Maintenance :: Windows 8 / 8.1 Extremely Slow To Boot - Take 10-15 Minutes

Oct 26, 2013

I've had certain problem with my Windows 8 installation . Let me summarize the entire scenario but before that below are my System Details .

System :- Dell Inspiron 17R SE 7720 Laptop .
O/S :- Windows 8.1 .

I formatted my system yesterday and installed Windows 8.1 via MSDN ISO . Installed Dell Drivers and a few programs like Norton 360 etc , after which i shutdown my system yesterday .

When i opened my system today , i was shocked to see Preparing automatic repair message on the Dell boot screen . It tried Automatic repair because it said that Windows was unable to boot properly . However , Automatic repair was unable to do anything .

After that i shutdown my system again and then again powered it on. This time it booted to Windows but took about 5 min to get to the password screen . After booting to Desktop mode , i tried to open chrome , task manager etc , but nothing opened , and the system was painfully slow up until 10 min . After which everything was normal .

Tried to open Event log and it also crashed. I again restarted my system and this time it was lightening fast . Tried to shutdown and restart 2-3 times more , and it was fast all these times .

I've attached a dump of all my logs using SF Diagnostic tool ....

When Unplug Windows 8 Laptop - It Turns Extremely Slow

May 31, 2014

I got a new laptop. It's a Dell Inspiron 15r SE (i15Rse-4267ALU). Basically, whenever I unplug my laptop it turns extremely slow. Not slow as in some programs take a while to load, I mean like I can barely move the mouse across the screen slow. My computer's specs are:

Intel Core i7-3632QM Processor
8 GB of RAM
Windows 8 Operating System
AMD Radeon HD 7730M Grapics Card (switchable)
Intel HD 4000 Graphics Card

Since I have had the laptop, I have always had it on plugged in ... recently I unplugged my laptop to bring it in the other room and I could barely even more the mouse across the screen. Its power plan is on High Performance, I have Google'd my issue before, and I haven't been able to fix it. Why my PC is so ... slow unplugged?

Maintenance :: Windows 8.1 - Extremely Slow Wake And Start Up Times

Dec 14, 2013

This is Windows 8.1. When I wake my computer from sleep, regardless of how long the computer has been sleeping, it takes 10-15 minutes to complete the process. It takes about a minute or so for the lock screen to show up. When it does appear, everything seems to be working but I click on the lock screen to reveal the password entry and a grey screen emerges but no password box or profile photo. Its as if the password box and photo are just missing on the page. So as I wait for the password box to appear, the lock screen will eventually return. I have to keep clicking on the lock screen to see if the password box has appeared.

Sometimes instead of the grey screen, the loading circle of dots animation is displayed but still behind the lock screen as above.

Network / Sharing :: Windows 8.1 - Internet Speed Is Extremely Slow?

Jan 19, 2014

I just got a new laptop (Asus s400ca) and I've been having wireless connection issues from the start. It originally had windows 8.0. I thought it would change when I went to 8.1. It hasn't. I have tried to reinstall the drivers. I've done several commands that I have seen around different forums. Today was the first time I have been able to access my wireless, however the speed is extremely slow. I went to speedtest.net to see what my average ping was and it was 2238 and my download speed was .17 mps and my upload speed was .13. I compared with wifes computer and hers is running a download speed of 17.6

Network / Sharing :: Windows 8 PC As Server / Extremely Slow Transfer To Android

Sep 28, 2013

I have setup a n54l hp micro server with windows 8 as my home server and shared a folder with password protection set to off (needed to enable guest account for this to work btw which seemed strange)

Now file transfer between my windows pcs is fast (30MB/s over wifi) but to my android phone and tablet the speed is horribly slow (30kb/s i.e. 1000x slower)

Before I used a readynas duo as my file server and my transfer speeds with my phone were about 0.5MB/s and on pc about 5/MB/s

I have tried different applications on my phone with no change in speed (currently using es file explorer)

Network / Sharing :: Windows 8 - Brand New Laptop Extremely Slow Internet Connection

Sep 15, 2014

I have a brand new Windows 8 Dell Inspirion laptop, and it has a horrible internet connection. I have not downloaded any new programs and I don't visit shady websites so I don't think it's a virus. Sometimes the internet is just moderately slow, and sometimes it just completely won't move, I will type in a web address and it will "think" about loading the page for 20 minutes before finally telling me it can't.

The problem is not with my wifi, I have another laptop that runs Windows 7 and have no issues with that one, or any other device on the network. It's just the windows 8 laptop.

I have Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 3160.

I tried updating the driver, but it tells me the driver is already up to date.

Also the CPU usage for WinRar doesn't go above 15% for some reason no matter what i do. Tried setting priority to highest in task manager but still nothing.

Maintenance :: Windows 8 - Computer Suddenly Became Slow - 100% Disk Usage?

Apr 13, 2013

My Task Manager:

HP Pavilion with Intel Core i3 running on Windows 8 and NVIDIA GEFORE GT 630M 1GB

My relatively new (about 2 months old) laptop running on Windows 8 suddenly became slow. I noticed it starting yesterday when it became really laggy. Just a few days ago it was working just fine.

I tried to look for solutions online and was worried that it might be caused by malware. I did a quick scan with Malwarebytes and it found no infections. When I boot in safe mode, it seems pretty fine. I tried doing a system restore but I was also informed that it wasn't completely done probably because of an antivirus.

My antivirus is Norton Internet Security and I've read that Norton can be such a hog so I've tried disabling it though not entirely and it hasn't been uninstalled yet. I've also tried running a chkdsk /r because going to Tools > Check for Errors on my C: drive said that there were errors that needed repair.

It has become less laggy but apparently not totally (not to previous state). My task manager however still shows 100% disk usage. Previously Norton would be listed among the top but now it's usually "System" and I don't quite understand why.

Setup Installation :: HDD To SSD Transfer Make Computer Slow - Dell Inspiron M5040

Feb 13, 2014

The computer I am using is a Dell Inspiron M5040 laptop.

I got a Samsung 840 Pro Series SSD to replace my HDD, and used the Samsung Software that came with it to image my OS over to the SSD. It had an error at first, so I removed my antivirus program and ran it again, and it worked.

Everything works pretty much the same, except for noticeable differences in search and Internet webpage access.

If I search in Explorer, the searches are fast and prompt. But if I search with the regular search charm ( WIN+S ), searches are more than 7x slower than on the previous HDD. Also, webpages a quick to load on different computers (not the internet speed, in other words). But this computer had slow loads, and now the loading is even slower on the new SSD.

Things I've tried:

Multiple SFC scans - all say there is some files that could not be fixed All windows updates installed enabled Trimm, updated SSD firmware, ran Windows SSD optimization, optimized computer for SSD use Reset Internet Explorer Rebuilt index

I'm thinking of ditching this slower laptop in favor of something... anything nearby. Regretting either imaging to another drive, or using Samsung to do it.

Windows 8 Very Slow To Access Files - Green Ribbon Of Slow Death

Dec 16, 2012

I have just built a new computer and Installed Win8. The motherboard, processor, and system drive are all brand new Intel stuff; the media drive is a new Seagate. Programs get up and running just fine, but I have transferred my files over from my old xp machine, and Win Explorer is very slow to access them.

I'll open a folder, and more often than not the thumbs will not be there; I'll then try to open or preview a file and I'll get the green progress bar over the address bar. This will often take up to a minute or more to run, and if I leave it be then the icons will usually appear and the files will then be accessible. If I try to open or preview a file before it's done things lock up on me.

After navigating away from that folder and allowing some time to pass however, the thumbs dissapear again and I am back to square one. sometimes the thumbs will reappear all on their own. this seems to be an issue whether we're talking large files or small, or folders with 100's of files or as few as 8. The very same files are instantly accessible by the new comp from the original locations on my external USB drive and on my xp machine over the network. Once they are copied to the new machine is when things get bogged down. This seems to be the case both on the system drive and the media drive.

Furthermore, right from the very beginning, I've had icons disappearing and reappearing from my start menu apps page.

I have tried the following to resolve the problem:

- I have optimized the folders in question for both the types of media therein, and back to "General Items" again

- I have disabled indexing both on the drives themselves and in the libraries control panel

- I have run a full system virus scan with Bit Defender

- I have contacted Windows support and they have run a scan that showed Windows itself to be working properly

One thing that occures to me is the problem seems to be with the SATA drives and the SATA drives only, but if there's something wrong with the mother board wouldn't my programs have trouble opening too?

Windows File Explorer Is Extremely Unreliable?

So, I've just installed Windows 8.1 on my pc, and most of the time when I open the file explorer that comes with windows it comes up with a green loading bar at the top, which usually takes around 10 minutes just to view the files, then, other times when I open the file explorer, it loads instantly. Here's a screenshot of what happens:

Also, when I make a new folder, then double click and re-name, when I press enter the file name doesn't change, then the file explorer crashes, then when I go back, it shows the file has been re-named.

I'm not sure if you're able to click that so just copy and paste it.

CPU - AMD BULLZOZER FX 6100
RAM - 4GB CORSAIR
HDD 1TB WESTERN DIGITAL BLUE

I recently installed Microsoft Office 2013. And ever since I installed that I have had problems with the file explorer.

Should I click the "cancel" tab and/or the "red X" to close the program? If I do, will I be able to start the process again? This just seems like an extremely long time to complete such a small portion (1/32 inch on the progress bar) of the process.

Windows 8.1 Hangs On Many Operations?

Mar 24, 2014

I have a Windows 8 machine with Windows 8.1 upgrade.

On my operations such as restarting and shutting down it hangs and does nothing (I understand this a common problem but I have tried 3 solutions I found on the internet and none of them worked.) I still have to turn off my computor by holding the power button......

It isn't just shutting down however. Often when I try to open a program I have downloaded from the internet (the latest example being a driver scanner) nothing happens.

To try and fix these issues, I attempted to refresh Windows 8. Again it did nothing. After clicking the Get Started button it just hung on Preparing. I only left it for about 20 minutes, I thought something would have happened by then. The same is true for reinstalling Windows.

Virtualization :: Windows 8 Hangs In VirtualBox?

Apr 30, 2013

Sometimes Windows 8 just hangs after I look around and change some of the DVD related settings in VirtualBox. My host system is ubuntu and the guest is Windows 8.

When it hangs it is usually showing the Windows 7 desktop because I am always in that mode. I cursor to the lower left to try to the the mini-tiles but no matter what I do with the cursor, the mini-tiles do not appear. In fact, nothing works. I cannot launch any desktop applications.

In the past I solved this by simply having VirtualBox send the shutdown power-off signal. Windows is ignoring the shutdown signal. Is there a Windows-centric way to fix this problem so that I can do a Windows-centric shutdown in the normal fashion or otherwise resolve or prevent this problem?

Maintenance :: Windows 8.1 Shutdown Hangs

I have found this in the event logger:

"The system firmware has changed the processor's memory type range registers (MTRRs) across a sleep state transition (S5). This can result in reduced resume performance."

Source: Kernel-Power

I heard it having something to do with "fast startup" or "Quick Boot" I am unsure.

HP Pavilion G6 Windows 8.1 Update Causing Hangs?

I know that I have to update to windows 8.1 as there are apps which refuse to be installed unless I update ... Windows 8 Hangs Up On Boot After Installing Updates

Jan 3, 2014

About couple hours ago I decided to install updates on my Windows 8 desktop. I had about 12 or so. Can't remember which ones now. My update settings are to notify me of the updates but not to install them. So I manually clicked, yes, install. Then after a little while the updates window showed up in red telling me that some updates did not install. So I decided to reboot the desktop to clear it up...

The desktop now hangs up on this very screen: (New windows logo and a spinning thing)

That spinning thing keeps spinning, no matter how long I let it run like this. The HDD light first blinks but then about half a minute in, it stops doing so. I believe that the fan inside spins audibly louder too.

OK, so if I reboot by holding down the power button for a few seconds, it begins rebooting again. For the second time it showed something like "Automatic repair" or something. (I need to say that my solid state drives have Bit locker set up on them.) So after entering the bit locker keys I was presented with an option to do repairs. Since I didn't feel like I needed to do system restore I declined and chose to keep booting into Windows.... again nothing.

So I repeated the process above, but this time it did not offer me to do system restore and instead, it showed something in the tune of "Repair windows". So I chose it, and it then showed this window:

Now I tried it two times already, and no matter what I choose, it hangs up just like I showed on the screenshot above -- with that white border around whatever I choose... How do I get my desktop back?

Windows 8 Install Hangs On Boot Screen?

Nov 16, 2013

upgrading my old PC to Windows 8, because I absolutely cannot afford to buy new, and I don't want to get caught out when Microsoft pull the plug on XP.

I have a copy of Windows 8 64 bit, which I want to try to get installed. My system has an Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 which (according to the Intel website) supports Windows 8. However when I try to install Windows 8, I can boot from the CD but it doesn't go any further than the splash screen with the blue Windows 8 logo. I don't get any other information as to what the problem is.

What I have tried:

1. I checked that "Execute Disable" was turned on in my BIOS.
2. I unplugged all USB devices except Keyboard and Mouse
3. I tried booting from a USB DVD drive.

None of the above worked. I can't do an upgrade install from within Windows XP because it is 32 bit.

By the way I have included the log from the SysInfo utility in case it is useful:

System Info Utility version 1.0.0.2

Apps / Software :: Windows Installer Hangs - Not Working At All

Mar 23, 2014

Since a few weeks for some reason I cannot access some programs (like MS Word), it just says that "the operating system is not presently configured to run this application". It doesn't show up as a registry item either same as some other programs.

Now my problem is that I cannot install a new version, nor openoffice, or anything else for that matter that uses windows installer.

I've checked if the service and subservice was running and they were, I've tried SFC /scannow and Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth but they both didn't fix the problem ( did fix some corruptions though).

What happens with the installer is basically it doesn't do anything. It just sits at initializing forever and doesn't install anything at all. Currently cannot install any programs but don't want to reinstall windows since I have a lot of programs and settings I don't want to lose.
