Compaq Win ME Old Virus? Won't Boot Up, With Floppy
Mar 16, 2007
I have an older Compaq I have ignored for over a year. When I turn it on it acts like it is always in run mode, no disc in it. I used an old floppy to re-boot to no success, I downloaded an ME Boot file of net and loaded it onto my 512mb stick and slid into the usb port also with no success. My intention is to boot the PC up enough to retrieve some data and then do an FBI wipe on the hard drive and start it like new. can i get this up and running without wiping everything first?

I have a laptop (IBM Thinkvantage Thinkpad) and when i boot it does the following:Shows motherboard graphic Goes to "Starting windows." with a loading bar under it.Stops and says "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:WINNTSYSTEM32CONFIG SYSTEMced" Now i know that that means the hive file is too big and i know how to fix it But I don't have a Win2k boot disk and i don't have any floppy drives installed I had an idea to try and do a network boot through the BIOS setup which it does allow but i don't really have any server programs to "host" a network boot with my Windows XP desktop.

I am trying to get a machine up and running for a friend. It is one he bought off of someone up north and he doesn't know the admin password to be able to use it.
I originally was going to use some software I found in the forums that requires me to boot from a floppy or a cd. I checked the BIOS and have it booting from the hard disk last and yet I cannot boot from either the cd or the floppy. At this point I am willing to Fdisk the whole thing and start fresh. It shouldn't really matter since he has never been on the machine before and can't have any data that he would care about.

I am trying to install a dual boot system on XP but I am unable to boot from the floppy dirve with a Windows ME bootable disk. The A drive is the first thing in the bios and it is set for 3.5, 1.44mb size disk. At the very bottom of the bootup screen, it shows "Floppy Disk Fail (40). The floppy drive works ok whenever XP is up and running in that I can put a floppy in the drive and open it and view the files, copy the files and most anything I need to do. I have read everything I can find on that error but since the drive seems to work ok other than for boot up, it has me stumped.

I keep noticing that my floppy drive would activate when I'd go to log onto the computer or turn it off. I disabled the A drive and since then things are kind of going the way it was when I first bought this computer. I did manage to check the areas that were mentioned before. I found nothing that came close to what was mentioned to look for.Did I manage to contain this thing in the floppy? I still want it off of my computer.

my hard drive will simply not boot. i am having a problem with NTLDR is missing. i have tried at least 4 different methods of fixing it. it will not boot from a floppy drive or cd. the hard drive is about a year old. i think the problem started after i used a cleaning program called PC-decrapifier.. thinking it would speed up my computer.. i would like to fix this problem asap and the hard drive isn't bad, because i can connect it to my other computer as a slave and access my files, but i still can not boot it even in another computer.

Just got a new computer with Gigabyte GA-K8SNC-939 Motherboard. The problem is that on each boot , and shutdown, the floppy drive is accessed (i.e. motor runs ).The floppy drive is NOT selected as a boot option in the bios and the access on boot comes just after the 'Loading Personal Settings" screen. On shutdown it is just before the end , not immediately on shutdown.I seem to remember there was a Floppy Seek setting somewhere in Windows at one time, but I can't seem to find it in XP SP 2. As it happens well into the boot cycle, I don't think it's related to the motherboard.

THis dang laptop is frustrating the heck out of me!!!!! I have a couple issues going. Sometimes when I boot up, it goes to the desktop then randomly either reboots on its own or freezes to the point that I have to use th power to shut down as Ctrl-Alt-Del does NOTHING!
Here lately another issue has been more frequent in that I can't boot up at all! I was able to get on the HP site today (once) and it suggested reseting the RAM so did that...no luck...the battery works when it's charged, so eliminated that. I have 2 AC adapters that are fairly new so shouldn't be that I think. What it's doing now is when I power on, the power LED doesn't come on. THe hard drive is solid green, then the battery is solid yellow, then the green goes out, then the yellow goes out and nothing. Through this whole process, the screen is black.

I have a Compaq Presario 5000 with 192M of RAM, 866MHz, and 40G HD. It had Windows Me loaded on it, and I tried installing W2K, but it didn't work. Here is the error message that I get: couldn't open drive multi(0) disk(0) rdisk(0) partition(1)
NTLDR: couldn't open drive multi(0) disk(0) rdisk(0) partition(1) As some of you suggested in other potings, I made sure that the boot from CD was the first option in BIOS. I tried installing Windows 98. NT4, 2000, and XP using bootable CDs and startup disks but didn't get anywhere. I booted in DOS and formatted the HD and used different partitions sizes and formatted them in FAT and NTFS, and I still got the same result. The cable is connected properly to the HD and there are no apparent damage/problem with anything inside. Linux works like a champ on it, but windows doesn't.

My computer was working fine this morning, I didn't download anything or do anything different, just normal web searching. As I'm loading a web page, the computer freezes. I Cntrl Alt Dlt and nothing, so I turn off my computer and turn in back on, it reboots to the Win screen where you sign in as an identity, I enter my password and it freezes. Again, I have to reboot the computer manually, and it freezes at the Compaq screen that comes on when you first turn on the computer. I turned off the comp, opened it, removed my fan, blew it out a bit, removed the processor and reseated it (in the process, reseated it incorrectly and bent a far corner prong, attempted to straighten w/tweezers, and ultimately BROKE it off...DOH!). I wasn't sure if the broken prong would have a big effect, so I reseated it correctly, reseated my memory, and tried again, same thing, just hangs at the Compaq screen

I have a Compaq Presario Computer with windows XP on it. recently i started getting an error message which says lsass.exe and the computer doesnt go any further after I click on ok which is the only option there. It just goes to a blank black screen. someone mentioned to me that i should try to do a system restore on it through the safe mode, but that doesnt work either becasue same error comes even in safe mode. i have tons of data on this computer and i cannot afford to lose it. i need a way to recover my data. it seems to me that the only option i may have is ot do a system recovery through the cds that i got when i purchased the computer, is that true? someone also mentioned to me that if i have the Operating System CD then i might not have to do anything but just repair. How does this work?
I cannot seem to find the O.S cd, where can i get it from? Is it the same as the Windows XP cd? also, this problem has been occuring since a few days now and of course i havent been turning on the computer since there isnt much i can do, so by this problem just being there is it making it worse or not? i just dont have the time right now but does that mean that the problem just sitting there is harming it further? Some people have also told me of how to recover data using Ubuntu or something, how good is that? please help me in this asap.

I have a problem with a Compaq Presario running XP Home. I took the CD player out and cleaned out broken pieces of a CD that was destroyed in it. I got it cleaned out, put back together and now the pc won't boot up. I don't know what went wrong. Cleaning the CD player was quite easy and went back together okay. I hooked all of the wires up the way they were. On the front of this computer, there are two lights. One on the left which is green, and one on the right which is orange. Normally, when the power button is pushed, the green light comes on first, then the orange light comes on during the loading process. You can see the boot process on the monitor.
Now, after hooking it back up today, when the power button is pushed, the green light comes on, then the orange one comes on and goes back off after a moment. The green light stays on. Nothing at all shows up on the monitor, not even a blinking cursor -- it just stays blank. It stays that way indefinitely nothing. The monitor light is on so it is apparently getting power, but shows nothing. I'm sure the monitor is hooked up correctly; it can only be plugged in one way. While I had everything unhooked and was cleaning the CD player, I plugged the CD player back in for a moment and plugged in the power cord to the pc and pushed the power button. The power came on and allowed me to eject the empty tray. I did this to get the tray out of the way so I could clean beneath it. I tried to turn the power back off with the pc power button after ejecting the tray and it wouldn't seem to shut down.

I originally had XP Pro when the problem first started. When booting, the normal boot screen will come up with the "compaq" logo and F1 for setup f10 for restore, and then normally proceeds to the windows xp pro screen with the scrolling bar at the bottom. Now on boot, this bar will stay scrolling acting like it is trying to boot and it takes literally anywhere from 6 hours to 3 days to start up. I used restore points and the same thing happened. When I start in safe mode, the normal safe mode multidisk prompt comes up and even that will stay on winsys32driversagp330.sys for the same amount of hours before it finally boots up. I also reinstalled my windows xp.

It started with the NTLDR is missing error,so I load the recovery console and prepare to copy it to the drive when I notice ALL the boot files are missing, in fact every file on the root of C drive is gone.So I make a boot disk from my lap top copy the boot files to the disk and give this a try. Boots fine and seems to run perfect. Copy the boot files to the C drive, reboot numerous times, all good so I go home, leaving him the boot disk and showing him what to do just in case.
Next day same thing, What we seem to have determined is that the files seem to disappear later in the evening. I had him run all the pgms he normally does for a good while, quit the pgm and check C. The files are still there. after a few hours of fooling around he leaves PC on and goes watch TV. Comes back about 11:00pm to turn off PC, checks C drive and they're gone again. He re copies the files, shuts down and goes to bed.Next day PC boots fines before work, after work etc... BUT some time later in the evening it happens again.

I had a problem on booting which is caused by a virus which had corrupted some of the system files. All my efforts to get the system restore had failed. How do I get into the system to go to system restore points. All my efforts to choose all the alternatives in the screen such as safe boot, last known good configuration etc failed. It goes on a cyclic mode again and again coming to the same screen. In such a condition how to go to my system restore point to choose the earlier restore point.

I have the complete set of my PC's OEM Disks that I've used once when my OS was completely messed up, had Geeks Rescue out and they couldn't figure out what was wrong, so I know what they are for. What I'm not understanding are the several tools I'm afraid to open listed in my "Start"/"All Programs" I have both "Compaq"/"Compaq Presario PC Tools" with "Compaq Application Recovery"/"Compaq Recovery CD-DVD Creator"/"Compaq Recovery Tools CD"/"Compaq Support Information"/"Compaq System Recovery"/"Remote Assistance"/"Safety and Comfort Guide"

I have a dell PC with windows XP Media Center installed. I think that a virus damaged the boot sector in fact I cannot start my PC.
All I am able to get to is the BIOS or the diagnostics tool, F8 doesn't work, which means I cannot restart in safe mode or last known good configuration and if I use alt+F11, which is the option you have on Dell PC to reformat it in order to have everything the way it was at the time you bought it, it doesn't work.
A friend of mine told me to boot from the CD and then use the fixboot command, the problem is that DELL does not give OS CDs anymore and I honestly do not know what to do

applications were running slow, having problems closing etc. I expected a virus problem, but NIS 2005 did not detect any viruses. This morning I attempted to boot the machine as usual, and I found that windows would not boot after repeated attempts in any mode. I borrowed a friends windows XP cd, i dont have mine on hand, and attempted to repair the installation. However, when it tried to copy files to the hard drive it said that it could not detect it.
Naturally, seeing this i assumed that the harddrive had gotten knocked around, bad power lead, etc. I made sure that the connecters were securely attached and booted again, repair etc, same problem. I believe that the problem lies with the configuration of using a PCI card to connect the hard drive to the motherboard. When its connected to the mother board, however, the boot agent wont run, saying that the "disk is not ready" or something to that extent.

Helping a friend with his computer (Gateway w/XP Home SP2) and discovered his floppy drive does not detect the floppy disk when it is inserted. I was attempting to created Ghost images from the floppy and it would boot into the OS instead of the bootable floppy. Checked BIOS and boot sequence was correct (2nd boot device). Tried 3 different disks still no joy. Clicked on A:/ drive in Windows Explorer (with floppy disk inserted) and got "Device not accessible". Checked floppy drive properties in Device Manager and it says device is operating normally.
I have not yet opened the tower to check connections, but to date the tower has never been opened since the computer was purchased a couple of years ago. I do not know whether the floppy has ever been actually used. My friend doesn't remember ever using it.Checked the bootable floppy in my computer and it worked just fine.
