Finding The Step By Step Procedure For OS Installation?

Sep 8, 2006

I would point out two things about a re-installation: Contrary to many concerns, a Reinstall DOES NOT change your computer except for replacing files with the original Windows installation files--your desktop and menus and Documents and Settings all stay the same. This may or may not have an effect on some installed programs--I have reinstalled many many times and it seems with XP, I've never had any problem

2. Reinstall is often an easy way to fix a nagging problem that there seems to be no solution to--you can do it easily in about a half hour with a minimum of effort as long as you have your original CD and product code AND you have bootable CD drive which most are--you can test it easily by changing the boot order to the CD and inserting your Windows CD to see if it starts booting.

Next Step After Mup.sys Hang Recovery

Nov 13, 2005

After almost 4 hours (3 hours of desperate trial and error, 45 minutes of chkdsk) I got my computer to reboot after a mup.sys hang. After using my laptop to research it, I learned that the hang could be caused by a lot of things. So now that I've got it going again, what's my next step? One of the last things I did was take out the new USB 2.0 PCI card, thinking that could be it even though I had been using it for 3 days with no problems during reboots or otherwise. The system crashed sometime last night, possibly while Ghost was trying to do a backup. I backup to a USB 2.0 external drive, again pointing to a possible conflict with the card. (I should note that I just realized Ghost hasn't actually done a backup in two weeks because it thinks the disk is full. Would have been nice it if had notified me of that when it happened.)

Installing Kazaa: Keeps Hanging Up In Step 5?

Nov 12, 2003

1.] ZD/Net and C/Net should warn readers not to use the free download s/w that claims to block ads on Kazaa. Kazaa has a system that cancels your Kazaa s/w, and has a fix to reinstall the s/w. After 3 days I'm still trying to download the s/w but it keeps hanging up in step 5. of the download process, and its driving me nuts! So beware! 2.] C/Net should make it easier to find this site.

Get Around The User Name Access Without The Drastic Step

Jun 15, 2006

Been working on a friends Gateway P4 'puter after he had a disaster with a virus. Formatted the drive and installed the OS then proceeded to install all his apps and utilities. Left him about a week ago to research what kind of drive for him to purchase to install as Primary slave intending to use it for Acronis backups and other stuff. He called me and said he could not get XP to boot. Well, today I went to his place and turned the system on. Got through the normal startup screen and then the log on screen came up telling me to click on the user name... THERE WAS NO USER NAME SHOWN. My experience with XP is limited but I did try F8 and went through attempts to recover with no joy. Finally decided to just reinstall the OS. Now I gotta go through all the tweaks to get it up and running. Is there a way to get around the user name access without the drastic step of reinstalling the OS? What the heck could have caused this?

Very Long Boot Time WinPro - MBA Step

May 21, 2006

My WinXP Pro SP2 P4 desktop takes a very long time to boot. The time seems to be spent in a routine MBA (Managed Boot Agent) V4.30, which is provided by LAN Works Technology Co. of 3M Corp. The process identified is a boot execution executive named PXE V2.20. Since there is no LAN present on which a boot file is located, the process completes with "No boot file found." The booting process proceeds with the OS file located on the C drive. Is there a way to safely eliminate the MBA step?

Messenger Tries To Load / All Programmed Have Windows Messenger Icon / RPC Server Not Available

Oct 1, 2007

I am running Windows XP on a HP Pavilion ze2000.I think I have a problem with Windows Live Messenger. Actually, I think I have several problems:
1. Messenger tries to load in my tray when I start the computer. It never did this before. It also does the same when I connect to my broadband via dialler. At the moment I am denying access through Zone Alarm. Is this normal?
2. In All Programmes I have a Windows Messenger Icon and a Windows Live Messenger Icon. Again, is this normal? There is only an option to remove Live Messenger in Add or Remove Programmes.
3. There is a "1 contact pending" message above the contact list in my Live Messenger, which leads to a "page not available" message when I click on it.
3. When I close Live Messenger, I get multiple "RPC Server Not Available" warnings which I keep closing but keep reappearing. They appear too fast for me to close them, so I have to restart my machine.

Installation Instructions?

Apr 3, 2005

my OS is windows xp home. when I defrag, the system freezes up and I have to shut down via the surge protector. I contacted Dell but ended up going around in circles with them. The best that I can gather is that I have a corrupt file somewhere. I want to try a repair reinstall. my question is, do I have to set the Bios to boot from the CD drive, or can I simply put in the Reinstallation CD and follow the instructions?

Where To Find Setting For Documents And Setting

Oct 5, 2008

I just finished a complete reinstall of Windows XP. Before the re-installation, I partitioned the hard drive. I want the basic Windows XP system files and drivers on my "C" drive and then I want to accumulate data files (word processing, spreadsheets, photos, music files, etc.) on the new partition which in this case has been labeled the "G" drive. The difficulty I am having is getting getting the "Documents and Settings" to move over to the "G" drive. So that when I want to load photographs from my camera to the computer it goes for C:Documents and SettingsMy NameMy DocumentsMy Pictures. Instead I would like it to go to G:Documents and SettingsMy NameMy DocumentsMy Pictures. Using Windows Explorer I changed the file name of "My Documents" to 'Windows XP old path My Documents" and then I was going to set up a new path to the "G" drive through Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Managment>Disk Management.

However I noticed that when I clicked on Start in the bottom left hand corner and it puts up that little window that "My Documents" which was listed now had the new title 'Windows XP old path My Documents' which I believe means I haven't gotten to the proper place to change the main configuration for Documents and Settings. Long way of saying how do I change the basic configuration for where Document and Settings are stored to a new location.

Get Messenger To Run Again After Uninstall

Aug 12, 2002

It seems when you uninstall Messenger (using the tweaks on this site) the policy is automatically set to prevent it running. This causes the symptom of clicking on the Messenger shortcut and seeing an hourglass for a second or two but the program not loading. To get Messenger installed again requires more than just reinstalling the program from Windows Update or a downloaded installer. After that you have to change the following registry entry with regedit:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftMessengerClientYou should change the PreventRun value from (1) to (0)
