View 5 Replies View RelatedI would point out two things about a re-installation: Contrary to many concerns, a Reinstall DOES NOT change your computer except for replacing files with the original Windows installation files--your desktop and menus and Documents and Settings all stay the same. This may or may not have an effect on some installed programs--I have reinstalled many many times and it seems with XP, I've never had any problem
2. Reinstall is often an easy way to fix a nagging problem that there seems to be no solution to--you can do it easily in about a half hour with a minimum of effort as long as you have your original CD and product code AND you have bootable CD drive which most are--you can test it easily by changing the boot order to the CD and inserting your Windows CD to see if it starts booting.
can somebody explain to me as detailed as possible, about how to edit your Registry.I know you can really mess things up if you don't do things properly,it would be greatly appreciated.I am in need to access it to stop messenger from starting at boot/running in the backround.I went within windows messenger it self and unchecked the boxes(run windows messenger when Windows starts and allow messenger to run in backround)BUT IT STILL RUNS IN THE BACKROUND?I also have other things I need to deal with by editing my Registry.Just unsure exactly HOW TO BACK THE REGISTRY AND EDIT IT??I keep NOTICING (msmsgs.exe)listed in my running processes when I pull up task manager.
View 14 Replies View RelatedAfter almost 4 hours (3 hours of desperate trial and error, 45 minutes of chkdsk) I got my computer to reboot after a mup.sys hang. After using my laptop to research it, I learned that the hang could be caused by a lot of things. So now that I've got it going again, what's my next step? One of the last things I did was take out the new USB 2.0 PCI card, thinking that could be it even though I had been using it for 3 days with no problems during reboots or otherwise. The system crashed sometime last night, possibly while Ghost was trying to do a backup. I backup to a USB 2.0 external drive, again pointing to a possible conflict with the card. (I should note that I just realized Ghost hasn't actually done a backup in two weeks because it thinks the disk is full. Would have been nice it if had notified me of that when it happened.)

Kazaa has a system that cancels your Kazaa s/w, and has a fix to reinstall the s/w. After 3 days I'm still trying to download the s/w but it keeps hanging up in step 5. of the download process, and its driving me nuts! So beware! 2.] C/Net should make it easier to find this site.
View 5 Replies View RelatedBeen working on a friends Gateway P4 'puter after he had a disaster with a virus. Formatted the drive and installed the OS then proceeded to install all his apps and utilities. Left him about a week ago to research what kind of drive for him to purchase to install as Primary slave intending to use it for Acronis backups and other stuff. He called me and said he could not get XP to boot. Well, today I went to his place and turned the system on. Got through the normal startup screen and then the log on screen came up telling me to click on the user name... THERE WAS NO USER NAME SHOWN. My experience with XP is limited but I did try F8 and went through attempts to recover with no joy. Finally decided to just reinstall the OS. Now I gotta go through all the tweaks to get it up and running. Is there a way to get around the user name access without the drastic step of reinstalling the OS? What the heck could have caused this?
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy WinXP Pro SP2 P4 desktop takes a very long time to boot. The time seems to be spent in a routine MBA (Managed Boot Agent) V4.30, which is provided by LAN Works Technology Co. of 3M Corp. The process identified is a boot execution executive named PXE V2.20. Since there is no LAN present on which a boot file is located, the process completes with "No boot file found." The booting process proceeds with the OS file located on the C drive. Is there a way to safely eliminate the MBA step?

View 14 Replies View RelatedMy Laptop XP Pro with SP3 is totally different to the same on my PC, where I upgraded the Sp's as they came out. So the format is different between the two.I wanted to un-install my laptops version and install the version downloaded from MS, but I don't have the option to do so in Add/Remove on the Laptop as I do on the PC. Its listed, but no option to remove/uninstall.Can I un-install this SP3 in the registry or anyother way or could I just install my version and overwrite the current SP3.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI need help. I have two HD installed on my pc. One HD is an 80GB and the other is 40GB. I have the 80GB HD partition into two drives of 40GB each. So I had a C,D,and E drive. My computer was beginning to get cluttered and was running a little slow so I decided to wipe my 80GB HD and re-install the operating system (XP Pro). I went ahead and wiped the drive and reinstalled the operating system. I also partition the drive once again to two 40GB HD's. Everything went as planned however I can only see my C drive now. I do not see my D or E drive. I am really worried because my E drive was used to back up all my files and I was thinking since I did not touch that drive all should be well and in tack. My question is how do I find my D and E drive and will all my files still be in my E drive?

This is what happens.1. i press the power button on the laptop 2. the first screen that pops up is black with the words:
SMART Failure Predicted on Hard Disk 0: TOSHIBA MK4025GAS-(PM)Cannot_Find_Strin Cannot_Find_StringPress F1 to Continue3. when i press F1 it says that windows did not start sucessfully. it also gives me a choice to enter in Safte Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, Last Known Good Config, or Start Windows Noramlly.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI went out of town for 2 weeks, came home and my pc is acting really strange. I've been getting tons of pop-ups, to the point my computer freezes and i must restart. Not only that but it randomly reboots itself even when not being used. Also, when i go to delete files now, the file does NOT go into the recycle bin. I looked at the settings and there is no check mark next to the "do not move files into recycle bin". My BF said he had been downloading things so I figured maybe its a virus or something. I ran Nortons... nothing. Ran AVG... nothing. A friend told me it sounded like spyware so he told me to run Adaware & Spybot. Did that, found a ton of stuff. But when i retarted the pc, it wanted to start in "safe mode". I noticed that most of these pop ups are (search miracle ??) Found info that its a trojan, but i dont know. . I dont know what to do, totally computer illiterate.

View 3 Replies View RelatedIn recent weeks the computer screen keeps freezing with the cursor being replaced by the hour glass symbol. This usually happens after several hours computer usage - but sometimes it occurs soon after the computer is turned on.When this happens, I am unable to log off; the computer on/off button does not work when the screen freezes and I have to turn the computer off at the mains. In order to be able to log back into my broadband internet connection I have to turn the computer and and off twice and then on again Sometimes when the computer screen image freezes a message box appears always saying "End programme" (i.e. "End programme - CiceroUIWndFrame" or "End programme - mixer").
