View 1 RepliesRecently I was playing a game when my computer froze up, when I restarted it, it froze every time on the Windows XP bootscreen. It boots fine in Safe mode with networking. (I'm typing this post on this computer)
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy computer was working fine this morning, I didn't download anything or do anything different, just normal web searching. As I'm loading a web page, the computer freezes. I Cntrl Alt Dlt and nothing, so I turn off my computer and turn in back on, it reboots to the Win screen where you sign in as an identity, I enter my password and it freezes. Again, I have to reboot the computer manually, and it freezes at the Compaq screen that comes on when you first turn on the computer. I turned off the comp, opened it, removed my fan, blew it out a bit, removed the processor and reseated it (in the process, reseated it incorrectly and bent a far corner prong, attempted to straighten w/tweezers, and ultimately BROKE it off...DOH!). I wasn't sure if the broken prong would have a big effect, so I reseated it correctly, reseated my memory, and tried again, same thing, just hangs at the Compaq screen

View 4 Replies View RelatedTrying to start my computer and it gets to the screen where it gives me 2 seconds to press F11 to start recovery. But after 2 seconds or pressing F11 or any key, another line appears saying the same thing "Press F11 to start recovery". Can't get past this point and start Windows. HD is recognized in another computer as well as in BIOS.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've recently purchased an HP G50 laptop, and decided to wipe off Vista and install XP - I did this with a few laptops before, no problem. However this laptop is proving to be a real headache. It won't boot from the Windows XP install CD at all The furthest I get is at the "Press any key to boot from CD" prompt, then the screen stays black. I booted without the hard drive to see if this was causing the issue, but the problem persisted. The CD had no problem booting on 4 other machines. I tried a different CD and that didn't make the problem go away. The laptop will boot any Linux install/live cd I shoot at it, yet it refuses to boot the Windows XP install CD.
View 8 Replies View RelatedSorry if this is a repeat. My Toshiba Satellite M45 running Win XP Home, SP2 is caught in a boot-up loop. It shows the Toshiba splash screen, the "Windows is starting up" screen, then flashes a blue screen with white characters (too fast for me to make out any detail), then the "Windows didn't startup properly" (I forget the precise wording) screen, with the choices of Safe Mode, etc. I've tried every option on the list, but it still fails, returning to the Boot Options screen. Mea Culpa: I haven't done a backup in quite some time, so I'm anxious about the data on the hard drive.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI need some help. I have a Compaq Presario 715us laptop that I just added 256mb of ram.Since then the laptop freezes and the only way to get it back is to hold the power button. It will run from between five minutes and four hours before it freezes. If I remove the new Compaq ram all is well. It is the correct ram per Compaq. I've run looping diags on the ram and they all pass.
I've spent hours on the phone with the clueless folks at Compaq. I've called Kingston to see if they know of a problem, and they didn't. There are no logs associated. I've changed hard drives and reloaded xp with all the updates but it still locks up.I searched the web and found tons of posts on the HP busines forum site of people with many models of Compaq laptops freezing after adding ram. They used all different ram other than Compaq's. They were from three years ago. They found that if they removed xp patch Q811493 in sp1 it corrected the problem. They said that this patch was rolled into KB826939. I've searched for both of these on my laptop and found neither. I've checked add remove programs with show update checked and it isn't there. It may be in SP2 or it may not be related to this issue in my case.
It's about my Acer laptop (model 5672) with Windows XP Pro SP3.
The problem with the laptop is that he randomly freezes. It can happened each two days or each 5 minutes. It doesnt matter what program Im using. When he freezes, I need to turn him off by pushing the onbutton.
When I want to reboot he refuses. He powers on, but when he should be showing the white Acerlogo screen (splash screen?), before the booting of Windows, nothing happens and the screen stays black.
The only thing I can do is power him off and start over again. But when I power him off, I noticed that at the end, the dvdwriter makes a lot of noise.
Only after a while or a lot of trying (on and off pushing on the button) he boots.
The not appearance of the white Acerlogo screen (splash?) at the beginning of the boot process tells me this isnt a software problem.
I also have to mention that he went back to the factory 3 times in 3 weeks. The first time the hdd was changed, second time the RAM memory was faulty. The third time, they said they "tested complete system=>system OK No trouble found".
how can i fix this problem?
an icon in the shape of a folder with what looks like the "gear" symbol is on my task bar. The "title" is that of the front page of my website. I have tried to remove the item, but when I either right or left click on it my laptop "freezes." Everything, including Task Manager, curser, the works. I have to shut down with the power on-off switch.
This is for my LAPTOP,which is separate from my DESKTOP problem I am having. With everything I'm going thru with my desktop, I am wanting to make sure my laptop is in working order, cause if it goes down, I'm screwed. So in following the directions I have been given to check things on my desktop, I've also done so with my laptop.(Note: The SP1 problem has been fixed. However, the problems in Red are still in existence)I have tried installing SP1, however every time I try, I get the "file atapi.sys is open or in use" message. I have even booted into safe mode and got the same error.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI had Windows Live Update on, and it was downloading and installing Service Pack 3.
But almost at the end, the download got cut off on its own, even though my internet connection was still on, and the laptop froze. So i restarted it, and although now it says i have service pack 3, i seem to be having problems.
It doesn't install itself on startup, it only tries to installs, then it says i have an error somewhere.
I tried downloading it manually from both microsoft.com and from another website, it's a 316MB file, using Download Accelerator Plus. Both time it would reach to the end, tells me its 100%, but keeps downloading as if nothing happened. I end up reading: "325MB of 316MB" and stuff like that.
my laptop froze...i turned it off and thats here the problems began. long story short i had to replace my ram. i reinstalled xp and couldnt get online at all. i took it to the comp. repair place at my school and they told me 2 conflicting stories. they got my laptop able to connect to wireless but it blue screens after about a minute or 2. the screen flashes the blue screen but doesnt stay up and the laptop turns off. my power adapter doesnt charge the laptop unlessyou jiggle it and move it in a certain area...he said this makes things woese and is all due to the motherboard being fried. thing is this has happened before even when my laptop was working fine...i had to jiggle or move the adapter plug around until it held a charge. i have windows xp and my laptop bluescreens as i try to go online. is there a remedy to this.

View 11 Replies View RelatedI decided to "reinstall" Windows XP on my laptop. I stuck the reinstall disk into the computer and let it go. After about 1 hour of "reinstalling", the computer restarted, after that, the window was only one half the size and I couldn't change the monitor resolution size. (but, it showed the old desktop information so I knew right away that I hadn't actually reinstalled to the original state, but just reinstalled over the current desktop).
I restarted the computer to see if the window screen would enlarge to the full size. It did return to the full screen size, but Now, it freezes at the part of startup where the screen says "Windows is starting up". I left it on for 20 minutes and it was still frozen. SHould I insert the Windows XP disk again, to start over or what? Or click reboot after hitting the F2 button??
I have a refurbished IBM T40 laptop. I don't remember dropping it, but each time I move slightly if I am not working on a hard surface, the system freezes with a bunch of multi colored lines. Sometimes vertical or horizontal or mixed.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI got blue screen of death on my laptop and it keeps on restarting before the window can actually boot up. It show's this message and reboots every single time when starting up Windows XP. I tried recovering the windows from the Recovery CD but it goes to the Gateway Symbol n freezes there and I have to restart the system every single time and try to boot from the recovery CD. it goes searching for recovery date on the hard drive and if not found any it will boot the recovery cd. but it goes to this scan and just freezes there with running the recovery data from the cd.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy computer:Toshiba Satellite M35X-S32980GB Hard Drive 480MB RAM Windows XP About a week ago, my laptop started freezing up a few minutes after I turned it on. Couldn't do Control-Alt-Delete, just had to press down power button for 10 seconds. I managed to get it to stay on long enough to copy my important files--it never locked up while I was copying files onto a CD, but almost always locked up immediately after I ejected the CD. Sometimes it would restart on its own rather than freezing up. Twice I saw a blue screen flash with some text on it, but it was too quick for me to see what error messages it had. I noticed also that it started saying that it had found new hardware on my computer and tried to install it. The new hardware that it said it found was: VIA OHCI IEEE 1394 Host Controller.I searched some forums for possible causes, and saw that someone had a similar problem and that their computer worked when the CD/DVD drive was in use--I've found that works for me too. It works totally fine as long as I have a DVD in the drive playing or on pause.

View 18 Replies View RelatedI have a HP ze5568cl laptop (Windows XP SP2). For a few years we've had trouble with the power connector. We've just wiggled the power cable to keep it connected and lived with the problem. It also gets very hot and the fan runs constantly. Yesterday when I powered it on there was no power, absolutely nothing. My husband has some electronic knowledge so we took the laptop apart and he soldered the loose part of the power connector. While he was doing that I cleaned the fan (couldn't believe how much dust was in there. When we plugged in the power cable the orange light came on so we were excited. When we powered it on all the keyboard lights lit up so we thought we had fixed the problem but.that's all it did. It went no further except that the fan kicked on.There is a clicking noise coming from the cd drive about every second with the green light flashing. I suppose it is checking to see if there is a bootable cd in the cd drive. I have attempted to change the boot order by holding F1, then F2 but it still continues to try to read the cd drive. I can't get to the screen that will allow me to change the boot order.
I also put the OS disk in the cd drive, hoping that it would start with the disk but it just clicks. Hubby removed the cover of the cd drive and I could see that the cd is spinning. There were no problems with this laptop prior to the power problem. It was really working very well especially considering the age of it.
The information in my sig is not for the computer with the problem. It's actually for an old computer which my son now has at college.
When I start XP it gets to the Black page that shows Windows XP and the small bar beneath it that gives the appearance of loading. Once it gets here it just stops however, the bar keeps going. I am able to start in safe mode. I have switched video cards and disabled my USB ports. I don't know what else to do.

View 14 Replies View RelatedAll of a sudden, every time I boot, the desktop icons and background come up normally, and the mouse icon moves - but NOTHING on the desktop that I click on works. The mouse arrow becomes a hourglass icon on the blue bar at the bottom. No new software or hardware. The ONLY way to recover is to go to safe mode and restore to an earlier time. Interestingly, even if the restore says it was NOT successful to an earlier time and unchanged, the machine then works normally (until the next reboot). I've done: sfc scannow, crapcleaner, utility drive and registry scans, antivirus scans, chkdsk, etc - no help. I've looked carefully at ipconfig, but only the bare bones usual stuff is there.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy emachine PC, running on XP will, more often than not, not boot up without repeatedly pressing the start button on the tower. Before this problem began, when the computer ran normally, as soon as the ON button was pressed the cooling fans would whir at high speed for 2 seconds and then drop to a quieter, low rpm speed. The emachine logo would appear followed by the Microsoft screen, etc. Since the problem began, when the ON button is pressed the fans come up at high speed but will not drop to the quieter state, nor does the emachines logo appear. Essentially, the computer freezes.
