Entering Bios : Wont Move Up And Down For Changing Boot Sequence?
Dec 21, 2004I'm having trouble when I enter my BIOS. It seems that once I enter, I can't move up or down or do anything at all. At first, I thought it migt be my keyboard, but I switched my keyboard with the keyboard from my other computer. It still had the same problem. I don't know why my BIOS won't let me do anything. Can anyone please help? I just want to change the boot sequence so I can wipe my drive

Apr 4, 2007Running a Dell XPS710. Was on the phone with tech support and had to go into setup to check on something. after I got off the phone, I rebooted and tried to access setup and can not. I don't know if I accidentally checked off something that won't allow me to use the keyboard until the machine boots into windows because pressing F2 (Setup) or F12 (Boot Options) when the Dell splash screen appears won't work. It just goes into Windows.

I have my settings in power management in control panel set at never for turn of hard drive etc, etc...so in theory, my pc should never shut down on its own??....also, both IE and firefox from time to time get a message "...has encountered a problem and needs to shut down.." when this happens I send the report to whereever. and restart my browser...I've tried running in safe mode and still get the same problems....more ofter w/IE than firefox

Apr 28, 2005After resolving an issue resulting from a printer installation, I was able to get my computer back to a state of normalcy, except that the CD drives were no longer found by the system.This is a Win 2K and there is a DVD-ROM and a CD-RW.So rather than do the smart thing and reinstall them via the OEM CDs, I went into the Bios and tried to tell the Bios that they were the Secondary Master and Slave drives (duh).So now, the system hangs, telling me that the primary slave auto detect wasn't finding anything. (Even though I didn't address that when I screwed with it.)I cannot even enter the BIOS setup, since the hangup occurs before the system even gets to that point.If I can get back to BIOS setup, I can at least reset to defaults, then figure out how to do the right thing, but for now, I'm STUCK.It's an MSI KT3 Ultra Mother board If more info is needed I can probably get it, but wanted to keep the initial post short.

The only way I can get itno my xp pro system, is to use "F8" during the bios check, the select my hd from there, then it seems only half of my programs work, and it also seems to be randomly changing the programs that do not work, when I do this.

May 10, 2008I just finished assembling my new build. It boots and I can get to the BIOS. I even have it booting from the DVD drive so I can load Win XP.However, when I get to the Windows Setup and it asks me if I want to setup windows(press enter), Repair(some other key), quit(F3) my keyboard won't work. I hit "Enter" because I want to install XP and nothing happens. It is not responding to my keyboard strokes.
This is strange because the keyboard works in the BIOS.

I am sure that the bios have been affected and attempts to boot from either a floppy or cd get ignored in the loading process and the bios canot find the module to activate the periferal devices ie: keyboard, mouse, usb ports. Oct 20, 2006I did for a while activate the "prompt" alternative on Favorites/Tools/Internet Options/Privacy/Advanced to block unwanted cookies. Then I blocked cookies from a site that I usually visit, marking the "always." option. The result was that I was blocked from entering the site. I then reversed all of my previous actions, letting the browser deal automatically with cookies as it saw fit (greying out all the rest of the alternatives on that window), restarted the computer and returned to the site. But all I get is a pop-up saying "You must activate cookies on your browser", at various stages, sometimes after I give the password and all, sometimes as soon as the home window comes up. I repeated all the a/m actions several times, but with the same result. I have XP with SP2, IE6, Pentium d.

Canceling Xp Install After Entering The Product Key?
Jan 18, 2006can one cancel a xp upgrade install (over w98se) directly after entering the product key without damaging the current w98 configuration? in other words, can the install process be stopped harmlessly before performing the Dynamic Update which you have a yes/no option? the pc uses a shared wireless net connection and in order to perform Dynamic Update you must have an active Internet connection. if for some reason the pc was to lose its connection would xp not see it and begin automatically installing xp without being able to halt it.

May 22, 2006I have the option to 'open explorer window' in winzip checked so it opens an explorer window of the destination I unzip files to. Recently I noticed that stopped working. Then explorer crashed causing my start menu to disapear so I used ctrl-alt-dlt to open task manager and entered 'explorer' in the run box and clicked ok. Nothing happened. explorer did not reopen.I then figured out if I entered 'c:windowsexplorer.exe' in the run box explorer would then open.I'm guessing both these problems are related as it seems winzip is unable to to open explorer.Does anyone know how to fix this? I just recently scanned for virus' with 2 seperate scanners & and scanned for spyware with 2 separate programs and im clean & i only surf with firefox. So its not virus or spyware.

Dec 1, 2008my computer was running totally fine until i was converting some videos with itunes for my itouch and then the itunes froze the comp. it did the freeze i restarted the computer but ...nothing. i can't even get into the bios screen! everything powers up fine so i know its not the psu. I've tried removing extra hdds and starting with just the main hdd and removing all peripherals except monitor but still nothing. there is no resposnse form the hdd after initial power up. i noticed that the activitiy light remains dead after the initial power up. i hear the hdds spinning but nothing is happening. i dont understand why it wont even go into bios screen...i can see and hear the cpu and vid card fans spinning so i know they are getting power

May 4, 2007Well in doing resurch for a freind in trying to understand the process of overclocking and sheer curiosty to see what my system would be able to push alittle harder i found my way in my bios and desided reluctently to play around with it some to see if i could get my medocer pc to push alittle harder than what it is set for and well i saved and almost immeditly my screen went blank and every time i try to restart my computer, there is nothing being emulated by my screen even thought the montier is in prime shape. aghh so how badly should i kick my own tush and what should i do to repair what i have broken???!?

Aug 10, 2006Got a bit of a problem with my housemates pc.A friend gave him some extra RAM, i checked it out and it was crucial 512mb pc2100 CL2.5, and although it didn't match his exsisting RAM it seemed to me that his mobo would only run the FSB at 200mhz anyway so i went ahead and fitted it.It worked fine I then noticed his system temp was running a little high (60-65 degrees), so i took his heatsink off and cleaned the dust and refitted it with some new thermal compound.I added too much and the temp went up. To nearly 90 degrees.I shut it dwon as i didn't want the cpu to pop, cleaned it off, reapplied less compound and figured this would work fine.Now we have the problem. Most of the time: Power on and nothing happens. No bios, no beeps. Occasionally: Power on, i jump into the bios, the temp looks fine (30-40 degrees) and then it freezes right there in the bios after about 30 seconds to a minute.This sounds like a heat issue, but the last temp reading before freeze is 33 degrees.?I've double and triple checked that the heatsink is on properly and thats fine. I followed the official guide on how much compound to use (a blob the size of an uncooked short grain of rice).
