Home Stuck When Repairing
Jan 19, 2006
i have a dell dimension 2400 - running XP Home, which was infected with numerous viruses and spyware - these were cleared - though due to its very nature a number of os files were removed/deleted. I then decided to run a repair of windows XP home to reinstall these files. However, on numerous attempts, the repair gets through to the Preperation Phase ok, and then gets stuck at the "installing Windows" phase, with 33 minutes to go - with the "installing Devices" box at around 80% bar completed.Has anyone any ideas what to do and fix this - apart from a clean install of course!

I was trying to repair my desktop Windows XP Home installation.I have the original restore cds, but did not want to do a clean sweep, so I got hold of an XP Home cd, did all the repairing and copying of files, entered the key on the COA attached to my desktop, and all the process was fine. At the end, it asked me to activate the copy of windows, which I accepted because my key on the COA is all "clean". However, the process does not go anywhere, it only takes me to the desktop, which is blank and has nothing, not even the taskbar visible. The computer freezes.I have repaired other desktops and laptops I have at home before, and the process worked no problem, so I don't know what i did wrong this time.
Before I did the repairing on this desktop, I had disabled my ethernet adapter because I was connecting to the internet via wireless. So I'm thinking the problem is that the wireless card drivers got deleted, and the system cannot enable the ethernet adapter to connect to the internet to activate windows. First question is: Is this the case? Please help.I am not sure if the XP cd I got is an OEM version, or full retail. Second question: Could this be the problem? Finally, I was thinking of connecting an older hard disk that has a working copy of windows on it to my desktop (instead of the one I "repaired"), boot from it, and then activate the ethernet adapter, so I can then plug the original hard disk and hope the activation process to work.

Last week, my home page was hijacked by spyware (I think), it was actually 2 pages in length, the bottom of first page was a note "Removal instructions". I have windows XP SP2.I was able to go into the registry, with the help of another forum, and delete the offending file. Now my home page is white with my general icons, (I used to have the pretty beach picture of windows XP). I can't seem to restore the picture.I have also discovered the same file in "my computer" in system 32. When I press delete the icon disappears for about 3 seconds and then returns. The files name is "Twain Tech" and in system 32 as "Twunk 16" and "Twunk 32"

I have just started to have problems with my Acer T120E Aspire. When the pc is switched on it boots up as normal, showing the Windows XP home edition splash screen and goes to user accounts. When one is selected, it does'nt matter which one, it goes through the logging in procedure, showing the 'loading your personal settings' screen. However, after about ten seconds it goes blank the cpu fan cuts in and the computer restarts again.I decided to repair XP as I could'nt even log in under safe mode. I borrowed a disc as I have misplaced the original disc that was supplied.

I read somewhere in this forum that if you had a CD Key stuck on your computer you could install the Windows XP CD of your choice. What I mean to say is this: I have an HP Compaq computer that came with the Windows XP OEM bundled version and its own product Key stuck to the computer. So after the 90 day support with HP, I got rid of all the crapola that comes with their bundle, (AOL, Disney Channel, Silly things, etc.) and reformatted with a copy of Windows XP OEM, using the Product Key on the computer. NO Problem. I have done this several times before and only had one problem, which was resolved through phoning Microsoft Activation Center.

I don't really know where i should start so.well earlier today i installed a second hd in my computer to pull so files off of it for my sister and my mom, but when i got it working it said accsess was denied to there stuff i went on my moms computer to check if i hade already backed up there stuff of the old comp, so i go into her document to see if i could find the old documents and when i start scrolling through them the window freezes...so i leave it for a minute and while i'm waiting i close some other programs one of which was mozilla which was also frozen.I go back to the my document window and its still frozen.
I try to close it and of course its not responding so i click end now and it made the every thing disappear like the task bar and all the icons on the desktop are missing...so i wait and see if any thing will reappear and nothing does so i restart it and it starts booting up..the windows logo comes up and the little bars only gets half way across then it restarts and brings me to that menu where you can choose save mode or start normally and all that and no matter what i pick the comp just restarts and bring me back to the menu.

when enabled cause the problem.Workstation and Network Location awareness services. When disabled, the machine boots fine. But is useless unless the services are started manually.

i am living in costa rica and just recently purchased what i believe to be a refurbished hp nc6000. in downloading some items from microsoft, i confirmed that i have authentic xp professional installed. however, the previous owner could not provide me with the original cd, hense my dilema. in deleting some previously loaded software, i believe i inadvertantly deleted some shared files for other programs. is there anyway without the original disk to repair the installation or operating system. i have read about hidden partitions and the like, but am not confident enough to try this. i have the serial numbers and whatnot for my xp professional software, so i am not sure if having that info allows me to do anything without the actual cd. one of the problems is i have downloaded internet explorer 7 but it fails to completely install. i have gotten the most recent service packs and updates from microsoft but still no progress. i would go out to the local best buy and get the appropriate software new if i wasnt living in the middle of a third world country. there are computer repair shops close to me, but everyone has spanish operating systems and mine is xp in english and i cant afford to chance losing it. is there any way to recreate the software or operating system back to its original format with all original folders and files intact?

I have been trying to create an XP Disk. After following 8 pages of instructions, I was finished. Everything seems to work, but when I boot the disk (I put it first in the boot sequence) here are my actions, and the results, A blue screen comes up stating that it is loading a whole bunch of files e.g. kernerl debugger dll, USB hubs, drivers and so on and 'Windows Setup' at the top A block of writing comes up:"Welcome to Setup. This portion of the setup program prepares Microsoft (r) Windows XP to run on your computer To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER. this is the one I choose i press ENTER a message comes up that says:
"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running manufacturer supplied diagnostic or setup program. Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3." and thats the problem.

I attempted to repair windows (XP Pro SP2) using the windows cd. Due to some bad memory the repair did not work. I got multiple unable to copy *.dll files notices. I've corrected the memory problem. Now when I go to repair Windows using the CD the previous installation is not recognized. I don't get the "Setup found an existing windows installation, would you like to repair it" (paraphrasing, don't remember exact wording).

I attached my xp drive as a slave to my 2000 pro drive and booted. It checked my xp drive and then started to truncate everything. I now cannot reboot my xp drive. I tried using xp cd to repair but it says I can't due to error on partition, drive full etc. I have tried my friends partition software but it finds no errors. When I use his xp drive to see my xp drive, it says it is unreadable. Is there something out there to repair my truncated files? Is this fixable or is formating my only option. I am desperate to retain my xp drive data. Using parition magic 8, it shows my xp drive as a type 07 and my 2000 as a FAT drive.

About a week ago, I performed a fresh reinstallation of Windows XP Home (I posted here about it) in order to allow it to work with my new motherboard. Since then, everything had been working fine until I experienced a sudden Blue Screen of Death, yesterday, while playing the game 'The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay'. I rebooted and attempted to play the game again, but experienced another almost identical Blue Screen at a different point in the game.

I need to do an XP repair install on my Dell Dimension 8400 to fix several programs that no longer work (Update being the biggest problem). I had used this Forum a couple of months ago and doing the repair install was the recommended solution. I have a copy of the michaelstevenstech.com directions so I know what to do. Unfortunately, when I try to launch the "to setup Windows XP, press enter" step, the program comes back with an error message saying the hard drive is not found.

Ok, I finally decided I need to fdisk, format and reinstall windows xp. Repairing and re-installing are not options. Too many errors result. Here's the problem. I have several startup disks... from 95 through xp (which is actually ME in isquise). NONE of the fdisk commands seem to work. XP is so screwed up, I'm lucky to get back here, let alone find my original post. All I want to do is fdisk my C drive. My D drive is 120gig, and formatted just fine. I don't want to use it as my master though. I just want to put all my other stuff on it.

I have a hardrive( Maxtor 6Y200P0) wich have got corrupted and bad segments. (this seme to be a common problem with Maxtor drives) Im almmost sure this drive have psychical damaged clusters, cause i have tested alot & alots of tools that should fix this has failing in repairing this damaged clusters and segments. this includes Maxtor official PoweMax v 1.21, wich fails to complete the surface test. i have got an Error Diagnostic Code=de676679. a code with a 8 numeral should indicate that a Maxtor Drive drive is broken, and is in need of replacement. thats all i know where should i send this code for a real analyz?, cant find anything on Maxtor Website, Another question, there is allso an option to do a Low ore High level formatation of the drive. I have heard that this could fix corrupted segments, If so,this must only be possible on logical damaged hardrives, not psycial damaged drives right? i have waiting with reformatation cause im unsure what type damage the drive have, and this is my last alternative to do.? should i do a low/high level formatation anyway?

I'm trying to share folders between two laptops set up on a home wifi workgroup. Currently, both laptops are "seeing" each other's share folders (as mapped network drives), and both laptops have full internet access I have allowed simple file sharing on the XP Pro system. I have also set the firewalls to allow access, and I'm using AVG firewall instead of Windows firewall. However, only one of the computers is allowing access to the other. The XP Pro computer can access the share folders on the XP Home computer, but not vice versa. When using the XP Home computer, I can map the shared folders on the XP Pro computer, but when I try to access them, I get denied access.
