Change Computers Registered Owner
Apr 10, 2008
Okay so the title of the thread is a bit misleading, because I was able to get in and change who my computer is registered to... However, When I go to save or open something on the desktop it still says C:Documents and Settings(the name that I used to have the computer registered to)Desktop etc etc... in the navigation bar, How do I get the computer to change that?

I bought a used laptop with microsoft xp pro. The name of the former owner is always showing on the top when I use internet explorer or outlook express... It's a nuisance but that's OK. Yesterday I installed a program and cannot use it because I have a message :the microsoft jet database engine cannot open the file, it is already opened exclusively by another user or you need pemission. How do I get permission, or how do I change the registry to remove the former owner?

If you want to change the owner and organization in System Properties, just do the following:
Open the registry and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersion
Now just change the value for RegisteredOwner and RegisteredOrganization.

I don't want my computer anymore, so I'm giving it to my mom. I changed my name on her name on the admin account. But in the "Windows Task Manager", under "Users", it still lists my name (not hers). And in the "System Properties", where it says "Registered To", it has my name.Other than re-installing the OS, is there anyway to change these two things to her name?Windows XP MCE

My new laptop came preinstalled with Windows XP. When it booted up, it asked me who would be using this computer, saying something about how it would create new profiles for them. I whimsically decided to enter "THE KING" (to be the admin) and "peasant" (for other users).
Apparently that was a bad idea because now it says the computer is registered to THE KING (for example, when you click My Computer, then properties). Is there any way to change it?

Since my dad got this computer for me years ago, his name has always been registered or whatever you call it that makes his name appear as the author of html and java files... and also be the name on the "C:Documents and Settings His Name Here Desktop...."
when I write a java class in eclipse, or html, it automatically says his name as the author at the top, and I have to change it. Any way I can change it more permanently? I dont think I can change the user folder under his name, because everything is installed there

My 'computer guy' installed WinXP Professional SP2 on my newly-constructed computer last week. I was disappointed to note that he registered the end-user license agreement under my nickname, rather than my given name, hich I would have preferred. Is there any way at this point to change the 'registered to' name to my correct name.

In viewing System Properties on my PC I see the display of
Registered to:
SJ
SJones
This information is the default for registering any new software which is installed.
How can I change this? I searched through regedit but have not found the exact location of this information.

First, I still have problem to set a folder to be private. It should be a VERY EAY task. But when I right click the Property of a folder on D: drive its "Make this private" check box is gray out.So I can NOT make a folder be private in D: drive.
It seem to me the private folders are private under "My Documents" in C: drive.
I read from Help, it says a drive MUST be NTFS
But I type
convert D: /fs:ntfs
It says my D drive already is NTFS format.
Since it already in NTFS, then why I can't
make it private?

Apparently this is a home built computer, and right now it doesn't even realise it has CD drives. The owner re-partitioned it and now all it has on it is DOS 6.2.
I try to use the 4 disk boot disks but I keep getting errors - file not found or corrupt, etc.

I have a used laptop and have removed all of the previous owner's data. I have created a new user. I have changed the owner's name in My Computer and in the registry. Everything works well and I can find all my new files in My Documents as I expect. However in C:Docs and Settings there is a folder with the old owner's name. XP will not let me rename it or delete it and says it is "a Windows system folder and is requred for Windows to run properly". Apparently some part of XP is still using some files/folders in the old owner's name folder. How can I get around this so I can clean up my disk and delete the old owner's folder?

About a year or so ago I had been using my home pc when I worked remotely. I've since been provided with a laptop and so my home pc is just my home pc. I removed all work based software and all references I could find to my company and yet my company shows up along with my name whenever I install new software.

I want to delete the company name in the SYSTEM PROPERTIES > REGISTERED TO field. I figure there must be a registry key that holds the info? Can I just delete the key and re-enter my name? The name itself is right, but some ninny who worked on my computer must've entered my old company name. It's annoying.

How can I check with Microsoft online to see if a copy of Windows XP Professional has been previously used and registered? I have the CD, the original box complete with the PRODUCT KEY.Explanation:I bought what was supposed to be a NEW and UNUSED copy of Windows XP Professional on Amazon.com through a 3rd party seller. When I got the software the box looked like it was indeed new and still sealed. However, when I opened it, it had some writing on the CD that leads me to beleive it has been previously used.I would like to check online to see if this copy has been previously REGISTERED with MS.

It then churns a percentage thing fro 0 to 100% and then I end up on the normal download page which I was on before, I hit "express - recommended" and I get the message "files required.........." again. And thus it never ends. After spending money on Microsofts premium call line I am told to contact Acer

My owner account (where most of my files are) has been magically changed to "account unknown" under the System Properties/Advanced/User Profiles. I "see" the "Account Unknown" listed, but I am unable to access it. I tried signing in as the administrator, but no luck. I checked Windows help online, but no luck. I called Sony Vaio support, (support?), no luck. I am running XP Home Edition SP2 will all updates. I have found out that the files aren't gone, according to online readings, but getting to them is another matter. I'm a minister and all of my sermons funerals baptisms etc. are connected with the "Owner" profile.
