View 5 Replies View Relatedmy computer suddenly displays a message."entering sleep mode" and restarts. I have my settings in power management in control panel set at never for turn of hard drive etc, etc...so in theory, my pc should never shut down on its own??....also, both IE and firefox from time to time get a message "...has encountered a problem and needs to shut down.." when this happens I send the report to whereever. and restart my browser...I've tried running in safe mode and still get the same problems....more ofter w/IE than firefox
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am using windows xp and just moments ago I get a problem. windows will not boot at all. Nothing unusual at start up but no windows icons/usual windows start up appear and computer sits there fans running. If I try to start in safe mode the computer hangs at system32/config/system along with the usual prerequisites and does nothing after that.Circumstances right before this started.I plugged in an old IDE harddrive(making 2 harddrives plugged in) in order to retrieve some old data. Everything starts up fine but windows freezes 30 sec into startup and the mouse moves but nothing happens(much like my previous registry problems).Restarting leads to the problem stated above.

My Inspiron 6000 would freeze after being put in standby mode overnight and I would have to force shutdown. Soemone on this forum advised me to check the Power Options in Control Panel. How should I set it up so the system won't hang after overnight standby? My current settings: With AC adapter plugged in:

System standby: Never
System hibernates: Never

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy computer, when started up in normal mode, just goes to a blank red screen....no icons, no nothing. The only way you can get anything to work in normal mode is by way of the task manager. In safe mode, however, I have access to everything except for sound. I have gone through the Microsoft website and ran all of the virus tests and scans. They say they find things and that they have removed them, but after restarting, it's the same old thing!! I'm pretty sure it's some sort of virus

View 14 Replies View RelatedMy computer seems to be in a mess and I have absolutely no idea why.It will only start in Safe Mode, trying last known configuration and normal start ups cause it to freeze atthe loading screen. It started when my computer randomly froze up while I was using it. I tried rebooting it but only safe mode worked, however when I left it alone for a couple of hours it worked normally for around 10 minutes, then froze up again.I thought it could be overheating so I left it for the night, but its still not booting up normally.I've tried using msconfig to make it do a diagnostic startup but that doesn't work either.
View 1 Replies View RelatedHusband upgraded my puter yesterday. New mother board graphics card (VGA Asus more/new ram and new processor and a CPU. Will only boot up in safemode or safemode with networking. As it boots up a screen pops up that "appears" to be telling me why, but it goes off so quick I can't read it. Is there a way to freeze that screen so it can be read? Surely there's some kind of "log in log" that tells you this somewhere in XP?? After booting up for the 1st time we had 2 question marks in the device mgr and we finally got it so there are none. But still it will only boot up in safe mode. We're thinking that boot up screen will tell us what the problem is.

When I try to boot up Windows XP, when its at the windows loading screen with the Windows logo, the bar under it the blue thing will move for about 6 or 7 times and then just freeze and stop. Then I restart the computer and choose to boot in safe mode which is the only mode that works. This is the second time this has happened, the first time it happened through safe mode I got the Windows Xp.iso image from microsoft.com, and then used a product key locator to find it on my pc because I do not have the windows xp boot discs but my original copy of XP is legit.
I tried to reinstall Windows XP XPprofessional instead of XPhome), and all went well untill my computer had to restart for setup. When the computer restarted I got the message: "Windows XP setup cannot run under Safe Mode, Setup will restart your computer"(I think I should have done the XP installation in the normal mode, shouldn't I)But even when I choose "Start up in Normal configuration"(or something like that)in the Windows Advanced Option Menu, while restarting, It starts up in the safe mode.So now my computer KEEPS RESTARTING IN SAFE MODE
I am running Windows XP on an 8 year old Gateway computer, and it will only start in safe mode. This happened after I updated my hardware drivers.I got a fatal system error box,and system restore doesn't work. When I try to use the Gateway Restore discs, they won't play because my D drive isn't recognized. Should I just scrap everything and get a new HD since I haven't had any luck with reinstalling,or is there a way for a computer idiot to reinstall Windows XP without a disc? I never got one, this was my roommate's old PC.Sorry if this is in the wrong place.

I was trying to install a second monitor to my desktop and decided to disable my NVIDIA GEFORCE 7300LE and also think I changed the video/ monitor settings to auto somewhere in the device manager. The thing is that this version of the xp didn't come with an installation disk for me to reboot the sequence so it keeps asking me for a diskette. I can't even go into safe mode only the f2 setup. PLEASE help me! I really don't want to lose my files.
I have a Great Quality ZX-3310 laptop. It recently froze up and would not reboot. I unplugged the machine and plugged it back in to restart and now I get either the windows start up page that freezez before it is loaded or I get this message: "RS482M- Test Bios BR#13207A". Sometimes I get nothing on the screen but I can hear the fan run. It will not let me start in Safe Mode. The DVD drive recognizes a DVD it there but it immediately freezes on start up.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently got a few notifications of viruses on my computer. Along with it came a lot of adware pop-ups. I downloaded Kaspersky AV 7.0 from their site and am using it as a trial version. I had an older version of McAfee, but hadn't renewed and do not have up-to-date virus definitions. As the title reads, my computer will only work when I boot windows in safe mode with networking. When I try to boot it up regularly, it goes very slow at the log-in screen and then once I log in, there's only a black screen with the mouse pointer. I left it at that window for a few hours hoping it would eventually load. Not the case. Same thing happens when I boot in safe mode with the exception that ctrl+alt+del works and will bring up the Windows Task Manager and then I can run/terminate programs from there. But no start toolbar or icons or anything else. I have done several full scans and they come up with viruses every time.

I do recall when I was able to get in safe mode an error for my printer came up so I want to get in safe mode and try to uninstall it. but now safe mode won't work and after doing that part in the link its says I have 2 O/s to choose from?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI've been working on my father's computer (an HP pavillion zv5000), and realized that he had some Windows XP updates to be installed, so I decided to download them. What I didn't realize at the time was that he hadn't installed any updates in almost 2 years (though Automatic Updates appear to be enabled). When I rebooted after the installations were complete, I could not start in Normal Mode. When starting normally, I get a black screen with white writing saying that there's been a problem with the computer (can't remember word-for-word), and gives me the option to start in safe mode, safe mode with networking, and another safe mode. It also offers to start up with the last settings that worked, or normal mode. When I try to boot up in normal mode, it sends me back to that same screen, and likewise when I try to boot with the last settings. Now it only works in Safe Mode. I'm not really sure what's happened, and if it's related to the updates or if it could be a virus.
