Device Driver Preventing The Machine From Entering Hibernation

Sep 12, 2009

I've tried deleting the hiberfil.sys file and looking everywhere I can think on the interwebs to find a solution, but have been unsuccessful.

When I try to hibernate, I get this:

The device driver for the 'WDC WD6400AACS-00G8B0' device is preventing the machine from entering hibernation. Please close all applications and try again. If the problem persists, you may need to update this driver. That's my boot drive. It's a Caviar green. From what I've read, it's rarely a driver problem, but caused by something indirectly.

No Standby Mode - Receive Error - ATI Rage Pro Accelerated Graphics Port

May 24, 2005

I'm trying to find an answer for a friend of mine that recently upgraded his computer from windows 98 se to windows xp prof. One problem I can't seem to solve for him is that I can't get his system to go into standby mode. I receive this error: On a computer that has an ATI Rage Pro accelerated graphics port (AGP) 2X video adapter installed, when you attempt to put the computer into Standby mode, you may receive the following error message: The device driver for the "ATI Technologies, Inc. 3D RAGE PRO AGP 2X" device is preventing the machine from entering standby. Please close all applications and try again. If the problem persists, you may need to update this driver. This behavior occurs because Windows XP does not provide power management support for this video adapter. I've already updated his driver to this one: Windows XP Display Driver version 5.10.2600.6010 And I still receive the same message..I'm really wondering if it's something else causing it.

Preventing Device Discovery At Boot

May 7, 2010

I have a Windows XP PC dedicated to a machine that is constantly sending data via a serial port to the PC. When we power up the system the PC will sometimes think that the serial data coming in is a "new device" and installs it as a serial mouse. When the boot process is complete the PC runs a program from the Startup folder. When this program tries to open the serial port it is blocked by the "serial mouse" it thinks is there.

We have tried many things to prevent this problem. Disabling the mouse in Device Manager works for a while but eventually XP decides there is something wrong and does things like disable the COM port. We have tried disabling the Plug N Play services using MSCONFIG. This does not seem to prevent the detection of the "serial mouse" on boot up. We have a fixed set of hardware and software for this system that will never change. So I'd like to just disable all (or serial) device discovery on boot up. How is this done on XP?

Preventing "This USB Device Can Perform Faster" Popup

Aug 24, 2006

I have an older PC running XP Home that I know only has USB 1.1 ports.

How do I permanently stop the "This USB device can perform faster if you connect it to a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port. For a list of available ports, click here." balloon pop-up whenever I plug in a USB 2.0 device? This reminder is starting to be as annoying as MS-Office's Clippy or the Windows Search Assistant dog.

Standby Mode Not Working - Microsoft Natural PS2 Keyboard Device Driver

Jan 5, 2006

Since installing Windows XP SP2 (upgrade from SP1) I noticed that Standby does not function. When I manually go to Standby, or if my laptop tries to go into Standby as per the power management settings I have set, I get the following message: "Standby has been prevented by the Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard device driver. You may need to install an updated driver."

Any ideas on what I can try. I have tried uninstalling the keyboard in safe mode and rebooting to reinstall the keyboard drivers. I have also checked my BIOS settings, and tried resetting the power management settings. I have even updated my ATI video adapter drivers. I noticed the problem shortly after installing SP2. There are no updated drivers available from Gateway for the keyboard.

Rage 128 Pro Ultra GL AGP Driver

Jun 16, 2006

First of all, yes I know my card is ancient. I was trying to install a new driver from ATI, so I (or atleast I think I did) uninstalled my previous driver and then restarted, and then tried to install the driver I got from ATi's website. I get an error message when I try to install it which says that the driver doesn't fit the adapter. Now I'm stuck without a driver. I'm using Windows XP, if that matters, which it probably does.

Cookie - I Was Blocked From Entering The Site

Oct 20, 2006

I did for a while activate the "prompt" alternative on Favorites/Tools/Internet Options/Privacy/Advanced to block unwanted cookies. Then I blocked cookies from a site that I usually visit, marking the "always." option. The result was that I was blocked from entering the site. I then reversed all of my previous actions, letting the browser deal automatically with cookies as it saw fit (greying out all the rest of the alternatives on that window), restarted the computer and returned to the site. But all I get is a pop-up saying "You must activate cookies on your browser", at various stages, sometimes after I give the password and all, sometimes as soon as the home window comes up. I repeated all the a/m actions several times, but with the same result. I have XP with SP2, IE6, Pentium d.
Any help will be appreciated - Amos.

Jan 18, 2006

can one cancel a xp upgrade install (over w98se) directly after entering the product key without damaging the current w98 configuration? in other words, can the install process be stopped harmlessly before performing the Dynamic Update which you have a yes/no option? the pc uses a shared wireless net connection and in order to perform Dynamic Update you must have an active Internet connection. if for some reason the pc was to lose its connection would xp not see it and begin automatically installing xp without being able to halt it.

Entering Explorer In Run Box Doesn't Work

May 22, 2006

I have the option to 'open explorer window' in winzip checked so it opens an explorer window of the destination I unzip files to. Recently I noticed that stopped working. Then explorer crashed causing my start menu to disapear so I used ctrl-alt-dlt to open task manager and entered 'explorer' in the run box and clicked ok. Nothing happened. explorer did not reopen.I then figured out if I entered 'c:windowsexplorer.exe' in the run box explorer would then open.I'm guessing both these problems are related as it seems winzip is unable to to open explorer.Does anyone know how to fix this? I just recently scanned for virus' with 2 seperate scanners & and scanned for spyware with 2 separate programs and im clean & i only surf with firefox. So its not virus or spyware.
