the bott options to run from the dvd and all went fine until i should press the ENTER ( return ) button to install XP now . as soon as i did that the next window said no hard drive found . this was also happening on the old hard drive that was in the machine .
I'm running Windows XP with all the latest updates on a Dell XPS 410. My on-board DVD drive is an HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GSA-H31N. Whenever I try to load a disk in the drive, it crashes. Insert, hum, crash. BSOD. Also, if there's a disk in the drive, the computer will go into a BSOD before it can boot. I have a few suspicions about Alcohol 120% causing this, but I've tried uninstalling it, and that hasn't fixed the problem. I also uninstalled several other programs (MagicISO, IsoBuster, PowerISO) and not seeing the problem change. DVDIdle might, I guess, be another possible culprit, though I don't know. I would think the fact that I can crash before even making it to the startup screen disqualifies a certain amount of software. But if you think I should go ahead and uninstall a bunch of things again, I will. I've tried flashing the firmware. It hasn't helped. I can't seem to find any new drivers for it. I've tried googling and such, but I haven't found a solution there either. This one really has me stuck.

My wife has an old XP computer I want to buy her a new one but she doesn't like the vista and she wants to keep the old xp operating system. What I want to do is take the old hard drive and put it in the new computer as the master and take the new hard drive and put it in as the slave erasing the vista off it. Then using the master slave way can I transfer the xp operating system and all her files and data from the old hard drive to the new one.

I tried the repair command and it wouldn't work, so I decided to save the files and reformat the hard drive).I plugged the hard drive into a working computer and pulled all the documents off of it (VERY slowly) onto an external hard drive.
Every once in awhile I wouldn't be able to pull a picture or document off because of a cyclic redundancy check error. I just moved on and saved what I could. I assumed it was because the hard drive was already bad so I just moved what I could.
