View 7 Replies View Relatedonly 1 user, 33 processes, ewido and adaware SE scanned free -- but simply opening a word doc made the system hang over and over. Found I could open and print by running Word and opening the files from the 'open file menu' -- did this 12 times, fine. But try to double-click the same file that just printed -- hangs (and same for other files e.g. image files). the Folder showed on two lines in TaskManager Applications ''Not responding'' and no other applications; I did try cleaning registry ist time ever in nearly 4yo computer, restart seemed fine. But still hung on any particular file even with other applications (ie not just Word). Defragged but no better. Then thought of ChkDsk....It asked for restart to access certain windows files......now I canot tell whether CHKDSK is doing something or its just stuck in failing to boot.

Details & reason below:I've formatted the hard drive on a a friends emachine (by putting the HD into my machine) due to mess with viruses etc.Put HD back into e machine and tried to install XP from an OEM XP CD (genuine windows) - it boots and starts install, copying files to the hard drive fine but when it reboots it doesn't continue the install, but just goes back to the start, wanting to copy the files again.So what I'm going to do is put the HD back in my machine, copy the XP CD to a partition on the HD and then put it back in the machine, boot from HD and install XP all from HD. Question is- how do I get it to boot from the hard drive and start the install?I don't have a floppy boot disk or a floppy drive on my machine to make floppy boot disk. I can set the machine to boot from the HD 1st, that's no problem, just don't know how to set up the HD to let it boot from that so I can run the windows install which will be on the partition on the HD.

After powering it it up it seems like it does not recognize that the hard drive is there so XP does not boot. No error message. It brings up a Boot Device menu screen with the options to boot from Floppy (does not have one), HardDisk (does not work), CD-ROM or PXE. Choosing HardDisk does not work.
In the BIOS screen the hard disk has the status: "Disable" and there does not seem to be a way to change that. In the BIOS boot sequence the hard disk appears as it should. I've tried reordering the sequence but it makes no difference
Every 3-4days my computer would freeze up while booting up at windows XP screen and scroll bars would freeze.What bohers me about this is i am sure what could be causing this. I use avg as my antivirus,and run A2, spybot,regcleaner, tweaknow on a weekly basis. I keep my system really clean, so now i am wondering is it my HD. PC: Win XP-PRO, 800MHZ AMD Athlon, 1024mb,80gHD. I did what cleaning i could in safemode, it still freeze on scroll bars. I tried last good config, result is the same. The last time i got pass the freezing was by doing a restore.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI didn't open any suspicious emails, shared on P2P networks and certainly made no changes in system files. Only thing I did was what I do periodically. I defragged my hard drive, uninstalled games and went into msconfig and stopped 3 programs from start up (DEAMON tools, PowerISO and SQL service) I was also having problems with the SpyCop package so I uninstalled and reinstalled.
So I restarted (like I should) and the only process it goes through is the DELL start up "splash screen" After that it usually does the Windows XP "splash screen" but it never does the Windows XP screen, it just stays black, nothing. I pressed F2 to see if anything changed and nothing seemed to, as far as I know. I tried F8 to enter safe mode and a couple lines of text show up and stop and hang. I even tried to let it sit there to see if maybe it's just getting used to the defrag job(s) I did, still black. It's still black as I type this.
I had a two seperate versions of windows installed on two seperate hard drives, when i turn the computer on it asks me which one i want to boot from. well the second hard drive is now dying and somtimes it tells me DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT BOOT DISK AND PRESS ENTER. now this only happends when the second hard drive doesnt work. I have tried to just unplug the second drive to see if it would boot off of the original copy on the first drive but i get the same thing.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a Compaq Presario 900 which doesn't have a working CDrom drive.I took my harddrive out and put it in my friends Dell Inspiron B130 and installed Windows xp SP2. Now that all works fine but(there is always a but ....) when I tried to put the harddrive back into my laptop(Presario 900) Windows will not boot, even if I go to safemode first thing. I thought maybe I could install Windows from the USB port but my BIOS doesn't have a BOOT FROM USB option. Also there is no Bios update that will give me that option.I have tried deleting and installing all the drivers for the Presario then trying to boot like that but it still gets stuck.

When I start up, the device info is supposed to say something like:"Maxtor 2B020H1" but instead I get "Maxtor eph7 hgnk78l" note: the odd device name isnt exact, but I could write it down and post it if it helps.This all happened when I unplugged the ribbon cable from my m/b. -dont ask- lolWhen I plugged it back in I got that message.I have confirmed it is the hard drive itself, by trying it in a different computer.My second problem is, that was my primary master hard drive. View 3 Replies View RelatedI have Windows 7 installed on my new computer, but my firewire audio card and also some software wouldn't work properly with it, so I put my old hard drive with Windows XP installed on it into my new computer. I can boot up Windows XP from the second hard drive at the bios screen bit, but when it gets to the log in screen, the mouse and keyboard will not respond. I have tried multiple mice and keyboards including the old school style non-USB keyboard. The keyboard works fine to press F12 to get into the boot menu etc but then just stops working completely when XP is loaded. I assume its some kind of driver issue or something like that but I'm pretty useless with computers and I have no idea how I can get my mouse and keyboard to respond in XP .

The problem I have is my father inlaw lost his C.O.A of his tower somewhere between his house, his car and my house, (about 60 miles).I can't boot from his hard drive, however I can 'browse/access' it. I've tried a couple of 'retrieve windows key' programs, which work...on my P.C! I have my key tho! I tried installing one into his hard drive but kept finding my key. Is there a command from 'DOS prompt' or some other measure I can take to recover his serial key?

Then there is an extended partition at 5gb in size, which contains windows xp installation files. What I did was take my windows xp cd, make an ISO, and then extracted the iso and put the files into the extended partition of my external usb hard drive.The computer I want to install to has a cd drive that is not working and thus i cannot install windows xp from a cd. The BIOS of the computer DOES support booting from a USB device.I have partition magic software and have used it to create the 5gb extended partition on the usb external drive. However, I don't know how to configure anything so that it will acutally know to boot from this partition and what files to use to start the installation.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy computer has given me problems from day 1. Currently, it fails to recognize my E drive. When rebooting, a black screen appears that says "Secondary drive 1 not found." When restring to an earlier date, a screen says that the E drive cannot be restored because it is either turned off or disabled. The harddrive light which usaully flickers when the computer is working now stays on all the time.

Don't know what found it's way into my PC last night but I was suddenly hit with the BSOD showing the following error:

Normal reboot results in the same screen and trying to boot up into sfae mode just returns me to the setup (F8) screen. So, I figured on a repair for which I've managed to get hold of an XP disc from my mother of all people.
So far I have, based on what I have found from searching the net, via the Recovery Console on the disc I have:
run chkdsk /r
followed by a reboot - no change
COPY D:i386NTLDR C:
COPY D:i386NTDETECT.COM C:
FIXBOOT
followed by a reboot - no change
FIXMBR (yes to proceed)
followed by a reboot -- no change
bootcfg /rebuild

Those procedures sounded pretty safe to me and I don't think I've damaged my PC any further but ...
I have a strange problem which I can't seem to rectify, I've searched around but can't find a solution. I have a Dell Demension 8400, it has 1GB RAM installed, an 80GB C: drive and I have a 250GB external USB drive (which I use for back-up, I store pictures music etc there) and I'm running Windows XP PRO with SP3+ all fixes installed.
he problem is I can NOT boot info safe mode. (I can boot normally though no problem). When I tap F8 key, I get the safe mode choices just fine (just safe mode or safe mode with networking etc) when I make a choice it starts to load then I get a BSOD with the following message/information
A problem has been detected and windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to the computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen (it's NOT it happens every safe mode boot no matter if I choose just safe mode or save mode with networking etc.)restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check for Viruses on your computer (I do always have Avira's AntiVir running and fully updated, I ran Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, and spybot search & destroy). Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers (no new hard drives or controllers). Check your hard drive to make sure it is configured and terminated (I assume it's working I can boot into windows fine normally just NOT in safe mode). Run CHKDSK /F (I did that no problems detected) to check for hard drive corruption and then restart your computer. (the problem of course still exists)

I'm not 100% sure what to do, I really don't want to format & reinstall Windows from scratch because I have so many "things" which I use alot that I'd not want to try to replace.
Using safe mode isn't 100% essential, but there have been times in the past I needed it to remove a malware that could not be removed in normal mode.
After Booting XP I get the blue screen with this message C0000221 {Bad image checksum} The image msvcrt.dll is possibly corrupt.The header checksum does not match the computed checksum

View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded the hard drive on my computer from a 5200rpm drive to a much needed 7200 80gig maxtor. When I start up the computer and click my user name, windows xp professional logs me in and the first item to load is my norton (with an exclamation point). none of my other tasks in the toolbar load and the computer is kind of paused. i timed it to last 45 seconds. and then suddenly the screen refreshes/all my tasks load. I cant seem to figure out why there is such a pause. The only start up items I am allowing (via msconfig) are for the anti virus software and a dialer for my verizon dsl connection
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am priarily a Mac user, I do grahic & web design etc. I recently bought a cheap older PC to use for validating my work on the Windows platform. The computer came with 98, I need XP on it. I got XP installed (had to change the hard drive ribbon to an 80 wire ribbon) but now when it starts up, it freezes up after a few seconds. Before opening IE or doing anything. The computer has 64 MB RAM, which I would be upgrading if I thought this computer is worth putting any $$ at all into - 64 is supposed to meet the minimum requirements for XP so although I expect it to be molasses slow I do expect it to run the system software. I have it hooked up to a Samsung LCD screen (onboard graphics card - Compaq board) and Windows keyboard and USB mouse.
Also, the computer ran fine under 98 (tested it for a bit when I got it, and previous owner is a friend who swears there were no problems under 98). I don't get blue screen or anything, computer just totally freezes and doesn't respond. When I restart it goes through proper verification and then starts up, freezes again. So, I have no idea wher to start - hardware issue? Software issue?
I have a lot of games on my c drive, i would like to move them to my external drive and be able to start from windows desktop. I am not sure how to associate the programs to start from the desktop because the games were automaticly installed into c drive

before windows actually starts. But everytime I do it, I either hit it too soon and land up being asked which boot device I want, or it's too late and Windows has already started Is there another method of booting into safe mode other than trying to hit f8 at the "exact right moment"?
I am running a PC clone, Win XP SP3. It is using a wired connection to a router. Yesterday, out of no where, I lost connection to the internet. No browsers, Trillian, nothing that uses the internet works. I tried running a virus scan, malware scan and found nothing. I tried doing a system restore and it seemed to work, for a brief moment I had the internet again. Then, once more, it stopped working.
Right now, the current speculation is that the onboard network connection is dying. What I'm trying to find out, is if that is possible or not. I'm not worried about having to buy a card - they're cheap. I am worried about buying a new card and it not fixing the problem.Are there other things that can cause this to happen that I can/should look into first?
I've got a Dell Dimension 4550 running windows XP w/ SP2 and ALL the latest patches here in my shop, and I've got the weirdest problem. I wanna sweep it clean of viruses and spyware, but can't boot to safe mode. It boots completely fine in normal mode, no errors or anything. View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell computer where one of the loading .dll files came up 'missing' one day, so it won't boot. I want to get all the photos and other docs off the hard drive. I had downloaded one version of linux and was able to see the files on the internal hard drive, but was unable to copy them to a memory stick or external hard drive. Now I've downloaded ubuntu and booted off a memory stick... this time, it's telling me that the internal hard drive has all kinds of bad sectors and won't let me access any of the files on there.
