When trying to save a word or excel document into a network folder I get the following error: Cannot save 'filename'. The folder is marked 'Read Only'.Does anyone know why this is happening? Even if i try to save to my desktop, then copy and paste it into the network folder i get the error that it cannot be copied.

What is the difference in copying verses moving a file to the shared document folder? I would thing that by copying it, one is "duplicating" it and thereby using up resources. Clicking the X on the left pane or click off the Floders button on the tool bar changes the folders view to the Windows XP style folder view. Then going to Tools>Folders Options and cklicing the View tab, then clicking on the button, Apply to All Folders does not apply this change to all folders and resets the folder back to what it was before I made the change.

I have one question. Is it possible to save the order of my music folders (and files!) in My Music folder. What I mean is that I'm going to transfer all of my music (55 GB) on external HDD and then back to freshly installed Windows 7. And what I would like is that my order of folder is sorted as I did it in Win XP, and NOT by alphabetical order or something else. I have really huge collection and organizing it like it is now would be a nightmare. I do not want music to be sorted like: ATB, Coldplay, Linkin Park, Trance; but in my order (like Coldplay, Linkin Park, ATB, Trance). I wonder if thumbs.db hidden file has to do something with order of the icons (I guess not ) So is it possible or not?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a new pc freshly installed with XP SP3. I used it as a server, I shared the two harddrives and mapped them as drive F and G on the network. The sharing and mapping is successfull, however, after a few minutes of being started (or after the pc has been restarted), the sahred folders and harddrives were self-disconnected for unknown reasons. My colleage timed it, and the sharing lasts only 15 minutes after restart then it is disonnected from the network. When i say disconnected - i mean i can't be seen from other PC's connected to the network, i need to restart the pc (again and again) in order for the harddrive and folder sharing is restored. I can say it is disconnected because the sharing icon (a hand with a disk drive on the palm) disappears and other PC's cannot access it.

View 9 Replies View RelatedThere's an easy way to save all the files and folders from my old "C" drive. I have copied all my pictures to CD. No problem. Now about all the games I have and things like Roto Form, favorites, etc. I dont have a clue. Can I back up the entire "C" drive? Will I have to re-load all my games? Is there a way I can transfer files through the USB ports? Its been suggested to me to actually put my old hard drive in the new computer to transfer the information. I don't want to do anything that might compromise the new computer. I have even thought of allowing a virus in the new computer from the old although I dont know of any.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been searching for most parts of the net and the forums here and did install uninstall restore my notepad, paint and wordpad but nothing seems to work.When these files are opened, nothing seems to be a problem. But whenever you attempt to save by Ctrl+S, or the by clicking File>Save or File>Save As the program automatically closes. This has been a consistent behavior for the 3 softwares.I'm using Windows XP 64 bit OS and had no error messages of any sort except that these programs just close themselves when a save attempt is done.I did virus and malware scans by Avast, ESET Nod & Kaspersky and nothing was detected.Reinstalling isn't an option for me now as I don't have any optical drive... besides, this may be very hard for me but I'm willing to suffer for the sake of learning.

So, if I was saving a photo, instead of clicking on My Documents >> My Pictures, I was able to just click on My Pictures, ect. I am allowed to save the file to the desktop, and of course, can then create a new folder directly on the desktop with the context menu, and etc. It will allow me to create a new folder anywhere else and save any type file being downloaded into that new folder.It simply will not allow me to create a new folder on the Desktop.Could this be some kind of registry alteration?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a gateway 6520 gz laptop with IE6 and XPHE, I 'm on a network with two computers and use NETWORK MAGIC for the network, when I turn the laptop on it wants to display {the page cannot be displayed} instead of going online! Then NETWORK MAGIC pops-up and says {YOU ARE NOW CONNECTED} then I have to manually turn on IE6 button to go online, almost like the page {the page cannot be displayed} wants to come up first instead of the connection?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI need to have network drive on my Windows XP computer. In order for a software to work, there needs to exist a network drive, named N, existing on my PC. Since there's not a second PC to link to, what I did was to created a directory named est on the same PC , share it out, and then, map a network drive, named N, to it. When my PC has an Ethernet cable connected to a switch, Windows XP will see that N drive (existing on the same PC). The moment I disconnect that Ethernet cable from the switch, the N drive is gone. Is there a way to have a mapped network drive on XP (as mentioned above), without the need to have a network cable connecting that PC to a switch?

And then it appears as a "Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC", whereas I actually have a D-Link DFE-538TX 10/100 adapter. Furthermore, I get no icons (at all) in the Network Communications window. So if I want to change any settings of my LAN, for example, I can't, because I can't select the LAN icon or right-click on it. The LAN is working though. The current driver for the Realtek adapter which is listed is a MS driver.
