I need help. I have two HD installed on my pc. One HD is an 80GB and the other is 40GB. I have the 80GB HD partition into two drives of 40GB each. So I had a C,D,and E drive. My computer was beginning to get cluttered and was running a little slow so I decided to wipe my 80GB HD and re-install the operating system (XP Pro). I went ahead and wiped the drive and reinstalled the operating system. I also partition the drive once again to two 40GB HD's. Everything went as planned however I can only see my C drive now. I do not see my D or E drive. I am really worried because my E drive was used to back up all my files and I was thinking since I did not touch that drive all should be well and in tack. My question is how do I find my D and E drive and will all my files still be in my E drive?
a client of mine lost connection to her mapped drive and has no record of its path or fqdn. does windows keep a log of previously mapped drives? a history anywhere? or is there a way of finding out what drive or share she was mapping to so I can restore the mapping connection?
My Laptop XP Pro with SP3 is totally different to the same on my PC, where I upgraded the Sp's as they came out. So the format is different between the two.I wanted to un-install my laptops version and install the version downloaded from MS, but I don't have the option to do so in Add/Remove on the Laptop as I do on the PC. Its listed, but no option to remove/uninstall.Can I un-install this SP3 in the registry or anyother way or could I just install my version and overwrite the current SP3.
i am trying to fix a computer for a friend of mine. it is not booting. i know that i could take the easy way out and format the HD, then reinstall windows. but i want to actually FIX IT, if you know what i mean. This is what happens.1. i press the power button on the laptop 2. the first screen that pops up is black with the words: SMART Failure Predicted on Hard Disk 0: TOSHIBA MK4025GAS-(PM)Cannot_Find_Strin Cannot_Find_StringPress F1 to Continue3. when i press F1 it says that windows did not start sucessfully. it also gives me a choice to enter in Safte Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, Last Known Good Config, or Start Windows Noramlly.
Receiving the following on boot up: PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED All searches indicate GoBack by Roxio or Norton. Neither installed - Do not want to reinstall or format drive.
I had to reformat and reinstall Win XP and then restore from backups, some didn't work as advertised.I can't reinstall Acronis True Image because it didn't fully uninstall. There is an entry "[13:51:18 - Error]: Failed to remove "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareAcronis"! Windows core returned the following error: "Invalid key"" which my registry cleaner can't remove. Using regedit I tried but I got the same msg.
I have setup a wireless network between two computers in my office and have installed some software that will automatically backup folders on each of the two computers. It work by backing up certain folders on computer 1 to the hard disk on computer 2 and vice versa.I also have a program installed on both computers that uses the data on computer 1.simplify the process of locating the data on my network I have created virtual drives using the Map Network Drives function in Windows. However; if I start up my computer and open these programs - they can not find the drives, I have to open My Computer first and double click on the drives before the programs will read from them. I am guessing that for some reason Windows is not connecting to these drives, even though I have set them to "reconnect at logon".
I recently installed the program registery fix and i believe it has caused my Cd and DVD drives or the paths to these drives to be deleted from windows as they do not show up in my computer. I have tried the options in the following list but none of them have helped me, i'm really stuck but i can't fix the problem. - I've tried deleting the upper and lower filters but they are not in the selected registery. - I've tried a system restore but i can't go back to a previous point before the registery fix install. - I've tried unplugging the leads and restaring but this didn't help. - I've tried microsoft guided help but it couldn't find the upper and lower filters. - i beleive they are still listed in my bios but don't know exactly what i'm looking for when in bios. I don't know where to go from here, i also run alcohol 120% a virtual drive software and the registery fix has had no affected on these drives but i'm wondering if this maybe why the program registery fix deleted my actual drives becasue of the virtual drives and replaced the paths to my actual drives but i'm not sure it's just a guess. I've deleted the virtual drives and tried the steps above but i've had no luck.
My operating system is Windows XP Pro. As of yesterday all was fine, I even burned a DVD. Today "My Computer" isn't even showing my DVD/CD recorder, only showing Drive A: 3.5 Floppy. It started when I downloaded (I think) WindowsBlinds, just wanted to do some color changes. Well when I installed it, Norton came up with a Trojan. Norton Quarantined or deleted it and said no more further actions required. The install finished (windowblinds) and I tried a couple different skins and decided to uninstall it. Uninstalled with Revo Uninstaller
I am using Windows XP Professional SP2 on an Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe MB. I have 5 internal HDD's and 2 external USB drives, I also have 2 DVD R/RW +- Dual Density drives, a Zip 250 and an Orb 2GB drive. So far this year I have had to reinstall my Windows like 8 times and done about 4 Windows repairs! Each time I seem to get 4 extra removable drives added to my system. In Disk Manager they are listed as "Generic STORAGE DEVICE USB Device", I have changed Device Usage to Do Not use this device (disable) and also I have uninstalled each device. Unfortunately, each time I restart the computer, they come back, shifting other drives to another drive letter.
I work for a fire department and they have Desktop Authority map certain network drives when they login. For some reason, DTA will map the drives when they login, and everything works fine, but after an hour or two, they lose connectivity to that drive and are no longer able to access it. I know this is very vague, but has anyone had this problem?BTW, I just recently upgraded from NT 4.0 to Server 2003 Standard, and we've had tons of other little problems with permissions and the like. Is this the cause of the dissapearing drives?
I have just bought windows xp 2007 sp3, is this better than sp2? Should i install it? Is there any speacial way of installing it or simply put in cd and upgrade windows?

I've been given an old 400mhz pc but no drivers. I installed Win2K(pro) on it & now have only 16 colours & no sound. Here's some info from the POST 06/08/1999 -i810-PC87366-6A69MC3AC-00I've taken out the mobo to look for any other clues & I found an intel chip bearing the no. FW82801AA. That's all I can see. I've never actually opened up a comp before so I'm not too sure what I'm looking for. I just need sound & graphics to work!

My AdAware tea-timer located an instance of FastSearch. I had AdAware quarantine and remove this. I see no instance of it after running AdAware again, but when trying to run Spybot S&D and Panda Scan my computer locked up on both programs. I've ran HJT and see no reference to FastSearch, but do see a few WinLogOn entries that look suspicous to me, as well as a Wild Tangent entry I know will need to be removed. I'd just like to have some more experienced eyes take a look at my HJT log.I'm running XP Home edition on a HP Pavillion a320n with 512 RAM (yes, time to add some new memory as well).
I started the process of conversion to NTFS from FAT32 and I got a response that included: This conversion will also remove your previous operating system backup. Then: Convert may run if this volume is dismounted first. ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID (their caps). Would you like to force a dismount on this volume? What are opened handles? What happens when they are invalid?
And how do I find my backup(s)? I have a folder on my desktop Created Oct.29, 2006 that is faded and labeled _RESTORE. Properties shows that it is 1.21GB and has 951 files that are marked Read-only and Hidden but when I open the folder it shows only 4 files of 64KB dated 2002 and 2004. Is that folder related to backups?I want to create a current backup or restore point but I have only 5.15GB left free. Help, please.
I inherited a great computer that is running SP1a. It has not been used in years but is running great. It has some great programs that cannot be replaced. I've heard SP3 is incompatible with a few programs and don't want to chance losing them. Also, since its an older system, I'd rather update 1 step at a time. Where can I find service pack 2 being that Microsoft's site only links to SP3 (all SP2 links take you to an SP3 page)? I tried Download.com but only found SP3 and SP1a.
