I recieved a virus and did a complete re-install of windows xp. Unfortunately I did not have a anti-virus program. I unwisely surfed the web and seemed to have contracted another virus. Trend-micro's trial program doesn't seem to be able to locate the virus. I also loaded spybot, ad-aware, and XoftSpySE, and they say I have many problems, but can't seem to fix them every time I run these programs

Built recording studio computer. Mobo Intel DP35 DP, Intel Core2, 4 GB ram,Geforce video card, M-Audio Delta sound card, Windows Xp home w/SP2 Had troubles with screen going blank every 15 minutes. Replaced screen, and video card and finally removed hard drive and formatted it to remove everything including OS. I cannot run a anti-virus because I don't know What the owner account password is, and I cannot login to the admin account. Any way of getting past this? (such as doing a install despite the virus or prhaps bypassing the login screen altogether)
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter a PSU failed and took my motherboard with it, I decided to build a new system and move my hard drive. Of course XP wouldn't boot. Since I didn't have an XP disc on hand (old system came with XP preloaded), I purchased Vista figuring I might be able to do an in-place upgrade (i could use 64-bit anyways). This didn't work as the Vista upgrade demanded to be started from within windows. I downloaded a clean version of XP w/ bittorrent and attempted a repair install. This seemed to go fine until setup restarted to complete the installation. Now XP restarts automatically on the loading screen and if I start in safe mode, I get the message "Windows XP Setup cannot run under Safemode."

I am planning to reformat my desktop this weekend. I currently have Windows ME,upgraded to Windows XP Home. I would like to buy the complete Windows XP Home (with SP2) so I can have a nice clean (and hopefully easy!) reformatting experience. Am I allowed to sell my old Windows XP Home "Upgrade" software to else on Ebay I have all the cumentation and serial numbers. View 1 Replies View RelatedI cannot seem to install SP2. Every time I try, it freezes up somewhere in the middle. I just tried last night, and it never made it past the first message. Something like "Initializing installation". It doesn't sound like the hard drive is doing anything. When I try to cancel the install, it will then freeze on the "Cancelling Installation" message. The only way out is to "End Task". The furthest I got was one time when it seemed to finish installing, but when it rebooted, my system was at 640 x 480 resolution, and still at SP1! I then ran a System Restore and got back to where I originally was, minus a bunch of security patches, even though the point I restored should have already had those patches
Notes:
-When trying to install, I let it run OVERNIGHT, so it has plenty of time to work.)
-System is clean of Spyware, Viruses, etc.
-System performance is pretty good, although I do get an occasional blue screen, hence the reason I'm finally trying to update.
Does anyone have any idea how to troubleshoot this?

I've restarted it a lot of times but in the "Installing Windows" section when it says setup will approximately complete in 25 mintues it starts "copying files", I get this "copy error" "Setup cannot copy the file licwmi.dl_.Ensure that the disk labeled 'Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 1 CD' is in the drive section below, or provide the location where the file can be found."

The system had some problems, it has to be returned to the manufacturer on an RMA, and they re-installed Windows XP Pro circa December 2007. When I got the machine back it needed many Windows updates. The first was SP3, then there were 41 OS updates, and 9 hardware and other updates. The install process got to #46 of 50, KB951847 (Updated for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5). The screen had not moved for an hour at that point but the same screen remained. I canceled the install, it reported immediately that cancellation was taking place, and then it stopped. No indication it was rolling back the updates.
View 2 Replies View RelatedOK, I downloaded Diskkeeper premium the other night and it ran through my disk and defragged. Later, the system (running slow) so I uninstalled it. Still ran terrible. Did a system restore and upon booting, XP couldn't find ntoskrnl.exe. I never could get xp back up and going into the recovery console from the XP setup disk showed the windows folder was empty. I'm guessing the system restore wiped it and didn't complete reloading the contents which is why it was empty. I pulled the drive and hooked it up to another system as a second drive and was able to get some vital data files but most that
I needed were corrupt and wouldn't copy.i put the drive back in the machine it was in, started a fresh install of XP sp2 and it loads all files and when it starts windows to do the install, it hangs at 33 minutes remaining. Changed the drive and started with another good drive. Same thing. Got another XP sp2 disk in case some files were corrupt on the original although I had used it many times prior with no problem. Still the same thing. Gets to 33 minutes remaining on the install and just never gets any farther
Started the pc w/the XP Home SP2 cd in, and followed prompts to do a repair install. All was going well. Got to the point of it needing to restart the computer. After the Windows logo appeared, received STOP error 7E, with no driver mentioned. (1st variable if needed is 0x0000006). Turned machine off, restarted. Same thing. Tried again, this time trying Safe Mode. I get the message "Setup cannot continue in Safe Mode, Click OK to restart".

I have two computers, one I use for gaming, the other for school. Both computers had 60gb Maxtor (school with lots of room, gaming with about 10 gb free). My school HD took a powder (the evil clicky noise of doom), but I was able to back up my files prior to that. Me being a quick thinker, I decide to upgrade my gamer puter to a 120gb (don't wanna go too nutso, as I am considering building a much superior computer), and put the good 60 gb in my old Athlon 700. Problem? I cannot get Windows XP Home to complete install on my gamer computer. (Athlon 700 installed just fine with 'good' 60gb).Gamer Computer: Athlon 1800+, 512MB DDR Ram 2100, KR7A Raid MOBO, GeForce3 Ti 200 (128MB DDR RAM), SB Audigy 2(AGP).
It is a RAID mobo, but i do not use the raid functionality, I did not have a problem before(I have my HD and my 2 roms on ide now). I go through the install steps, and I get to the very very end, where it states you are about to start Windows XP, and then it hangs, and thats it.I have tried to ensure there are no conflicts, I pulled out my sound card as well as my network card, and 're-seated' my video card and RAM. I have tried looking at using a winxp bootup floppy, booted into safe mode (the only error it detects is the missing RAID, no conflicts detected there). Heck, I even swapped out mouse and keyboard. I tried putting back the good 60gb back in the pc, and reformatting, but still get the same thing(sometimes the screen is black, sometimes the icky blue of xp, but that's it).I have no idea now. I did make sure that my bios was up to date before taking down the system originally, and it was, so no change was made there. Even swapped out the ribbon cables to ensure nothing was damaged on original removal.
I am having a problem on my dell laptop insprion 8100, its running windows xp.The last few days it keeps resetting itself, I then get an option to upload a report which I do, I then get an error message I have tried loads of things now, virus checks, dell system check disks, and reformatted & then replaced windows still no luck, I thought it must ne a virus.
I have searched and read a few people thought it was firefox but I have not even placed that back onto the computer but it still resets. I do see a blue screen b4 hand but can't read what's on it before the laptop resets. I hope someone can help as everything pointed to hardware but the dell disks pointing to software
I recently upgraded to the Norton Anti-Virus 2005 edition. I have always trusted this Anti-Virus program but it turned off the windows XP firewall and they tell me that I don't need it with their 2005 version because worms, hackers, viruses etc. are stopped through their program. View 7 Replies View RelatedI have been having trouble with a potential virus ever since I visited a google link where instead of a page loading IE crashed. Spybots teatime gave me a bunch of popups about changed entries which I was forced to accept. Since then I've had adspyware reappear over and over. Ad-aware detected it and removed it, but clearly not the underlying problem. System been running slow. I was in a game where I shut down a bunch of background programs including avg antivirus,teatime & zonealarm to free up resources. When I shut down teatime it gave me a bunch of messages about blocked changes. These set of popups had to be forceably closed. Then my system was running at a crawl. So I exited the game and restarted my PC. Now after the XP loading screen I get a black screen with no hdd light/activity. No save mode variation works either.(or previous working configeration etc) Fortunately I had win98 duel booted for older games. If a virus has caused this problem, its undetectable by many a antivirus program. Maybe some rootkit thing? What do I do? Hijackthis only checks the OS it runs under and I can only run win98. BTW, can't reinstall XP because I lost the CD. Assuming what ever rootkit virus wouldnt still be there to prevent loading anyways.
View 10 Replies View RelatedMy themes were all working fine but one unfortunate day i was installing one of the themes and it asked me to reboot from then on am not able to use any of the downloaded themes but i can use the themes i had installed prior to that i can use the themes i installed after that fatal installation. now the problems am facing are if i double click on a windows visual style file the themes (normally a window open with a preview of the theme) i dont get the preview of the new theme but the preview of the previously applied theme. If at all i save all the windows visual file to default themes folder and the go to properties->themes-> i just get a black box in center and if i apply that i get windows classic theme *the other problem is i get shrill noise which is unberable sometimes from the pc. i dunno how to rectify it.

I fixed the registry(Norton instructions) and cleaned everything else. When windows XP Pro starts, I get a message that "sysinit32z.exe cannot be found. Everthing's working fine now from what I can tell, except sound. the troublshooting provided by windows so far hasn't turned up anything and the updating from windows' site hasn't helped either. my control panel says that only my usb device is being read although the speaker system is hooked up exactly as before.

It says:
Network Boot Protocol --- PXE
Boot Order --- Use BIOS boot order
And when I try to change either of those settings it says: "There are no other choices for this option"

I recently decided to switch from Windows XP to Windows 2000, since XP is very slow on my old computer. I did a fresh install, on a fresh partition of my completely blank 20 gig hard drive. All went well. I installed the drivers for my SATA PCI controller and my network card.As soon as I plugged in my ethernet cable (I have 1.5 MB DSL service), I started getting popup windows giving me links to fake virus scanning sites, saying my system has critical errors, etc. I know this is all fake. I ignored it at first, but then they just kept coming. It's not just the same message, either; I see about 10 different ones popping up every few minutes or so.
