View 2 RepliesI'm in the process of repair/recovery of my machine (Dell Inspiron 8500 with Windows XP Home, Service Pack 2). I'm following exactly the instructions in:
http://attachments.techguy.org/attac...chmentid=62075, but a problem has developed. The "software" file (which is the file that the original blue screen error message says is "corrupt, absent or not writable") will not copy to the new tmp directory to create the backup. My understanding from the article is that this backup file (software.bak) will later be used to restore correct settings for various software applications. Since I can't copy it, it appears that I am screwed,

below is the error message.

I am using XP home and when I start my laptop the following message came up: STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): SystemRootSystem32ConfigSOFTWARE or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

Physical memory dump complete.

I followed the link from other threads to the microsoft site explaining repairing the registry using the installation disk. I got the computer from my brother in law and do not know where the installation disks are. Also it was factory installed and the microsoft instructions say they do not work with OEM software. Is there a way to fix this without the disk? If I find the disk Dell supplied will it work since it it was not a XP install disk?
I have a dell dimension E310 with windows xp, and everytime I start my computer I get a blue screen, that says "c0000218 {Registry File Failure}The registry cannot load the hive (file):System Root System32Confg SAM or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable" then "beginning dump of physical memory: physical memory dump complete." My warranty expired so dell won't help me unless I want to pay $50 for a phone call, and I was wondering if there is any way to fix my computer without losing everthing that was on it.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI did not add any new memory to my systeme. however, I did remove my current memory to access the inside of my laptop. The fan wire had come loose so I reconnected. I fixed that problem only to find out the problem with the registry. I have chose the load last known configuration that worked correctly but it still gives me the little blue pop up screen with the error, then the restart.
I tried to use my windows xp os disk to try and repair it but it wont read the disc before the blue screen comes back up. I'm thinking of buying a Laptop To IDE Hard Drive Adapter. So, I could at least format my hard drive. I'm not sure if this would be a good idea. I went to the microsoft webpage that deals with this issue but I can not seem to find one to fix my problem.
When I turn on my computer running windows XP, I recieve the following message: STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure The registry cannot load the hive (file): SystemRootSystem32ConfigSOFTWARE or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable. how to get it normal and my data too?
View 12 Replies View RelatedI am experiencing a registry (hive) file failure which does not allow me to load Windows. Whenever I try to boot in safe mode, or any mode, I get a blue screen that reads:i did some searching on this forum and found a thread that mentioned taking the drive out of the problem computer and slaving it into a different machine to repair the registry. I do have another computer, so this would be an option for me although may be a bit too advanced for my expertise or lack thereof. But I have a BlacX hard drive docking station (basically an external hard drive reader)

Do I go on with the rest of the tutorial, or where exactly do I go from here? Is there any possibility that I will not have to reformat and get my old computer back?

I'm gettting a blue screen when i try to start my laptop with Windows XP media. It's saying the registry cannot load the hive (file): /SystemRootSystem32ConfigSECURITY or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable. I'm guessing I need the windows xp media reinstallation disk, but I can't seem to find it.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have recently tried to reinstall some oldish games (rainbow 6, Total Annhilation) and when you select install, an error pops up:

C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application. Examination of that folder shows that I do not have a file called Autoexec.nt at all, is this correct? These games have run on this PC before and the error applies to multiple games suggesting a system problem. Is there a way of repairing or checking windows to replace this file. I did get a virus recently however Norton said it quarantined it - this might have
affected windows though prior to this I had noticed no differeance.
I have recently installed this OS on the PC I'm using right now, it used to have Win ME, which is probably by far the worst Windows that has ever existed. The PC runs way better than it used to overall, but I do have one big **** of a problem: I recieve an error message that says "can't find the specified file" when I try to install a program. Programs I've tried to install:
Adobe Reader
Winzip
W2KSP4 (service pak 4)
Windows installer 3.1
And a few more.
Basically anything that has to be extracted or self-extracts. Could this be a problem with the temporary folder, or not enough RAM? (128 MB) Also: I have saved all this programs on the hard drive, I'm not running them from a network, the internet, or any other drive. Keep in mind that I can't install winzip or winrar so I can't use them to fix any problems. I've scanned the hard drive for errors (complete surface scan), ran virus and spyware checks... I have Spyware Doctor and AVG Free antivirus installed on my PC, I don't know if either could be interfering with my PC's performance.
Ive been trying to install windows xp pro onto a compaq presario 5000 for the last 2 months but it doesnt want to go. i tried a flat out cd boot,

I tried using the setup disks from microsoft at How to obtain Windows XP Setup boot disks

I tried to install windows xp pro from inside windows 2000 pro, but the stuff freezes the second i click install windows xp from the autorun menu's.
I used to run winXP home, but had so many problems that I reverted back to win2000 pro."Autopatcher 2k has it, along with almost every update imaginable. I'm running Win2k SP4 and I most certainly am running Windows Movie maker..just Google Autopatcher 2000 and get the August 2006 Full edition. However, the verison is 1.2.3 and does not support many formats(no FLV, MKV or OGM love)Just fire up autopatcher, deselect everything except "windows Movie maker" under "Windows Addons". "
Now, I have downloaded the autopacher 2000, but have not opened the file yet, becuase I wanted to double check with you guys and gals to see if this sounded legit. I really dont want to mess up my system, becuase its running real strong with no problems. The only thing I want out of the patcher is the movie maker. Please let me know if you have heard of this autopatcher 2000 before, and if this sollution sounds viable to what I'm trying to do.
I have just installed a fresh copy of XP Pro and am now attempting to install Office 2000 Midway through the installation a window entitled "windows file protection" pops up which reads: "Windows files must be installed for your installation to proceed. Insert your Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD now." The buttons available to press are retry, more information and cancel. When i insert the cd i used to install XP Pro it tells me i've inserted the wrong CD- the same message comes up when i press "retry"After clicking cancel to exit setup, i get the message entitled "installer information"- "Error 1933- The windows installer service cannot update one or more protected Windows files"

Windows cannot unload your registry file. If you have a roaming profile, your settings are not replicated. Contact your administrator. It all started when I tried to install Norton Systemworks 2006 Preimer and it failed. Then in trying to cleanup Norton's mess. I discovered that I was unable to do things that I had always done, ie. clean-out the Registry. And I started seeing the above message during and after the install try. It sounds like I need Microsoft's fix. I am really taken back up the $99 charge Microsoft wants to give me the fix for a product that I have already paid for and I am a registered user/owner of Windows 2000 Pro/SP4.
