Desktop Icons Missing / Get The Icons Back On The Screen
Dec 18, 2005After a malware infection (Inet2 and SpySherriff - which took over my desktop) I cleaned up some files, directories and registry-entries. Now, after the cleaning activity as explained by techguys, everything seems going well. All programs do start without problems (through the start-menu or the quick-start taskbar), but there is a small drawback: my desktop screen shows only my wallpaper, there are no icons. The right-mouse click on the desktop also doesn't work (although the desktopsettings are accessible through the control panel). I use WinXP pro. what is wrong and how do I get the icons back on the screen?

Jun 24, 2005When I turn on the computer I get the screen saver but no icons and no startup menu. Nothing happens if I right click on the desktop. I can get into some areas with task manager. However when I opened C: there is no control panel. I ran some spyware and did get rid of some infected files. I tried to download from the operating disk but nothing has helped.

Aug 20, 2007I have windows 2000. I turned it on and when I got to the desktop it was all weird. It has like three or four fuzzy split screens. I can get into safe mode and even ran the AVG to check for viruses. I didn't find any. I tried to get the computer to last known good configuration, but that didn't work

I restarted and when Windows loaded the taskbar and the desktop icons were missing. It's been like this all day. I've done System Restores and uninstalled recent things that I've installed.

As i start up my computer i become stuck with the desktop background after the welcome screen and the desktop icons and start button arrive too late almost taking more than 8 minutes... i am sure windows has loaded and i could hear the start up sound but not the icons and taskbar which appears only after long time.i have analyzed this problem for all these weeks ..i have come up with the conclusion that its a RPC(Remote Procedure Call) which is creating this problem..i diagnosed this when i could still start up task manager when i have desktop background and i end an svchost.exe process....Suddently a shutdown screen with a time down count of 1 minute appears saying that(RPC has been unexpectedly terminated..the system is going to shut down..save ur work..blah blah) ...But then all icons starts appearing and taskbar gets loaded...i rush into run command and type "shutdown -a" and the screen closes and i continue my work..

Dec 29, 2008Using PC and surfing the net, I left my PC for 2 mins and when returned the screen was blank, I have tried turning off and on, but each time the PC starts up, my icons flash on the desktop for a split second then it goes blank again, even if I just turn the monitor off, once turned back on the icons flash up for a split second then it goes blank again. My biggest worry of all is all the kids photo's and video clips I have saved on the PC and about 2 years ago my PC crashed due to a problem with the hard drive and we lost all our memories.

The basics: XP Professional Boot up screen, right before the windows loading screen, or direct after the F8 Menu if you hit "Start Windows Normally..." it will just lock up, no HDD activity, blank screen. now BSOD, nothing.
All 3 safe mods work fine.
Ran chkdsk /r in recovery.
Ran proper fixboot procedure.
Went into safe mode and checked the event viewer.
The only concerning message i got was: The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
AmdK8
Fips
nod32drv
Formatting really isnt an issue since i can back up anything i need through safe mode. However its just the fact that the Windows gremlin has struck me again and i must defeat it once more.
I highly doubt this is a hardware issue as it is more of a driver/software issue.any help?

May 1, 2008Really feeling desperate here. Win xp home. The only way I can get to my desktop without waiting 25 minutes AND having start button and others freeze up and then taking 5 min for each click, I have to first go to Safe Mode and change sometihng in mcsonfig and then restart.
Then I use Normal Mode and get to my desktop with no problem and nothing freezes BUT I then have to reset all my SERVICES in "Sevices ans applications" since they become disabled each time I use Safe Mode. Note: I made sure to diable all unnecessary servies and use only the startups I need in msconfig.
All very time consuming and debilitating. Then I can get online and everything is fine.BUT then each time I shut down or restart my computer its the same cycle all over again. Note: The problem seemed to occur when one day semingly out of nowhere I turned on my compuyer and my logon was apparently corrupted. NO spyware, viruses. Clean machine. When I got to my desktop there was a white screen as oppsoed to blue with an alert to restore my desktop. But when I clicked the restore button notihng happened. Someone told me I may have a corrupt logon name and to set up another which I did and everything wokred fine except for, as I said, when I shut down or restart my computer.
I tried system restore but apparently there are no options/dates to restore back to.
Ive spent 200 hours on this and am ready to throw in the towel. I dont want ot have to resort to a clean reinstall of Winxp but if I have ot can you please inform me about how to keep my files intact (pdfs, word docs and pictures). and if I need to back them up,
