Disc Won't Boot - No Boot Sector On Hard Disk?

Jan 19, 2009

I have just recently gotten a new computer which came with Vista. Previously what I have done with any new operating system I got was installed it into my old computer. However, I came to find out you can only have one computer assigned to each cd, unless I wanna buy another one, which is unecessary. I wanted to get rid of Vista and return to XP but the XP disc would not install because of multiple errors, such as missing ntldr.

Boot Sector Gone With New Install

Mar 27, 2010

Bought a new copy of XP with service pac 3 to put on a p4 with a western digital 300 gig hd. I came back to check to see if the formatting was complete and I had the message "a disk read error has occurred press ctl+alt+del to restart".And when I tell it to boot from cdrom xp disk, it starts "setup is imspecting your computer's hardware configuration" and the screen goes blank after a few seconds and it stops doing anything. I'm afraid the mistake I made was deleting the boot sector partition.

More Unrecoverable - Boot Sector Can]t Be Fixed

Aug 11, 2007

Browsed these forums and others, tried various solutions, and I can't find anything that's helping me out.I'm running Windows XP Home on a laptop, and when it attempts to boot, it tells me that hal.dll is missing or corrupt. To correct this, I put in my Windows XP CD, and I can get it to the recovery console just fine. At the recovery console, I've tried the following:- chkdsk ("The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems.")- bootcfg ("There are currently no boot entries available to display.")- fixboot ("The boot sector cannot be fixed.")
- expand from CD ("The specified file was not found."- repair installation (It won't even begin. Error as soon as I select the partition C:)

Virus Damaged The Boot Sector - F8 Doesn't Work

Dec 27, 2007

I have a dell PC with windows XP Media Center installed. I think that a virus damaged the boot sector in fact I cannot start my PC.

All I am able to get to is the BIOS or the diagnostics tool, F8 doesn't work, which means I cannot restart in safe mode or last known good configuration and if I use alt+F11, which is the option you have on Dell PC to reformat it in order to have everything the way it was at the time you bought it, it doesn't work.

A friend of mine told me to boot from the CD and then use the fixboot command, the problem is that DELL does not give OS CDs anymore and I honestly do not know what to do

SATA - Systems Installed On FAT32 - Create Boot Sector

Dec 18, 2005

SATA Drive not recognized as boot drive on XP installation.Need to create an Xp boot sector.I have been working on this for days. Successfully installed once and ended up with corrupted files on the Win98 partition, so want to get it right this time. (Don't remember how I did the "successful" install - after several days of various problems - most of which are now solved - I am a little brain-dead.What I am looking for is a way to create an XP boot on the SATA drive. I assume this means changing the MBR.
System: MotherB: Asus A7V600 with VIA Chipset
Drives: 0 120gb SATA; 1 15GB IDE; 2 10GB IDE
Current Status:Win98 and WinXP both operational but no dual boot. Win98 was installed first. Both systems were a clean install. Both systems installed on FAT32 in seperate partitions on the SATA drive. Computer startup simply goes into Win98, as there is no XP boot sector on the proper drive......

Errors - Off And Back On And No Boot

Aug 15, 2007

The latest error I'm getting is this. Sorry it's so big but it's a photo of the screen. This is happening virtually every time I try and load in any programs to Windows. If I use Windows restore to roll back to before the program installation then it becomes stable again (usually).Windows update, spyware scans and antivirus etc. Left the machine doing a virus scan over night and next morning it was locked up. Turned it off and back on, and no boot. No hard drives found. So located and reinstalled SATA drivers, and then managed to see the hard drives, but just after POST the machine fell down and restarted. With the help of some other tech guys I managed to use ERD to get onto the install, and tried to use Windows restore, but it told me I needed Service Pack 2 and wouldn't.

Very Slow Boot Up - Disk Errors

Mar 3, 2007

All of a sudden, my computer is taking about 5 minutes to fully boot up. Before, it took less than a minute to do so. I checked out the Event Viewer and I saw a bunch of disk errors which said, "The deviceDeviceHarddisk 1D has a bad block". D was a partition on my secondary drive. So I performed a chkdsk on it. It found no problems. I used Fix-it Utilities 7 to test it. No problems found. Still taking 5 minutes to boot up and getting the same disk D error events. I swept my system for spyware and malware with Spy Sweeper, Spyware Doctor and Ad-Aware. No problems found. Still taking 5 minutes to boot up and getting the same disk D error events

System Won't Boot Past Splash Screen - No Errors

Feb 24, 2007

I'm working on a Compaq Deskpro EN500 running Windows XP Professional SP2 (with all patches and updates), current antivirus and antispyware, and firewall. The system was working fine, user was online browsing the web when the system froze. The mouse froze, etc. Start button could not be accessed. The user shut down the system with the power button. When he turned it back on, he was greeted with the standard Microsoft 'an error has occured' screen' and given the choices of Safe Mode

Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Good
Start Windows Normally

When I choose any of these, I can get as far as the Windows XP splash screen and then the system seizes. I can get into the Windows Recovery Console. I have run a CHKDSK /P /R and a FIXBOOT. CHKDSK returns no errors. I'm not sure what to try next short of a rebuild.

Boot Up - Errors Found Check Disk Can't Continue Read

Aug 26, 2009

When I boot up my computer, I get several messages from Windows which read this way: "[insert file with a .exe extension here] - Corrupt File The file or directory C:WINDOWSsystem32UACmqiemusiwu.dll is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility." This message comes up every time that I try to run an executable file and seems to prevent some of them from running altogether. I can run Chkdsk in Safe Mode, but after it completes file verification it says "Errors found. CHKDSK cannot continue in read only mode." I have a virus (Total Security 2009) that is preventing the computer from displaying the command prompt in regular mode, but the programs that I need to get ride of the virus are all executable and cant be installed because of this glitch. Any help with what this file UACmqiemusiwu.dll is or how to fix it would be great. I've tried deleting it, but the computer won't let me because it is corrupt and unreadable.

Deleting Files

Nov 23, 2005

I have been trying to delete an old Windows file on one of my hard disks, but i never could because of the "access denied" error message. No matter what i did, they couldn't be deleted. So finally, i stumpled across a site that explained that the files need to have the right "ownership" to delete. So, i follow the instructions and set me as the owner, but it will only do that to one folder. I then have to go one by one and set the properties for each sub-folder seperatley, and there's hundreds of them. Is there any way to delete all of the files without regard to what user owns them? Or how can i make ALL files AND subfolders be set at once

Deleting Partitions?

Nov 10, 2007

Hey there, i'm currently running on Windows XP with a 120 gig Maxtor Harddrive. During my last reformat I'm guessing I did it wrong and mistakenly made a second partition while leaving the old one intact. I've checked through all my biggest storage heaps for what could be causing my HD to be so full. But my multimedia section is only 28 gigs, whereas the harddrive is showing 85 gigs worth of used space.
Multiple partitions is the only thing I can think of. So is there a way I could find out if I have an extra partition, which one is the right one to delete, and the process of deleting it, possibly without having to transfer all my files. Any help would be appreciated.
