Nov 29, 2009I was surfing the internet and all of a sudden my screen just went blue, now it won't boot and just shows a blue screen that says unbootable mount volume.

May 24, 2008After a current power outage, my screen came up blue with the following information: unmountable_boot_volume..blue screen reads:if problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software(nothing new or added). disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disale compnents, restart you computer, press F8 to select advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.All this has been tried and the blue screen continues to come up.

Sep 29, 2007I haven't fully rebooted in a week or so, mostly hiberating and that works just fine. I rebooted just today and encountered a blue screen of death indicating something about: "BOOT VOLUME UNMOUNTABLE" For the past 6 hours I've been reading all about this and the related problem: "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable." Apparently my disk got corrupted somehow.
It's apparently not as simple as BOOT.INI being bad as is said to be a common problem. My problem seems very severe in the following way: I actually have another Windows XP installation on the same computer. It still works fine as does linux. However, if I try to access the other partition/drive (called e: in the other windows) then I get: "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable."

Oct 29, 2006i was on my computer just doing nothing when suddenly i got the blue screen of death! i have not recently installed any hardware OR software, to my knowledge ...and now windows will not let me in - same blue screen every time. does anyone know what this is, and how i can possibly fix it on my own without having to pay a ton of money i don't have for a tech to come to me? a phone tech suggested it might be a spyware issue. if you think so, can you possibly recommend a program that i can buy on CD and is bootable (that i can run while booting up, since that is where the problem is occurring)?

Apr 1, 2007I need to reinstall XP on my current hard drive (160 Gig 5400 RPM Maxtor) due to a failure of xp to boot. First however, I would like to copy over my old files so I don't lose them when I eventually reformat this drive. At my disposal I have 1 working laptop, 1 300 Gig External 3.5 USB 2.0 HD and 2 40 Gig 2.5 (Laptop HD) and USB 2.0 external laptop drive enclosure, Windows XP Install Disc. I have ran scandsk /p (1 error found) and tried running the recovery console. My idea is to use one the 40 gig hard drives for a new install of windows and put the unbootable drive in the external enclosure to copy my files over however on my working computer, I don't believe it is that easy... If I remember correctly, you cannot just copy files off a once bootable hard drive?

I guess at this point i should have sent it to a technician!...anyway i found a number of forum posts with the same problem and followed the instructions to do 'chkdsk' from MS DOS. This looked to be doing stuff.... but now... instead of a blue screen I get nothing...the screen just goes blank!
Need To Mount Compressed ZIP Disk
Jun 9, 2005I am running Windows XP, Home Edition, to which is connected a 250MB external ZIP drive. My previous system used Windows 98, and, in a moment of madness, I compressed one of the ZIP drive disks. I realize that I need to remount the disk, using the Windows "Drivespace three" program. The only problem is that I don't have the program, and, to my knowledge, it does not exist in or for Windows XP. Is there any way I can obtain a copy of the Drivespace Three program, and, if so, will it run under Windows XP? If not, what version of Windows 95 or 98 has the program? I have access to an older system, belonging to a friend, and might possibly be able to use it to solve the problem.

Jul 18, 2005running XP Pro SP2. Have a 2.5" HDD from a Toshiba Laptop (XP Home SP1 / FAT32) that I have in a USB case. The case plugs into the USB port of Desktop computer and hey presto.should be able to access the drive. However Cannot see the drive in Windows Explorer. Have gone into disk manager and the drive is showing but there is no drive letter assigned and no way of doing so. Option is greyed out on right-click over drive. I have tried changing the drive letter of the cd/dvd drive. I have no mapped drives that could complicate matters. Have tried re-scanning drives no joy. Have even tried uninstalling Enhanced USB2 Host. no joy.

-Geforce FX 5200

Alright, last night, the power went out while i was on the computer. When the power comes back on, i get a blue screen saying
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
I absolutely CANNOT get past this screen, i've tried booting in safe mode, and still get nothing. I've tried TONS of commands from the recovery console. When I load up the console it asks me to choose either D:MiniNT (Which i believe is not what i use) and D:I386 I've tried the following commands on BOTH d:MininNT and D:I386
chkdsk /r
chkdsk /f
chkdsk /p
fixboot
fixmbr
I've tried them all, and i get the exact same error, i was on the phone with a good friend whos a comp technician and he had no answers, then I phoned the mobo company, still no answers. I've tried unplugging my HDD, still nothing. I am TOTALLY lost!! could someone

Nov 30, 2007My Dell Inspiron 2650 laptop on boot-up consistently gives a blue screen with ERROR (0X000000ED (0X81ACA988, 0XC0000006,0X00000000,0X00000000). I have read most of your fixes BUT in my case no matter what I do it ALWAYS boots to this screen. Trying to boot to Safe Mode results in a list of drivers prefixed by ?multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)c:windowsdriver.sys etc The machine will not boot from Floppy or CD and I?ve tried every combination of boot sequence under the F12 menu. In the BIOS it will not allow me to change any relevant settings, only the ?system date?, ?system time? and ?quiet boot?.and I cannot select the dropdown menu items either. Booting under Normal Startup, I see the Windows Logo and all that, but then the blue screen appears. I?ve tried removing the hard disk to get it to boot to floppy, removing the battery (which is totally dead), memory module, etc. Only thing left I think is to sling it in the Caribbean Ocean and go drink a bottle of rum.

Nov 7, 2007i would be patient and it would go away. at first i noticed that while using msn messenger, its volume control for voice chat controled the main volume for the whole pc. so if it was low things wouldnt sound as high as i wanted. no matter if i adjusted the main volume in the control panel, which was always set to highest, the volume would still be at the mercy of msn m. so if it was lower than usual i would have to sign into msn m and adjust it. not only does this happen with msn m. it also happens with web video applications used by Internet, livevideo, etc etc! those arent usually the culprit of low sound. its usually just msn m.

beginning dump of physical memory dumping physical memory to disk: and counts up to 100 then the computer restarts. i was able to get into safe mode to try a system restore but when the computer restarted it never finished the install (it actually gave me the confirmation that the restore was successful while i was doing a repair install later on) i have tried going through the windows install disc repair utility and doing a chkdsk /p and a chkdsk /r upon doing /r it froze at 53 percent and did not move (i left it for a good 4 hours the first time before restarting it.. and then over night the second time.. and both times it never passed 53 percent............

Now when i turn on my computer there is just a black screen showing, with nothing at all on it.

The error stated that I should run Chkdsk and then proceeds to restart and bring me to the Windows boot selection screen (safe mode, last known good configuration, normally). No matter which choice I pick, it always leads to the BSOD then restarts. Since this is getting me nowhere fast, I want to just format and reinstall windows. I do not have my recovery CDs, and when I enter the BIOS to change the boot sequence I cannot change it so the CD drive is above the hard drive in priority. The reason it gives me in the bios is that "All items on this menu cannot be modified in user mode. If any items require changes, please consult your system supervisor. Any ideas on how I can boot off the cd and reinstall windows from scratch?

boot to Last Known Good Configuration - resulting in the same blue screen
boot to Safe Mode / Safe Mode with networking / Safe Mode with comman prompt - resulting in blank (black) screen with "Safe Mode" in the corners and moveable mouse test the hardware (hard drive / memory etc.) via build in PC Doctor - all seems to be working
i am able to use bootable XP CD from other machine to get into Recovery Console
i am able to boot to simple live XP using BartPE-XPE usb key and access the hard drive

When I start the computer, it asks if for the choice of Safe Mode, w/ Networking, w/Command Prompt or Normally.
I've tried them all and if I try it normally, it won't get past the XP loading screen. It's loading and then it flashes a blue screen for a second and then restarts the computer again.
I tried pressing F8 at boot and selected 'Disable automatic restart on system failure' and this is what I get
