Transfer Files/folders Old Computer To New Computer?
Aug 26, 2005
I have purchased a new computer to replace my old one(both are running Windows XP Home) and want to know if Windows XP has a way to transfer all of my files and folders directly to the new PC and also I need to remove everything from my old computer except for the Windows XP Operating system (don't want to leave any personal information in the system) before I either give this to a relative to use or donate it.
Transfer files from old computer (Win 2000) to new computer (Win XP) thru a crosslink cable? I just don't know how to do all the settings in both Windows to make both computers to connect with each other and to do the file transferring.

I bought a new laptop with Windows XP in it, I wanted to transfer some files from my Desktop PC which has Vista to my laptop with XP, I bought a Belkin USB Data Transfer Cable to transfer files with help of Windows Easy Transfer but when I installed the software provided with it, it seemed that I can only transfer files from XP to Vista.

I just started having a problem with search in Windows XP (sp3). The other options work ok, but search "all files and folders" crashes Explorer.exe. I reinstalled search assistant from the original XP disc -- still the same problem.I think this is the right error in the event log:Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.5512, faulting module kernel32.dll, version 5.1.2600.5512, fault address 0x00012aeb.For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
I built a new computur and now that its up and running I'd like to get some of the apps from my old computer on to the new computer. Trouble is some of the install disks have been lost/misplaced since the old computer was 6 years old. I saw with XP you can transfer the contents of an old HD to a XP setup but it seems to suggest that you do this while you are installing XP not afterwards. Is it possible to transfer these applications to the new computer?
I just bought xp home (upgrade) on ebay from a guy who says he scrapped the computer it was activated on. Assuming he's on the up and up, what do we have to do to for me to activate it on my machine? I could find nothing about this on the MS site.

I need to trnsfer the files from an older computer to a new one. Both systems are XP. The old system has no CD burner. I'm not interested in transferring the hard drive into the new computer. What's my best alternative?
I had my system running XP but it is now running Windows 7 and for the reason I backed my files up to a portable Hard Drive formatted as FAT32. Now when I try to use the Files And Settings Transfer Wizard it doesn't seem to recognize the files and says that they are not there.
When I open certain folders in my computer, these folder tend to take ages to load. I checked the graph in the performance window (Ctrl+Alt+Del) but there was no suddeny increase of CPU usage. Others folder is normal, I double click and it show nicely. Just for certain folder. Is it because of the number of files in the folder? It dont happen when I open my C: drive but if i open that particular folder. The windows explorer just stop responding.. and i had to wait for it to come out. If i access a folder under it and hit back or up, again it will stuck there again n wait for it to load.
I run win xp and have a nokia phone. all other folders on the phone seem to me accessable, but this one, and all non phone folders aswell. This would indicate a phone problem, but for old times sake I blame windows. Also, if there are other alternatives to windows explorer that would be a very efficient way to find out if there is any blame to be guided towards windows.
I used to be able to access the shared folders that are on my computer that is running windows XP on my vista laptop and my xbox 360 but they are no longer showing up I just spent a couple of hours trying to get it working again but nothing
When I double click using the left mouse button on a file or folder, the file or folder does not open. Instead the search window comes up. This has just happened recently. Right clicking on the mouse gives me the option of opening the file or folder.
After a format and opening My Computer which i have set to open as Explorer and selecting the view to List, i click tools>folder options>view > apply to all folders, then i change the my computer folder to view details but the thing is My computer shows detail but all other folders remain in icons. Why won't they be in List? I uploaded a 2 screens First one of how one of how everyother folder looks like the Second My Computer looks like when clicking on My Computer. Now after setting the option in My computer for view clicking tools>folder options>view tab>apply to all folders. The folder view only changes for My Computer all other folders remain unchanged.
I installed a driver/USB File Transfer on two computers and connected the cable into its USB ports. I am not able to transfer files from older computer to a new one.

I have two win XP laptops, and i need to transfer some files across. Is there a way to wirelessly transfer file between PCs, either with or without 3rd party software. I might have to just resort to USB, but it would be great if i could sort something that may take longer initially, but will overall save time.
This problem started up after the last format of my computer. I have the usual folders shared on my computer which consists of my shared docs, music, DOD/CS:S maps and games. During LAN parties (or any other time) nobody can get files off my computer. They are shared just fine, they can see the files, but when we try to transfer it says "Cannot copy *filename* - access is denied. make sure the disk is not full or right protected and that the file is not currently in use." The file transfer bar will go like it is transferring, but when it is done I get that message. It doesn't make sense. I have these two boxes checked under "sharing" in folder properties: "share this folder on the network" and "allow network users to change my files." All firewalls are off. This happens over 4 different routers. I have reconfigured the network many times.
The only thing I can think of that may have caused it is that I deleted the microsoft .net asp account that is installed with microsoft .net framework. would that do it? I haven't had the energy to re-install that yet. I deleted it so I wouldn't have to select an account on startup. Anyway, if you have any input I would appreciate it because this is annoying. Update: And I have just determined that I can listen so some songs on media player over the network, but I can never transfer them between computers.
my computer jams every now and again for a minute or 2 depending on what i do for E.g if i press ALT and TAB to quikly change wat im doing it jams. also whenever i click on something like a folder or shorcut of a program , instead of opening the file or folder the proprties come up ( this problem is now fixed but it might be a sympton of a virus or sumthing ?).i think its cuz of a file i downloaded off the internet.
I saved some old CAD drawings using DOS commands onto a USB memory stick, to be able to transfer the CAD files onto another computer running Win XP Pro SP3. The old DOS based CAD files on the USB memory stick were not recognized by Windows Explorer. When the old HD connected via USB to the Win XP computer happily allows files to be transferred. The memory stick has lots of files on it saved under Win XP and most of it not recognized on the DOS machine, but none of the directories created or files saved on the memory stick from the DOS machine are recognized by the Win XP machine.
okay guys i joined the real computor race, i just got a compaq, 512mb pentium 4/ 2.0 ghtz processor, and winxp professional installed with 40gb hard drive. so now i need to know (step bystep) how to get all the stuff i want off my dinosaur, hp celeron, 64mb, 6gb hd, and win98se, onto my new computer.
I've learned now heavily about the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. I've also learned about the USMT, which I've not yet used in practice, but learned the basics of in the .inf version. Studying that was how I was able to learn this deep into the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. Basically, the two have similar, but not exactly the same configuration. Now here I'll post the configuration for the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. I took what I found already there, and was adding features to it. I didn't create this from scratch, and it would've been silly to, as it's a configuration file.My issue is that whenever I'm saving settings, anytime I tell it to save something from HKEY_CURRENT_USER in the registry, it does not work. I was needing to know if anyone knows why, so I can correct it please.
