View 11 Replies View RelatedI have a Compaq Presario Computer with windows XP on it. recently i started getting an error message which says lsass.exe and the computer doesnt go any further after I click on ok which is the only option there. It just goes to a blank black screen. someone mentioned to me that i should try to do a system restore on it through the safe mode, but that doesnt work either becasue same error comes even in safe mode. i have tons of data on this computer and i cannot afford to lose it. i need a way to recover my data. it seems to me that the only option i may have is ot do a system recovery through the cds that i got when i purchased the computer, is that true? someone also mentioned to me that if i have the Operating System CD then i might not have to do anything but just repair. How does this work?
I cannot seem to find the O.S cd, where can i get it from? Is it the same as the Windows XP cd? also, this problem has been occuring since a few days now and of course i havent been turning on the computer since there isnt much i can do, so by this problem just being there is it making it worse or not? i just dont have the time right now but does that mean that the problem just sitting there is harming it further? Some people have also told me of how to recover data using Ubuntu or something, how good is that? please help me in this asap.
I have a problem with a Compaq Presario running XP Home. I took the CD player out and cleaned out broken pieces of a CD that was destroyed in it. I got it cleaned out, put back together and now the pc won't boot up. I don't know what went wrong. Cleaning the CD player was quite easy and went back together okay. I hooked all of the wires up the way they were. On the front of this computer, there are two lights. One on the left which is green, and one on the right which is orange. Normally, when the power button is pushed, the green light comes on first, then the orange light comes on during the loading process. You can see the boot process on the monitor.
Now, after hooking it back up today, when the power button is pushed, the green light comes on, then the orange one comes on and goes back off after a moment. The green light stays on. Nothing at all shows up on the monitor, not even a blinking cursor -- it just stays blank. It stays that way indefinitely nothing. The monitor light is on so it is apparently getting power, but shows nothing. I'm sure the monitor is hooked up correctly; it can only be plugged in one way. While I had everything unhooked and was cleaning the CD player, I plugged the CD player back in for a moment and plugged in the power cord to the pc and pushed the power button. The power came on and allowed me to eject the empty tray. I did this to get the tray out of the way so I could clean beneath it. I tried to turn the power back off with the pc power button after ejecting the tray and it wouldn't seem to shut down.

View 2 Replies View RelatedSystem Restore problem I've been having.I did a system restore on my laptop and then got error messages when attempting to restore back to the present time) but as of just now I have a new, much more pressing problem. I restarted my laptop in safe mode an hour or so ago to attempt to do a system restore while in safe mode, just to see if that might work since I always get an error when trying to do a system restore normally.
The system restore loaded up and the blue progress bar got about 1/6th of the way across and then stopped. I let it load and after 45 minutes of absolutely no progress in starting up with the system restore, I manually shut down the computer. I turned it on again after a minute and it began to boot up, showed the HP logo, went black, then the Windows XP loading screen, went black, then the HP logo again, black again, Windows XP loading screen again, etc and just looped again and again. I let it continue this for about 15 minutes but it just kept looping. I pressed the F8 key while it was doing this and selected it to start in Safe Mode, only to have the same looping sequence continue again and again. I had to manually shut down the laptop again, and after attempting to turn it on and have it boot up a few more times I've run into nothing but more of the same endless looping process.
What can I do about this? What caused it and is there any way to fix it? I'd really like a way to access or save my data, which I can't do now since the computer is doing nothing but looping the boot sequence. i have Prof SP2
When my bios boot sequence is set to boot from CD, a 'press any key to boot from disk' sign should come up during boot-up.
It doesn't (it always used to when I set CD drive, not HD as first boot). I have not got the bios HD set as first boot, but have set it to boot from CD as first boot. When I boot up it goes straight to my HD / XP OS !
I need to boot from disk and I can't work out why the bios boot sequence I have set and saved is being ignored. My bios is not buggy and has never caused any problems until this issue. I have a MSI K9N Platinum mobo.
What would cause me to have to change my boot sequence everytime to get my computer to boot into windows ? When it restarts after I change the boot sequence it goes right into windows xp. I recently had a new hard drive and more memory put in the computer. It will not boot into windows xp until I go into my setup and change the boot sequence everytime. Then it will boot into windows. The computer is about 6 years old and windows xp was an upgrade to 98. Once the computer is in windows it works just fine. Changing the bood sequence everytime is a bummer.

I'm a big fan of trying to do things yourself before calling in the professionals. However because of this, I have been delegated to complete the task at hand. This is my nephew's computer that has been dropped off at my house to somehow get running again.

He said that one day he went to turn on the computer and it wouldn't fire up. I told him to come over to my house and I swapted my battery and still nothing. I then swapped power packs with no fix. I thought it might be a power supply problem or something like that but have not figured out how to open it up without breaking something.

I also have tried system restore, it takes me as far as choose your restore point & then it does nothing, just frezes there. I also have a d drive so i can restore it to manufactuary, when I first purchased my laptop. i don't know how to do this either. I'd rather not loose everything if possible.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI want to perform a Windows repair on a Compaq Presario desktop computer but the person doesn't have an OS CD. I think what Compaq does is put the setup files for windows on a seperate partition so you install it using their recovery console. However, if you do this then it reformats the hard drive no matter what. This is NOT what I want to do. So my question is, if I can get my hands on a Windows XP Home full install CD (The computer came with Home) and enter in the CD key that came on the side of the Compaq, will it work correctly?

After lots of installs, uninstalls, and other acquired crap after quite a few years of use, I'm planning on reformatting my computer (specs are in profile).I have a few simple questions which I hope you can answer. First, I have a single hard-drive that is split in two partitions: C: and D:. The D: has always been locked down as a "recovery" drive. Can I just reformat my computer from the D:?If not, a few years ago, I made a set of recovery disks using the recovery creator. I am unsure on this, but when I made the recovery disks, will it restore my computer to the point when I created them (hope not), or will it completely reformat everything (what I'm hoping for).I plan on doing a "destructive," clean install in order to completely reformat my computer to stock specifications.Lastly, can I upgrade straight from SP1 to SP3? Or do you recommend that I use something like Project Dakota (or RyanVM) to bring me up to spiff with SP2, then make the final jump to SP3?

View 6 Replies View RelatedThe laptop made some subtle clicking noises and would eventually crash after being on for 30 mins+. I noticed that avast didn't load during start up and when I scheduled a boot time scan, it wouldn't run. I decided to re-install Windows (XP SP3). I deleted everything on the drive and did a quick format. About half way through the installation process, I received a black screen that there is a "hard error." I tried again and received a blue screen that says Setup can't format the partition and that the drive may be damaged.I suspect it's a dead hard drive that's causing the problems...I was just hoping someone could confirm this. My uncle wants to keep the laptop and is willing to buy a new hard drive.but will it work? Also, I was able to access the bios and do the HDD self test and it checked out ok, which I thought was weird. Do I need to do the longer version?

I'm in dire need of the Windows XP expertise out there.I'm working on a Compaq Presario 2100 for a friend that she wants me to sell for her. When I got the laptop, it had XP Home Edition SP1 with no current anti-virus or anti-spyware software installed. She told me the machine wasn't working right and I'm sure you all can guess why.I believe I've removed all the viruses (1500 or so infected files) and spyware (about the same number of objects found as viral infected files, across Ad-Aware 1.06, SpyBot S&D 1.4, X-Cleaner (Free), and Spy Sweeper 3.5 trial) and the machine seems to be running fine. I've got SP2 installed and have all of the Windows updates installed. One thing I have NEVER been able to do is open the User Account Manager. I can double-click the icon in Control Panel and I get an hour-glass indicating it's trying to start and then nothing.
