I have a refurbished IBM T40 laptop. I don't remember dropping it, but each time I move slightly if I am not working on a hard surface, the system freezes with a bunch of multi colored lines. Sometimes vertical or horizontal or mixed.

Today I installed Norton SystemWorks Premier 2005 without ant noted problem. I then installed Norton Internet Security 2005 and during the installation it detected that a previous version of Norton AntiVirus was installed and requested that it be removed. I did that and followed the correct steps. And rebooted. I then installed Norton Internet Security with AntiVirus without any noted problem. I was requested to download Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 and I did and then I was requested to install Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 HotFix (KB886903

View 4 Replies View RelatedGot a second hand Dell CPx P3, 650mhz, Win2000, 256 ram,20g hd...the laptop runs great and i really like it *EXCEPT - SIGH* ...i edit ALOT of photos using photoshop (which i have not loaded yet).As it turns out that my problem is the screen, even at the startup has yellowing lines running horizontally to the right of all visible icons, words, pictures etc. I put a photo cd into the drive and the pictures are very distorted, it looks as if they have been totally over sharpened.
View 8 Replies View RelatedAfter my computer starts there is this buzzing sound that continues. It didn't happen when I got the computer. This buzzing sound keeps continuing.When I play games and some minutes into the game computer starts to slow down and it starts to freeze.Then I try to alt tab or all the shortcuts control alt delete. Doesn't work. I also see tiny little grey lines around my mouse, I can move my mouse but everything else has frozen. I then have to restart computer. When I restarted my computer there was like little blue lines going down my screen not many only 3 or 4 or something.
The blue lines happen when it goes to the loading screen where it says windows is loading and has a blue bar that goes across. It also has a few blue dots near the bar that goes across. When that loading is finished nothing appears on my screen it is just black. Just now I turned off my computer for a while hoping that it was just a heating problem. I turned it back on and it works I just have the buzzing sound.
I have an old - 6 yrs old (no-name) PC running Windows Xp (upgraded from 98). Recently I had to erase and reload everything on my computer - including XP - so now I only have some basic programs from established vendors (MSFT office, Norton, Adobe and SBC yahoo DSL). Since I did all of this, now while I am on the internet, my computer will all of a sudden freeze and the screen will become one color (not the typical blue screen but usually the background color of the page I was just viewing) with some vertical lines. At this point nothing works, so I have to reboot the computer.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi recently bought an acer laptop with windows media center installed by the company along with many other programs id like to get rid of. i have a copy of windows xp professional (32bit?). i first go into bios and change it to boot from cd first. i save and exit, my laptop reboots, after the bios screen, the screen goes black with one of those mini white lines you see in cmd.exe when your typing, on the top left corner for around 10 seconds. it then proceeds to the windows xp loading screen. it totally skips the boot from cd (windows cd). the model of my laptop is AMD turion 64x2 mobile technology TL-52. im not sure if 64x2 means that my laptop is 64bit, and my windows xp professional cd is only 32bit?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm on my computer for 10 hours a day monday through friday. About twice a day my computer locks up and displays grey vertical lines on the screen and I can't do anything. It requires a hard power down and power up to get back up and going. Of course everything I haven't saved is lost. I've tried deleting and reloading the video driver and updating it, no help. Do I need to reload my OS? I hope the fix is not that drastic. Any and all information is appreciated. View 3 Replies View RelatedRecently I reinstalled the OS on my computer. It was shipped with Windows XP HE SP2, but I formatted and put Win98 onto the system. Needless to say, it froze up at the Windows splash screen. So, I uninstalled it and put XP back on. My question here is, is there any possible way to put Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows XP all on one hard drive, and it work? I know how to partition the hard drive accordingly for the deed, it's getting the computer to actually run 95, 98, and 3.1. I'm cheating fate here, since I know 3.1 probably won't run on my 32-bit structure system, but it's worth a try. My system is a Dell Dimension 4700 with 3.0 gHz CPU, 256 mb of RAM, and an nVidia 64 mb video card.

I have a Compaq Presario 715us laptop that I just added 256mb of ram.Since then the laptop freezes and the only way to get it back is to hold the power button.It will run from between five minutes and four hours before it freezes. If I remove the new Compaq ram all is well. It is the correct ram per Compaq. I've run looping diags on the ram and they all pass.
I've spent hours on the phone with the clueless folks at Compaq. I've called Kingston to see if they know of a problem, and they didn't. There are no logs associated. I've changed hard drives and reloaded xp with all the updates but it still locks up.I searched the web and found tons of posts on the HP busines forum site of people with many models of Compaq laptops freezing after adding ram. They used all different ram other than Compaq's. They were from three years ago. They found that if they removed xp patch Q811493 in sp1 it corrected the problem. They said that this patch was rolled into KB826939. I've searched for both of these on my laptop and found neither. I've checked add remove programs with show update checked and it isn't there. It may be in SP2 or it may not be related to this issue in my case.
It's about my Acer laptop (model 5672) with Windows XP Pro SP3.
The problem with the laptop is that he randomly freezes. It can happened each two days or each 5 minutes. It doesn�t matter what program I�m using. When he freezes, I need to turn him off by pushing the onbutton.
When I want to reboot he refuses. He powers on, but when he should be showing the white Acerlogo screen (splash screen?), before the booting of Windows, nothing happens and the screen stays black.
The only thing I can do is power him off and start over again. But when I power him off, I noticed that at the end, the dvdwriter makes a lot of noise.
Only after a while or a lot of trying (on and off pushing on the button) he boots.
The not appearance of the white Acerlogo screen (splash?) at the beginning of the boot process tells me this isn�t a software problem.
I also have to mention that he went back to the factory 3 times in 3 weeks. The first time the hdd was changed, second time the RAM memory was faulty. The third time, they said they "tested complete system=>system OK No trouble found".
how can i fix this problem?
an icon in the shape of a folder with what looks like the "gear" symbol is on my task bar. The "title" is that of the front page of my website. I have tried to remove the item, but when I either right or left click on it my laptop "freezes." Everything, including Task Manager, curser, the works. I have to shut down with the power on-off switch.

However, the problems in Red are still in existence)I have tried installing SP1, however every time I try, I get the "file atapi.sys is open or in use" message. I had Windows Live Update on, and it was downloading and installing Service Pack 3.
But almost at the end, the download got cut off on its own, even though my internet connection was still on, and the laptop froze. So i restarted it, and although now it says i have service pack 3, i seem to be having problems.
It doesn't install itself on startup, it only tries to installs, then it says i have an error somewhere.
I tried downloading it manually from both microsoft.com and from another website, it's a 316MB file, using Download Accelerator Plus. Both time it would reach to the end, tells me its 100%, but keeps downloading as if nothing happened. I end up reading: "325MB of 316MB" and stuff like that.
my laptop froze...i turned it off and thats here the problems began. long story short i had to replace my ram. i reinstalled xp and couldnt get online at all. i took it to the comp. repair place at my school and they told me 2 conflicting stories. they got my laptop able to connect to wireless but it blue screens after about a minute or 2. the screen flashes the blue screen but doesnt stay up and the laptop turns off. my power adapter doesnt charge the laptop unlessyou jiggle it and move it in a certain area...he said this makes things woese and is all due to the motherboard being fried. thing is this has happened before even when my laptop was working fine...i had to jiggle or move the adapter plug around until it held a charge. i have windows xp and my laptop bluescreens as i try to go online. is there a remedy to this.

View 11 Replies View RelatedI decided to "reinstall" Windows XP on my laptop. I stuck the reinstall disk into the computer and let it go. After about 1 hour of "reinstalling", the computer restarted, after that, the window was only one half the size and I couldn't change the monitor resolution size. (but, it showed the old desktop information so I knew right away that I hadn't actually reinstalled to the original state, but just reinstalled over the current desktop).
I restarted the computer to see if the window screen would enlarge to the full size. It did return to the full screen size, but Now, it freezes at the part of startup where the screen says "Windows is starting up". I left it on for 20 minutes and it was still frozen. SHould I insert the Windows XP disk again, to start over or what? Or click reboot after hitting the F2 button??
I got blue screen of death on my laptop and it keeps on restarting before the window can actually boot up. It show's this message and reboots every single time when starting up Windows XP. I tried recovering the windows from the Recovery CD but it goes to the Gateway Symbol n freezes there and I have to restart the system every single time and try to boot from the recovery CD. it goes searching for recovery date on the hard drive and if not found any it will boot the recovery cd. but it goes to this scan and just freezes there with running the recovery data from the cd.

Couldn't do Control-Alt-Delete, just had to press down power button for 10 seconds. I managed to get it to stay on long enough to copy my important files--it never locked up while I was copying files onto a CD, but almost always locked up immediately after I ejected the CD. Sometimes it would restart on its own rather than freezing up. Twice I saw a blue screen flash with some text on it, but it was too quick for me to see what error messages it had. I noticed also that it started saying that it had found new hardware on my computer and tried to install it. The new hardware that it said it found was: VIA OHCI IEEE 1394 Host Controller.I searched some forums for possible causes, and saw that someone had a similar problem and that their computer worked when the CD/DVD drive was in use--I've found that works for me too. It works totally fine as long as I have a DVD in the drive playing or on pause.

Very faint hint of white lines. almost like the old days with tvs and the horizontal hold being out of wack except this is very faint and the screen itself is not distorted. Just horizontal white lines that cascade down. Did the obligiatory check of the cables from the printer to the computer and nothing going on there. tried rebooting and no luck .I could make some guesses but if this is obvious to somebody i would appreciate any ideas.now for some strange reason after posting this i turned of the monitor and turned it back on and the lines are gone?

I noticed this after installing two Big FIsh demo games, playing a short time and uninstalling them. I think I have also cleaned out all files related to those two games from the registry. Then I rebooted. Now, everything on my desktop has white motion lines on the right side. It looks similar to dragging a box across the screen that leaves a trail. I have checked my monotor settings, nothing there helps. Not sure what else I should do next, but this DOES seem related to the games. I did get a screen shot if someone needs to see that.

I've been using English an Japanese on my PC and this never happened.I used the Microsoft Office 2003 Language Setting to "add" Japanese and it's been running fine. But today, all the sudden, the Language Tool Bar disappeared. Language Tool Bar = The bar appears automatically on the screen when you are using multi languages on the PC.If the Language Tool Bar is in inactive, it's restored on the Left-Bottom of the screen. Eng for English, Jp for Japanese. So I tried removing the settings and re-added, re-started, nothing happened. Also I tried Control Panel, Regions and Language Setting, added Japanese (it was already added), nothing happens.In fact, if I see the current settings, there are English and Japanese there! I tried Spybot and Ad-aware to see if any problem. Then re-started, result, same. Updated IE to 7.0, result, same.I didn't change any settings today, no new downloads or installations before this problem occurred.
