Unable To Turn On Wireless Connection In Airplane Mode
Sep 19, 2014
I have a Dell 15R Inspiron laptop running Windows 8; It has a Dell 1705 Wireless card. Suddenly after trying to check for Windows Updates my computer said it is unable to check due to an error. Tried to correct error without success. Then the computer began to go to airplane mode; I kept turning on wireless connection. Finally it went into airplane mode and prevented me from turning the wireless connection back on.
I checked and found a message the ethernet cables were unplugged. I checked my network connection and it is fine. My tablet and printer are connected wirelessly and work ok. I reset the computer to factory default settings. I tried many Microsoft's solutions from their forum and nothing works. The computer is 1 year old and I spend a lot of time fixing problems that arise through no fault of mine. I am totally dissatisfied with Windows 8 and 8.1.

The computer turn off the wireless connections and defaults into airplane mode. I had this problem with Windows 8. The option to easily toggle airplane mode on and off become grayed out unchangeable. The only way I found to temporarily fix the problem was to rightclick the airplane icon and then troubleshoot the wireless connections which would then turn wireless back on. I had the option to upgrade to 8.1 and I did and it fixed the problem for a while. It did happen again which is why I'm back on the web searching for possible more permanent solution for this. Luckily it only happened once a week ago and hasn't happened again. I was wondering if this bug was known about and if you possibly know of a way to fix.

I am using a dell latitude e6430 laptop and just recently i encountered this problem- The airplane mode of my computer refuses to be turned off.
I tried going to the pc settings > networks but the selection is grayed out and stays at [on]. This results in my computer not being able to connect to the internet.
I have also tried doing a system restore to the date when it was working perfectly fine, but the airplane mode is still grayed out.
The only way i could access my internet on this computer is to tether my mobile phone and connect it to the wifi via USB tethering.
Is there any way to force off the airplane mode(In command prompt etc) or Remove the option?

My os is 8.1. The box would still not change.

I am writing a script to change my computer settings when I go to work and change them back when I get home.
I would like to know how to script turning on/off Airplane Mode. If that's not possible, how do I script turning on/off wireless and Bluetooth?

The problem I have, on my desktop PC, is that I'm missing the Airplane Mode switch from all the areas.
Couple of screenshots;
The reason I'd like to have this option, is that I use Reaper as a DAW, and its well known that disabling all your wireless is a good way to increase performance.
I've gone into Device Manager and simply disabled the wireless driver...but that's not very convenient.
My specs;
-running Windows 8.1
-Asus z87 Pro motherboard
-Intel Core i5-4670k
-16GB ram

Possible to enable/disable (turn on/turn off) Airplane Mode either using CMD or with two separated shortcuts (i.e. desktop shortcut 1 enables Airplane Mode, desktop shortcut 2 disables Airplane Mode)?

I have an Asus laptop running Windows 8.1. I have an hdmi cable connected to my tv with a wireless logitech keyboard and mouse. Is there anyway to turn the laptop without opening the lid by using the keyboard? I have searched and people suggested getting some external button which I am not looking for while others suggest hibernating the laptop which is also not an option as I use it only few times a week.

I'm an old Windows XP guy on my desktop who is struggling with Windows 8 on a new laptop. My current issue is the fact that each time I turn on my laptop I have to reconnect to my wireless network. I have to go to my settings and than to change PC settings and go though a series of steps to get it re-set. When doing the initial set up I did set the wireless connection as always on (or what ever the wording was). What do I need to do to keep the connection.

I just installed a new wireless ac adapter and I do get a 1.3Gbps connection to my router. However when I test this connection by transferring some large files I get about 350Mbps for sending and 600 Mbps for receiving. When I transfer the same files with a 1Gbps wired connection I get about 970Mbps for sending (I think that includes some caching) and 760 Mbps for receiving.
Are there some options in Windows 8.1 Pro that can be set to get better wireless performance?

Just bought a new Gateway desktop with Windows 8 and can't maintain wireless internet connection.
Connects sometimes, but drops unexpectedly.
Sometimes says it can't connect, but does anyway and works fine. Sometimes it can't see any networks.
Usually can only see my network, though I am in a condominium surrounded by many networks.
My HP laptop (Windows XP) in the same room has a solid connection so I know the wireless signal strength is not an issue
I saw the "unstable wifi" post and tried removing network devices from power saving, that didn't work.

As all know that Microsoft removed the ability to create ad-hoc wireless connection via the "Set up a wireless ad hoc" option under "Set up a new connection or network" in Windows 8, So my question is How can we bring back the valuable feature?
My friends are using Windows 7 and they can create a Wi-fi Hotspot very easily which can even be accessed by me having Windows 8 Enterprise installed in Compaq 620. But i couldn't create one.
I've tried the following applications floating in the web which claims to do the Job, but none of them seems to work for me-
1. Connec8
2. Virtual Router Plus
3. Wi-Man
4. Win Hot-Spot version v.1.2.42
5. Connectify
6. Thinix Wi-Fi Hotspot
This feature was good in Windows 7. I don't know what made Microsoft remove it from Windows 8. For this only i am being advised to downgrade to Windows 7, which genuinely i am not interested in!!

i use a usb Wireless adapter to acess the internet, and my signal is always good. The connection works fine too. But in some sites (more specifically in a flash video player that i have to use many times) and when i try to download uptades via Windows Uptade the connection just drops, and in most of times i have to disconnect the USB adapter and plug again to re-connect.
I don't use any antivirus, any 3rd party firewalls, nothing. I skirted the updates problem downloading them from the MS site, instead of Windows Uptade, and the uptades have installed fine, but itill pisses me off. The disconnect problem happens sometimes when i try to download something via Torrent (using Bittorrent), but in these days it happens most of times in the Flash player. This don't happen in youtube, curiously.

So I bought this new Samsung Ativ book4, for some reason at random times the wireless goes to a "limited connection" and I have to reboot the computer to get a full connection. Do you think this is hardware or driver?
I heard Windows 8 is not very friendly with wireless drivers and Windows 8.1 is suppose to have better support for wireless drivers.

I installed hyper v on my machine which is running Windows 8.1. Then I created a Virtual Switch on my wireless network. After that, it was not working in the VM but the wireless connection in the host was working fine. After that, when I connected to a different wireless network, it did not work. I deleted the bridge, uninstalled hyper v, but it is still not working. I installed hyper v again, but it is still not working. The wireless connection connects to the wireless network after putting the password, but does not give network connectivity to the internet.
I need to get the wireless connection to work again.

The wireless usb adapter I have gets extremely better wifi connection that the internal adapter and the signal strength on the networks won't fluctuate. Are there any settings I can change on the intel adapter, or can I buy a new internal adapter to replace the intel to get better reception?

On my computer there is a pre-installed Windows 8 which works fine for UEFI boot (Secure boot not necessary).
Now when I switch in UEFI setup at boot time the UEFI mode into the CSM (BIOS) mode and restart then Windows 8 is not starting any more.
As far as I find out an UEFI-based Windows 8 can only boot with UEFI mode enabled.
So my question is: Can I turn an existing UEFI based Windows 8 installation into an CSM/BIOS based installation (=a Win8 which boots successfully even when I enable CSM in UEFI setup) ?
If yes: How do I do that?

DVD drive is powered off, Lenovo X230, Windows 8.1 64 bit and found that in the safe mode (minimal), the problem does not exist. For trouble I decided to try other options of safe boot to have further information. After restarting in safe mode "Active directory repair"', I can not turn back to Normal Startup. I see only pure blue screen with only one button with restart and shut down, there no any key on the keyboard who work, left click not working too. And I can not access to msconfig and startup manager to change this setting.
But I have a bootable disk and I can edit registry but I do not know what do I have to do to get back Normal startup.

I am using an ASUS K55N laptop, equipped with an AMD A8-4500M APU, 4GB single-channel RAM, and of course, Windows 8 standard x64.
Occasionally, anywhere from an hour to three days after a boot-up, the computer will hang while in sleep mode (screen will be off but indicator lights will remain on for about 5 minutes in sleep mode) and shut off. Upon restarting, I'll be greeted by a "Your PC ran into a problem and had to restart" Windows prompt. Of course, a minidump will also be produced. However, there is no BSOD anywhere to be found.
Upon looking into these dump files with WinDbg, all of them point toward my Atheros AR9485 wireless card's driver; either athw8x.sys or athrx.sys depending on the driver I was using at the time. I have tried several Atheros drivers, to no avail. I have tried using new drivers, old drivers, Windows 7 drivers, you name it. At this moment, I am using a Windows 7 driver. Yet, it has not solved the issue.
Verifier is disabled, although I believe my issue can be attributed to debugging. I have literally tried everything and it persists.
Attached are my SF diagnostics tool logs.
