Installing Drivers With UBUNTU
Apr 29, 2006
My computer recently crashed, and I am going to put ubuntu as my operating system rather than windows. When I got my computer, I had to reinstall the driver for the wireless card. Will I have to do that? If so how, and where do I find the driver? I have a driver recovery cd that came with my computer, however I don't know if that will work with anything besides windows.

Alright, here?s my deal (I hope ya?ll can help..):The Bottom-Line (Short-Version): I bought a couple PC?s with Ubuntu (Linux) installed. I need XP on it. My XP Install disc doesn?t work (error pops up), if I tried to partition the drive, I?ll mess it up for sure; what the hell do I do?What I?ve Done (Detailed-Version): I recently bought a couple computers (Dell Optiple X GX150) that originally had the XP OS on it; currently, Ubuntu (Linux) resides as the OS (which is a bad thing, in this case).I would like to uninstall/delete ?Ubuntu? and put ?Windows XP? (or any other version for this matter) as my main & ONLY operating system. I have a ?Windows XP Installation Disc? that I TRIED to use and install. I downloaded ?Wine? & ?Crossover?, each opens the .EXE on the disc and allows me to explore. In ?Setup?, it asks: ?What do you want to do?? When I click, ?Install Windows XP?,

It might sound rather strange, but I need to install Win XP Pro over Linux Ubuntu. I plan on setting-up a dual-boot, but I need Windows to be installed first. When I try to boot from the Win XP Pro install CD (not OEM version, but complete Windows OS), I boot to Ubuntu. How can I launch the Win install and overwrite Ubuntu? Should I use http://dban.sourceforge.net/ to erase Ubuntu and then install Windows?

Whenever i install drivers on my pc, (i've tried graphics card drivers and wireless network card drivers) my pc stops working. When i installed the graphics card drivers, i tried testing the graphics on a game (counter-strike) but as soon as i got into the game, the pc flashes a blue screen, and reboots. I cant see what the blue screen says because it flashes on and off again to quick for me to read it. I decided to uninstall the graphics card drivers, and the game worked perfectly, but the graphics were REALLY bad. So i thought i might need to update some other drivers, so i tried to install my wireless network card, but when i finished installing the drivers when i had to restart my computer, it flashed the BSOD.... AGAIN! I need help urgently as im going to a LAN gaming comp called "rezidue" and its on in 2 weeks, i need my pc fixed by then! All these problems started when i upgraded my CPU. Everything was running smooth, and i was happily playing along on my computer, when i was asked what my FPS was in counter-strike, and i was all "mine are 65!" and there like "wow that sucks, mines 130" so i set out on my epic quest to get better FPS then everyone else and MAN THAT WAS A MISTAKE. I upgraded from my celeron 2.8ghz cpu to a P4 3.0ghz HT cpu, and thats when things started messing up on me. My entire system is as follows (incase it can help someone help me) P4 3.0ghz HT CPU, Microstar P4 motherboard, 128mb Nvidia Geforce mx4000 AGP x8 graphics card, 256MB ddr ram (recently brought new 1GB ddr ram off ebay just for rezidue! should be here soon!) TP-LINK 54mbps wireless network card) And last but not least

I re-formated my sisters computer yesterday, and after installing it i had no internet. As i hadn't installed any drivers yet, i understood that. But after heading over to dell's site, downloading all of the drivers for her computer and then installing them, i STILL do not have any internet. I don't see any connections on the computer either, it's just blank!

I'm trying to set up a dual-boot with Ubuntu and XP64. Initially I just had Ubuntu on my one sata hdd and XP on an ide hdd. I decided it'd be better running XP on the sata drive too, so I resized my linux partition with gparter, and created a new NTFS partition. The problem is, when I try to install XP onto the drive, it cannot seem to see the sata drive. Nothing was listed at all except the ide drives and my usb drive.I did some looking and found the 64 bit sata drivers for my motherboard, managed to load them onto a floppy and load them into the XP setup. This was all fine again until the time to select a partition, where it seemed to list the drive, but only shows 'Unknown disk' 'There is no disk in the drive'.I tried deleting the partition I made with gparter to see if XP could at least see the 'unallocated space' but to no avail.I even tried making a boot disk in nLite with the sata drivers, but it made no difference (not really surprisingly). If I try to use the 32 bit drivers that came with my mobo, it won't let me install XP.I'm all out of ideas to why it won't work.

I posted here in February '08 about a downgrade from Vista Home Basic to XP Home, and received good information on finding the necessary drivers at the Acer website.
I got XP on the Acer up and running, Internet access, etc. all appeared fine. I am now adding speakers and unable to get sound. I viewed Device Manager and found to my surprise that I've got question marks next to Display Adapter >Video Controller and Other Devices > PCI Device. Interestingly, Sound, Video and Game Controllers appears normal in Device Manager, but no sound card appears in the list (interesting since it is lack of sound that prompted me to check in the first place

I'm trying to get a new usb mouse to work on it, and I have the drivers for it - but when installing the 'new hardware', it reaches a point wherein it asks to insert the "Windows XP Home Edition CD-ROM", but I don't have one! It won't allow me to skip this, and if I click cancel, the mouse isn't installed, and an error window appears saying that an error occured during the new hardware's installation.

My computer came preinstalled with a whole bunch of HP garbage I didn't want.. So I bought a copy of WINxp pro and tried to install.. Upon doing this It couldn't read my hard drive, which I later determined was due to the fact it is a SATA hard drive and the XP install cd doesnt have the drivers for it. Solution was, I changed a setting in my computer's BIOS to change the raid mode to IDE instead of SATA, then the install proccess went fine. Problem is now I have to keep it at IDE, and if I turn it back to SATA the computer retstarts after the Starting Windows screen with the Windows icon, I assume this is due to the fact that Windows didn't bother installing any SATA drivers since I installed in IDE mode... Could somone please point me in the right direction as to what I need to install/configure to allow WIN to boot up with my BIOS using SATA mode?

my friend give me his Gateway 610XL all in one PC to fix a few problems. one of them was internet explorer not showing up when called for, that was an easy fix; however, this next problem has to do with USB devices and it's giving me a bit of trouble. basically, any USB devices i connect to it, windows doesn't auto install or even try to auto install the drivers. no matter what i connect to it (mouse, keyboard, thumb drive). i can go into device manager and install the drivers manually just fine but i would like to fix the auto install feature for my friend cuz he's not that good with computers. i checked and made sure the following services are enabled:
plug and play
upnp
user mode driver framework
shell hardware detection
the problem persist even in safe mode. one thing i noticed is when i go to control panel and then hit add hardware, i get a message that says this: "you can only install one device at a time. when the other device installation is complete, try this wizard again" (some where along those lines). i get that message even with nothing connected to the USB ports. i'm guessing what ever this "other device" is, it hanging up pnp so how do i go about aborting that installation? i don't really see anything in the task bar that even suggest a driver installation is on the way. this is running Windows XP Media Center Edition SP3 by that way.

I particularly need the USB driver listed under Other Devices, because my internet connection is through USB.

I recently put XP on a Compaq Presario C700 CTO that came preinstalled with Vista. I had to change some things in th Bios for Xp to install and now I need some drivers. Nothing is supported. I received links for various drivers someone told me i needed but none of them worked partly because i wasn't sure how to install them as the instructions were useless. The drivers I'm missing are Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus, Ethernet Controller, Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus, Sm Bus Controller, Video Controller, Video Controller (VGA Compatible), and one Unknown device which I think is my wireless (Atheros 06X Wireless Network Adapter). Any help as to how I can get these drivers installed and get XP working would be greatly appreciated.

I recently baught a used machine that came with a working clean cut legal copy of Windows XP. Needless to say I was thrilled, but I machine to use as a Linux file server, but this Windows XP installation was too valuable for me to simply discard. I took out the hard drive and placed it another computer. The computer boots windows XP, then 2 seconds later it blue screens and reboots (much too quickly for me to read the error message)
I'm thinking here, the obvious problem is that I took a Windows XP installation and changed all the hardware on it and it didn't have the drivers for it. I attempted to run the recovery console from a Windows XP installation disc and it asked me for the administrator password. The drivers are on the XP disc somewhere, I would like to know how to install them manually (using a Linux boot disc to move files from the XP installation disc to the hard drive)

For some reason Windows keeps telling me that ALL drivers i install aren't "Windows Logo verified" and asks me if i wanna procceed or not, while this might seem normal i know that its not, becouse drivers that i used to install with no problems now this happens. Also i have LOTS ( and i really mean LOTS ) of "Found new hardware what action do you want to take" dialogs during an hardware instalation when this also didn't used to happen before. For example i just installed my X-Fi Sound Card, before it would install with no prompts what so ever, now when i'm installing it i had about 15 prompts telling me that it found new hardware and i had to choose "Find drivers automaticly", and after i did that i would get the "Driver is not Windows Logo Verified" prompt. It all seems to work fine eitherway if i just choose "continue" with the prompts, however this is becoming quite annoying since it happens for every driver i install.

I am preparing a disk for a Windows Recovery. Let's assume you use a Rescue boot disk after a disk crash. Which basic drivers load on a Windows Install or boot disk? I know it allows the CD Drive and a floppy drive. Does it also allow a USB drive, or particular USB ports (front, back)?

I've recently just bought xp prof ed for my laptop which runs me but the problem is it won't recognise my pc card (nic) that i bought recently. Why is this as i've installed the drivers i got with it. Is it because the copy didn't come with the laptop so it doesn't even know i have a pcmcia slot? If so how can i get round it? I've looked on sony vaio site for related xp drivers but as far as i can see there are none for pcmcia slot

basically i got this very old and cheap brandless webcam, it came with a mini-cdr which holds the drivers, when i place the mini-cdr into my dvd drive, it made a load ###scccrreeeaaaccchhhing### noise, then the installer runs and i got the error shown in the top of the pic, as i continue the installation i got another error, shown at the botton of the pic, now i know maybe the disc is corroupt or something, so i decided to use device manager to install the drivers manually.
when windows did found the driver on the disc, it turns out to be a notepad file, which was strange, but i continue to install anyway, but windows pops up a message saying the driver isn't signed or could be harmful or something like that, i cancel the installation and uplugs the camera. i thought it made sense since the mini-cdr could actually be a coaster or a badly burnt disc, as the installer states there's an error, but should i try anyways? i was thinking if i click yes when device manager ask me and continue to manually install the drivers would i damage my pc? when i place the mini-cdr in my dvd drive, it made a very load screeeeaachhhing noises, did the disc damage the lens or the drive?

I'm in a bit of a pickle, I was installing some beta drivers from nvidia on my gaming desktop just for fun, but when I restarted the computer can't run for more then 3 minutes until it crashes, so I need to go back and reverse the drivers i installed or get rid of them. The dilemma here is that I'm not exactly sure what I need to do, nor can I BOOT INTO SAFE MODE, which has been an issue for me for about a year now. Whenever I begin to login in safe mode the computer abruptly restarts before it even reaches the desktop

Trying to get the Photosmart C6280 drivers to install for the past few days. Whether it's installing from the CD or downloaded drivers, I still get the same message. Right before it starts to install the drivers, it says that some files need to be deleted and that I have to restart. So, I restart, and the installer comes back up, only to tell me to restart again. I got past this when I ran the installer in safe mode, but I was unable to start the Print Spooler to continue the setup.
