Blue Screen When Gaming - Reboot When Repairing
Jul 31, 2007
About a week ago, I performed a fresh reinstallation of Windows XP Home (I posted here about it) in order to allow it to work with my new motherboard. Since then, everything had been working fine until I experienced a sudden Blue Screen of Death, yesterday, while playing the game 'The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay'. I rebooted and attempted to play the game again, but experienced another almost identical Blue Screen at a different point in the game.

I have seen a similar problem posted previously on this forum. But after reading it i think this is a different problem, so, here goes: I recently bought a new graphic card: Radeon all-in-wonder x1800xl. Installed it on a clean system (did a reformat before i installed). The problem occurs after usually 30-60 minutes of gaming (so far with oblivion, black & white 2). The game freezes for about 30 sec and then goes into blue-screen mode.
The message is as follows:
Kernel-Data-inpage-error stop error screen
then there are a lot of numbers etc.
I have sometimes noticed a slight change in fan noise prior to freeze (speeding up)
After reebot everything's back to normal.........

I have been trying to create an XP Disk. After following 8 pages of instructions, I was finished. Everything seems to work, but when I boot the disk (I put it first in the boot sequence) here are my actions, and the results, A blue screen comes up stating that it is loading a whole bunch of files e.g. kernerl debugger dll, USB hubs, drivers and so on and 'Windows Setup' at the top A block of writing comes up:"Welcome to Setup. This portion of the setup program prepares Microsoft (r) Windows XP to run on your computer To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER. this is the one I choose i press ENTER a message comes up that says:
"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running manufacturer supplied diagnostic or setup program. Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3." and thats the problem.

I attached my xp drive as a slave to my 2000 pro drive and booted. It checked my xp drive and then started to truncate everything. I now cannot reboot my xp drive. I tried using xp cd to repair but it says I can't due to error on partition, drive full etc. I have tried my friends partition software but it finds no errors. When I use his xp drive to see my xp drive, it says it is unreadable. Is there something out there to repair my truncated files? Is this fixable or is formating my only option. I am desperate to retain my xp drive data. Using parition magic 8, it shows my xp drive as a type 07 and my 2000 as a FAT drive.

I also experienced the dread "XP reboots without warning" I understand this is by design in XP. Here's the twist. I ran my PC on XP Pro when I started getting the shutdown. In a attempt to diagnose the problem I used my brothers old PC to access my hard drive. I couldn't access my hard drive so I assumed it was because my brothers was running 98. I upgraded his PC to XP pro and wham...same thing now on his system and his hard drive. Almost immediately. His was known to have viruses. over the last two weeks I have installed XP pro and XP home in just about every conceivable pattern...upgrades from 98, full install from windows, full with reformat from boot disk, etc. There is only one thing consistent. 98 Runs fine, albeit slow and XP reboots at startup.

I have a friend who has a Dell Dimension 2400. She had a blue screen error with the following parameters 0x00000050 (0xfa3bedeb, 0x00000000, 0xfa3beded, 0x00000000). She was able to reboot at the time of the error but now she's getting a black screen and can not do anything at all.

I am using a Gateway Tablet PC. XP PRO; 2Gig ram; 80 gig hd; Within the last few days it has fallen apart. I have added nothing new. I boot it on and all seems well. I can run an app, work in it and then close it. Then the mouse freezes or slows to a crawl. I can not open any thing else. I registered several DLL's such as urlmon.dll,etc. because of a Micrsoft fix listed elsewhere but this did not work. All spyware and virus checks have been negative. CTRL-ALT-Del gives me an error that the taskmgr.exe could not be initialized. Now the only way to shut down is to totally power off and if reboot I get the blue screen while the disk is checked and it is always negative

Well, I have mixed emotions posting back here on TSG. I would have liked to have done it for a happier reason. I've been gone for a while (no computer problems lol) but I hate to return by mentioning that I have a problem with my trusty old Dell. And to make matters worse, this is my 1,666th post. Anyways, I was playing The Sims 2 and all of a sudden, out of the blue, the screen goes completely black. The little green monitor light starts blinking (like it does when you leave the monitor on) and the computer is running but the hard drive activity light isn't attempting to do anything.

I haven't fully rebooted in a week or so, mostly hiberating and that works just fine. I rebooted just today and encountered a blue screen of death indicating something about: "BOOT VOLUME UNMOUNTABLE" For the past 6 hours I've been reading all about this and the related problem: "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable." Apparently my disk got corrupted somehow.
It's apparently not as simple as BOOT.INI being bad as is said to be a common problem. My problem seems very severe in the following way: I actually have another Windows XP installation on the same computer. It still works fine as does linux. However, if I try to access the other partition/drive (called e: in the other windows) then I get: "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable."

I am running Windows XP Homedition. I have two drives inside, the regular C: drive and I have a Slave drive F: with all my photos and music and documents. The problem I'm having is that everytime I restart or reboot my system it say it needs to check F: drive for consistency. It haven't been doing that until now. Then once it goes through that the system comes up. I try to click on an icon like my internet or registry program, nothing comes up, its like a read only file or something. Its not executing the program. THEN all of a sudden I get a blue screen. It says this::"Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacture for driver updates. try changing video adapters. "Check with your hardware vendor for aany BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use SAFE mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advance SStartup options, and then select Safe Mode."

My Dell Inspiron 2650 laptop on boot-up consistently gives a blue screen with ERROR (0X000000ED (0X81ACA988, 0XC0000006,0X00000000,0X00000000). I have read most of your fixes BUT in my case no matter what I do it ALWAYS boots to this screen. Trying to boot to Safe Mode results in a list of drivers prefixed by ?multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)c:windowsdriver.sys etc The machine will not boot from Floppy or CD and I?ve tried every combination of boot sequence under the F12 menu. In the BIOS it will not allow me to change any relevant settings, only the ?system date?, ?system time? and ?quiet boot?.and I cannot select the dropdown menu items either. Booting under Normal Startup, I see the Windows Logo and all that, but then the blue screen appears. I?ve tried removing the hard disk to get it to boot to floppy, removing the battery (which is totally dead), memory module, etc. Only thing left I think is to sling it in the Caribbean Ocean and go drink a bottle of rum.

so every time i boot the computer i get that good ol' blue screen of death right where windows should open to my desktop.. instead it says "welcome" with the light blue background.. the screen goes black and then comes back with the blue screen.. the message on the screen says:
stop: 0x0000007a (0xe16dac70, 0xc0000185, 0xbf985c66, 0x20e18860)
win32k.sys - address bf985c66 base at bf800000, datestamp 41107f7a
beginning dump of physical memory dumping physical memory to disk: and counts up to 100 then the computer restarts. i was able to get into safe mode to try a system restore but when the computer restarted it never finished the install (it actually gave me the confirmation that the restore was successful while i was doing a repair install later on) i have tried going through the windows install disc repair utility and doing a chkdsk /p and a chkdsk /r upon doing /r it froze at 53 percent and did not move (i left it for a good 4 hours the first time before restarting it.. and then over night the second time.. and both times it never passed 53 percent............

When building a new computer for gaming, what XP version is most satisfactory? the 32 bit or the 64 bit version? Are the advantages of the 64 bit version going to out weigh the cons of driver and app support?

I was playing Dragon Age when the game freezed horribly. It displayed flickering green dots all across my screen and I had to manually restart my pc. When I came back into windows XP, the only thing I saw were large black and white rectangulars all across my screen. So I decided to let it rest for 30 min before trying again. When I did that, the black & white rectangulars were gone and I could do everything normal again. Except for gaming. When I tried Dragon Age, it crashed again the same way. After another 30 min, I tried another game (a hl2 mod, which doesn't tax the system that hard) and it froze again after a while (say 2 minutes), but my screen didn't display the strange rectangulars anymore

I have a window flashing on the task bar briefly. Just a little box like a new window opening that appears then disappears without opening a window. It usually doesn't bother me, but when I'm playing a game like far Cry for instance, it minimizes the game, which besides being very annoying also causes the game to play poorly sometimes when I go back into the game. Does anyone know a way to figure out what program is causing this or how to stop it?

I was playing Crossfire (a FPS game) and suddenly the screen froze and pressing alt + tab or alt+ctrl+delete did not change anything. As a last resort I pressed the restate button. It loaded as usual and before the log in screen arrived the whole screen went black and I couldn't do anything. I've tried restarting and waiting for a long time now. I try f8 to enter safe node but it takes me to a blue menu with nothing but 2 booting options. I don't have any CD for my xp and My computer has no cd slot but it does have a floppy disc spot.
