May 24, 2008After a current power outage, my screen came up blue with the following information: unmountable_boot_volume..blue screen reads:if problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software(nothing new or added). disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disale compnents, restart you computer, press F8 to select advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.All this has been tried and the blue screen continues to come up.

Sep 29, 2007I haven't fully rebooted in a week or so, mostly hiberating and that works just fine. I rebooted just today and encountered a blue screen of death indicating something about: "BOOT VOLUME UNMOUNTABLE" For the past 6 hours I've been reading all about this and the related problem: "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable." Apparently my disk got corrupted somehow.
It's apparently not as simple as BOOT.INI being bad as is said to be a common problem. My problem seems very severe in the following way: I actually have another Windows XP installation on the same computer. It still works fine as does linux. However, if I try to access the other partition/drive (called e: in the other windows) then I get: "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable."

Oct 29, 2006i was on my computer just doing nothing when suddenly i got the blue screen of death! i have not recently installed any hardware OR software, to my knowledge ...and now windows will not let me in - same blue screen every time. does anyone know what this is, and how i can possibly fix it on my own without having to pay a ton of money i don't have for a tech to come to me? a phone tech suggested it might be a spyware issue. if you think so, can you possibly recommend a program that i can buy on CD and is bootable (that i can run while booting up, since that is where the problem is occurring)?

Feb 4, 2005My computer was working fine this morning, I didn't download anything or do anything different, just normal web searching. As I'm loading a web page, the computer freezes. I Cntrl Alt Dlt and nothing, so I turn off my computer and turn in back on, it reboots to the Win screen where you sign in as an identity, I enter my password and it freezes. Again, I have to reboot the computer manually, and it freezes at the Compaq screen that comes on when you first turn on the computer. I turned off the comp, opened it, removed my fan, blew it out a bit, removed the processor and reseated it (in the process, reseated it incorrectly and bent a far corner prong, attempted to straighten w/tweezers, and ultimately BROKE it off...DOH!). I wasn't sure if the broken prong would have a big effect, so I reseated it correctly, reseated my memory, and tried again, same thing, just hangs at the Compaq screen

Alright, last night, the power went out while i was on the computer. When the power comes back on, i get a blue screen saying
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
I absolutely CANNOT get past this screen, i've tried booting in safe mode, and still get nothing. I've tried TONS of commands from the recovery console. When I load up the console it asks me to choose either D:MiniNT (Which i believe is not what i use) and D:I386 I've tried the following commands on BOTH d:MininNT and D:I386
chkdsk /r
chkdsk /f
chkdsk /p
fixboot
fixmbr
I've tried them all, and i get the exact same error, i was on the phone with a good friend whos a comp technician and he had no answers, then I phoned the mobo company, still no answers. I've tried unplugging my HDD, still nothing. I am TOTALLY lost!! could someone

Jul 17, 2005when I turned on my computer and got the blue screen of death, so I restarted my PC. Then a black screen came up saying "Windows could not start beacuse the following file is missing or corrupt : windowssystem32configsystem."
You can attempt to repair this file by putting the winxp cd in etc...
Now when i turn on my computer there is just a black screen showing, with nothing at all on it.
Any ideas?

Nov 12, 2009Encountered a Blue Screen of Death error. The error stated that I should run Chkdsk and then proceeds to restart and bring me to the Windows boot selection screen (safe mode, last known good configuration, normally). No matter which choice I pick, it always leads to the BSOD then restarts. Since this is getting me nowhere fast, I want to just format and reinstall windows. I do not have my recovery CDs, and when I enter the BIOS to change the boot sequence I cannot change it so the CD drive is above the hard drive in priority. The reason it gives me in the bios is that "All items on this menu cannot be modified in user mode. If any items require changes, please consult your system supervisor. Any ideas on how I can boot off the cd and reinstall windows from scratch?

Dec 26, 2004I originally had XP Pro when the problem first started. When booting, the normal boot screen will come up with the "compaq" logo and F1 for setup f10 for restore, and then normally proceeds to the windows xp pro screen with the scrolling bar at the bottom. Now on boot, this bar will stay scrolling acting like it is trying to boot and it takes literally anywhere from 6 hours to 3 days to start up. I used restore points and the same thing happened. When I start in safe mode, the normal safe mode multidisk prompt comes up and even that will stay on winsys32driversagp330.sys for the same amount of hours before it finally boots up. I also reinstalled my windows xp.

Jun 12, 2007I have quite a complicated problem. It started when my house lost power and my PC consequently powered down. Since then, whenever I start the machine, its reboots instead of showing the Windows (XP) login screen. I tried booting to Safe Mode or a command prompt with the same results. I ran a memory checker which found nothing. I ran CHKDSK (from the recovery console off the XP CD) and still experienced the same rebooting problems. I then tried to do a repair install of XP. The installation was going smoothly until I started getting errors saying �Setup cannot copy file�� with multiple .dll and .xsl files unalble to copy. Presented with the option to browse for the files myself, I did and found them right there on the disc in the proper folder, but they still would not copy. I even was able to run a virus scan from within the browse window of the installation (thanks to the �Scan with VirusScan� option McAffee embeds in the right-click menu) and still came up with nothing. So, needless to say, XP did not install because the files would not copy.
But wait, there�s more. Now with an incomplete copy if XP on my HD I consistently get the Blue Screen of Death upon booting to the hard drive. This made sense to me because I had an incomplete copy of Windows I was trying to boot to. But then I tried to boot to my XP disc and I still got the blue screen. I was able to get into the recovery console, but it froze after I entered the admin password. If I tried to do a repair install, it froze upon my selection of that option.

Mar 1, 2005i have a problem with my computer , it wont boot to windows xp just say it find can't find operating system and the hard drive is kind of clicking everytime it tried to boot.
sometimes it will try to boot but then i will get blue screen.
is there any way i can save some of the file to another computer some how or onto the cd writer.
because xp doesn't support dos then i don't know how to do this.

Apr 21, 2008When i turn on my computer I get the windows splash screen, then a blue screen that says Please Wait, followed by dots. The Windows logo is in the top right corner. Windows stays at this screen for a few minutes, then it goes to the log in screen. I believe that during the Please wait screen Windows is running chkdsk. Does anyone know how to turn this off? I am running Windows XP Home Edition SP2.

Didn't Boot And Went To Blue Screen
Jan 16, 2007I just started my Dell the other day and as the subject says, it didn't boot and went to a blue screen which said something along the lines of.it gave me options to start in Safe mode and a few others or to start at the last point where everything was ok. I choose this option and windows started without a hitch and I didn;t notice anything out of place or missing. I've done a few restarts since then and nothing out of the ordinary has happened since.BUT, then today I was loading some more programs on my recently formatted laptop. One of them being Perfect Disk 8 (trial) and WinPatrol alerted me to the startup entries. One of them being PDEngine, the other PDAgent. I'm assuming Perfect Disk caused this error on the Dell. Anyone have any Idea as to what may have happened. now I'm afraid to use the program on either comp.

Jan 7, 2008I have a Sony laptop - PCG-Z1RSP with windows XP. I was using the internet when suddenly it shut down. Now i can't boot it up - as soon as it gets to the loading up windows part the deaded blue screen appears but only for a split second and then laptop restarts. This is very worrying. My problem is that most of the time when I make a change (Install a new program, or uninstall an existing one), then at the next boot, I get a "Blue Screen of Death". I can then boot again and the computer boots fine when I select "Boot Normal". Occasionally I have to boot into "Safe" mode, and then reboot. Then everything boots normally until I again make a change as described above. This does not happen every time a change is made, but happens only after such a circumstance. I assume that it cannot be an existing driver causing the problem, or I would get the blue screen every time, and rebooting would not "fix" the problem. I have checked the boot log, and have not found anything.

Dec 22, 2008About 2-3 weeks ago my computer started playing up, i switched it on and it came up with disk boot failure, so i restarted the computer and it started up fine.. a few days later i got a blue screen message, didn't have enough time to read it, ever since the computer starts up to disk boot failure and i restart and it works, i do that every day to use it. Today however i restarted and it was freezing, wouldn't let me into BIOS setup, or anything, but after a few restarts it worked again.. about 10minutes ago the computer came up with a blue screen as i left the room, i didn't have enough time to see all of it but i got, 0x000000f4 (0x00000003 couldnt get the rest, and something about physical memory dump. i had to restart again about 3 or 4 times before it worked, and when i got through the computer froze.
