I cannot run a anti-virus because I don't know What the owner account password is, and I cannot login to the admin account. Any way of getting past this? (such as doing a install despite the virus or prhaps bypassing the login screen altogether)

I have a dell PC with windows XP Media Center installed. I think that a virus damaged the boot sector in fact I cannot start my PC.
All I am able to get to is the BIOS or the diagnostics tool, F8 doesn't work, which means I cannot restart in safe mode or last known good configuration and if I use alt+F11, which is the option you have on Dell PC to reformat it in order to have everything the way it was at the time you bought it, it doesn't work.
A friend of mine told me to boot from the CD and then use the fixboot command, the problem is that DELL does not give OS CDs anymore and I honestly do not know what to do
Bought a new copy of XP with service pac 3 to put on a p4 with a western digital 300 gig hd. I came back to check to see if the formatting was complete and I had the message "a disk read error has occurred press ctl+alt+del to restart".And when I tell it to boot from cdrom xp disk, it starts "setup is imspecting your computer's hardware configuration" and the screen goes blank after a few seconds and it stops doing anything. I'm afraid the mistake I made was deleting the boot sector partition.

However, I came to find out you can only have one computer assigned to each cd, unless I wanna buy another one, which is unecessary. I wanted to get rid of Vista and return to XP but the XP disc would not install because of multiple errors, such as missing ntldr.

At the recovery console, I've tried the following:- chkdsk ("The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems.")- bootcfg ("There are currently no boot entries available to display.")- fixboot ("The boot sector cannot be fixed.")
- expand from CD ("The specified file was not found."- repair installation (It won't even begin. Error as soon as I select the partition C:)
Windows XP .I am trying desparately to enlarge my c drive, which is partitioned from a large drive also containing f (programs) and g (data) drives. I need to enlarge the c drive to allow proper cmptr operation.i used Partition magic , which seemed to work up until the point where it rebooted and gave me error 58 "unable to write to the boot sector. I unwisely surfed the web and seemed to have contracted another virus. Trend-micro's trial program doesn't seem to be able to locate the virus. Successfully installed once and ended up with corrupted files on the Win98 partition, so want to get it right this time. (Don't remember how I did the "successful" install - after several days of various problems - most of which are now solved - I am a little brain-dead.What I am looking for is a way to create an XP boot on the SATA drive. I assume this means changing the MBR.

Drives: 0 120gb SATA; 1 15GB IDE; 2 10GB IDE
Current Status:Win98 and WinXP both operational but no dual boot. Win98 was installed first. Both systems were a clean install. Both systems installed on FAT32 in seperate partitions on the SATA drive. Computer startup simply goes into Win98, as there is no XP boot sector on the proper drive......
I have a toshiba laptop running windows xp. It crashed yesterday and now whenever it boots it give me the following error A disk read error occurred Press ctl alt del to restart.I managed to get to the selection of boot in safe mode, but it still won't boot and then I get I/O error reading boot sector.At this point I just want to get the data off it. View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a five year old dell dimensions 8200. Three years ago, I added a 250 gig. D-drive. My computer has been so slow that I wanted to reinstall windows. So, erased and formatted my D-drive and put windows on it. I then added a program called "Wipe Drive" in order to erase my C-drive. (I was thinking to use my d-drive mainly and c-drive for backup). I closed my computer, then when I went to reboot, i first got the message "ntldr is missing press control alt delete." So, I did this. I soon did not get the ntlrd message and got a message saying failure to boot and press contol, alt, delete to restart. I tried to instal windows again and it did not boot. I did the f2 thing and made sure my cd-rom was first. I did the f12 thing and tried to open cd. Nothing has worked to help boot or get to the blue screen that lets me choose drive.I think I erased important start up info on my c-drive.

For the moment I would also like to retain the old disc contents and the xp operating system. To try to do this I installed a second hard drive and cloned the old drive c: to the new drive f:. I created a dual boot computer by editing my boot.ini file so I could boot from either the c: or f: drive. I replaced my primary hard drive with a new drive and booted up in the f: drive. Then I cloned the f: drive back to the new c: drive creating a dual boot system. My concern now is that if I reinstall windows xp on the newly installed hard drive, the Dell installation disk will wipe out the operating system and the contents on the f: drive. Is there any way to retain the old system? I'd appreciate any help with this.

To do it without using the cd it has to copy the installation files to the computer and then run them. When setup does this it creates a new choice of an operating system to boot from called "Windows XP Setup." So now I have a Windows XP and a Windows XP setup. I've been in msconfig and looked at boot.ini but that didn't help

I have two computers, one I use for gaming, the other for school. Both computers had 60gb Maxtor (school with lots of room, gaming with about 10 gb free). My school HD took a powder (the evil clicky noise of doom), but I was able to back up my files prior to that. Me being a quick thinker, I decide to upgrade my gamer puter to a 120gb (don't wanna go too nutso, as I am considering building a much superior computer), and put the good 60 gb in my old Athlon 700. Problem? I cannot get Windows XP Home to complete install on my gamer computer. (Athlon 700 installed just fine with 'good' 60gb).Gamer Computer: Athlon 1800+, 512MB DDR Ram 2100, KR7A Raid MOBO, GeForce3 Ti 200 (128MB DDR RAM), SB Audigy 2(AGP).
It is a RAID mobo, but i do not use the raid functionality, I did not have a problem before(I have my HD and my 2 roms on ide now). I go through the install steps, and I get to the very very end, where it states you are about to start Windows XP, and then it hangs, and thats it.I have tried to ensure there are no conflicts, I pulled out my sound card as well as my network card, and 're-seated' my video card and RAM. I have tried looking at using a winxp bootup floppy, booted into safe mode (the only error it detects is the missing RAID, no conflicts detected there). Heck, I even swapped out mouse and keyboard. I tried putting back the good 60gb back in the pc, and reformatting, but still get the same thing(sometimes the screen is black, sometimes the icky blue of xp, but that's it).I have no idea now. I did make sure that my bios was up to date before taking down the system originally, and it was, so no change was made there. Even swapped out the ribbon cables to ensure nothing was damaged on original removal.
I am having a problem on my dell laptop insprion 8100, its running windows xp.The last few days it keeps resetting itself, I then get an option to upload a report which I do, I then get an error message I have tried loads of things now, virus checks, dell system check disks, and reformatted & then replaced windows still no luck, I thought it must ne a virus.
I have searched and read a few people thought it was firefox but I have not even placed that back onto the computer but it still resets. I do see a blue screen b4 hand but can't read what's on it before the laptop resets. I hope someone can help as everything pointed to hardware but the dell disks pointing to software
I recently upgraded to the Norton Anti-Virus 2005 edition. I have always trusted this Anti-Virus program but it turned off the windows XP firewall and they tell me that I don't need it with their 2005 version because worms, hackers, viruses etc. are stopped through their program. View 7 Replies View RelatedI have been having trouble with a potential virus ever since I visited a google link where instead of a page loading IE crashed. Spybots teatime gave me a bunch of popups about changed entries which I was forced to accept. Since then I've had adspyware reappear over and over. Ad-aware detected it and removed it, but clearly not the underlying problem. System been running slow. I was in a game where I shut down a bunch of background programs including avg antivirus,teatime & zonealarm to free up resources. When I shut down teatime it gave me a bunch of messages about blocked changes. These set of popups had to be forceably closed. Then my system was running at a crawl. So I exited the game and restarted my PC. Now after the XP loading screen I get a black screen with no hdd light/activity. No save mode variation works either.(or previous working configeration etc) Fortunately I had win98 duel booted for older games. If a virus has caused this problem, its undetectable by many a antivirus program. Maybe some rootkit thing? What do I do? Hijackthis only checks the OS it runs under and I can only run win98. BTW, can't reinstall XP because I lost the CD. Assuming what ever rootkit virus wouldnt still be there to prevent loading anyways.
View 10 Replies View RelatedMy themes were all working fine but one unfortunate day i was installing one of the themes and it asked me to reboot from then on am not able to use any of the downloaded themes but i can use the themes i had installed prior to that i can use the themes i installed after that fatal installation. now the problems am facing are if i double click on a windows visual style file the themes (normally a window open with a preview of the theme) i dont get the preview of the new theme but the preview of the previously applied theme. If at all i save all the windows visual file to default themes folder and the go to properties->themes-> i just get a black box in center and if i apply that i get windows classic theme *the other problem is i get shrill noise which is unberable sometimes from the pc. i dunno how to rectify it.
