the last few days a came upon my computer and it was shut down when i restarted the computer
it said the computer encountered an error an shut down
sending info to Microsoft
1- how can i find out what caused the error
2- has others had similar this problem
I have been having issues with my PC restarting and telling me something along the lines your Windows has encountered a problem and is collecting data and will restart now. So it would seem my install is corrupted in some manner.
So I have tried doing the Windows refresh but I cannot get passed the option of inserting media into drive. I place my Windows 8 64 bit professional CD into my drive and it reads it and just tell me incorrect media.
I recently built my fourth computer with the following components:

The operating system is Windows 8.1 Pro (clean install on the SSD). The system is so fast and awesome that it refuses to shut down. It makes no difference how I shutdown, it restarts in about 3 seconds. I have to physically cut power to the PSU to shut it down. I have updated all the device drivers and have the latest BIOS (version 1707) according to the ASUS website. I
As a troubleshooting measure, I also did a clean install of Windows 8.1 (not Pro version) on a 250 GB WD HD without the MOBO and GPU drivers and booted with only this HD (all other storage devices unplugged). The same problem persists so I believe it is a BIOS setting or a motherboard problem. I am using the default BIOS settings without overclocking the CPU.
While updating my computer i accidentally left the charger out. So it shut down towards the end of the update and now when i restart my computer i'll only the see the HP start-up/loading screen and then the screen just turns black and all i see is my cursor. I didn't get any Windows installation cd with my computer and now what to do.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed Windows 8 and another monitor on my GeForce GT 240 video card. I have one monitor on a DVI and another monitor on VGA. Every couple of minutes the computer shuts down. It can be anywhere from one minute to one hour or maybe not at all. My power setting or set to NEVER on both monitor and Sleep. I'm wondering if it can be my Video card that is shutting down my computer. I know Video cards, and RAM that can stop a computer cold. Or could it be something in Windows 8.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI built a custom PC about a month ago, and did a clean install of an OEM copy of Windows 8 with no problems. Upon launch this past Thursday, I downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store, which I like except for one problem:
Shutting down the computer by pressing the power button or "shut down" from the charms bar power menu shuts down Windows, but leaves the computer itself on and running, case fans spinning and all. Oddly enough shutting down the computer using the menu I get by right-clicking the new start button shuts down the computer properly, and that is the only way to do it without flipping the computer's power switch. That said, I would still like it to work 100% properly.
I was using my son's laptop (hp 255) as mine is in for repair and thought I would install windows 8.1 onto his system as a free upgrade (bought in march this year running windows 8) Unfortunately the power failed whilst the update was installing and now I can't boot up the computer and he did not create a system repair disk I have looked at safe mode (turn on and press esc) and that will bring me to various options - I have tried restore and it appears there are no restore dates available..
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop that's only about 5 months old and runs Windows 8. When I had to pack it up to go, I went to shut it down, and it started doing the windows update. I closed the laptop, packed it up, and left. When I start it back up, I see a screen with two options: Troubleshoot and Power off your PC. When I click trouble shoot, this is what I see:
Refresh your PC, and Reset your PC, Advanced options.
When I click refresh my PC, it says "The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again.
When I click reset, it says, "Unable to reset PC. A required drive partition is missing."

When I click System restore, it says I need to restart the PC, and select an OS and then select system restore, but I have no clue how to do that.
SIR says "The system cannot find the file specified (0x80070002)
Auto Repair says that it cannot fix my PC. No reason why.
This is the 5th time I've had the charms not showing up forcing me to shut down then computer by using the button in the front of the thing. what do I do to fix this so if the same thing happens again, the charms do come up.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've had my windows 8 computer since December and for the past month or so it will not restart or shut down unless I do a hard shut down with the power button. When hitting restart it starts to shut down, then comes up with "restarting" screen and just stays there, never moves from there. On shut down it just freezes after closing down windows. It can't be good always shutting down via the power button. I haven't added any new programs at all so not sure why this started happening.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell XPS 8700 Desktop, has 8GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive, running Windows 8.1 which I had installed the day it came out..the PC I purchased in September 2013..for the past few weeks I have noticed how when I shut down the pc that it can take up to 4 minutes to shut down, the monitor will go black but the power button the tower will remain white til it turns off, it used to turn off in a matter of seconds, now its minutes..same issue for restart, takes about 3 minutes to restart and no one from Dell can figure out what the problem is..all I had installed in December were updates from microsoft thats it, other than that nothing new has been installed. Yesterday I got a notification from Dell on my PC notifying me that I should update my BIOS which was A4 to A6 which I did and still the same issue..talked to five technicians and no one can figure it out, been told maybe its software related and I need to reformat the hard drive, I feel that would be a waste of time, if there was an actual cause I would do it, but to format my hard drive with no known cause of this problem would be stupid, it would just happen again.

I am sitting with a Windows 8.1 notebook that does not allow me to do Windows updates at all. I get an error message that NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal operation.
I do not want to reload the OS, but need to have this issue resolved asap.

You see his laptop is in a constant rebooting session it keeps trying to reboot and reboot and reboot. And gives me that error message above. I CANT NOT, I REPEAT CANNOT GET TO THE OS SYSTEM meaning that i cant get to the start menu or anything like that. Also when i tried to select automatic repair it tries to load it then gives me the same error above. The Computer my friend has is a HP Spectre XT running windows 8 64 bit. Also the only thing, I could get to is the boot menu which has the OS boot manager which keeps rebooting and stuff. Then select a EFI file from the hard disk drive.

It would not boot up, and when I started it the BIOS showed a '3F0 hard drive not exist' error. I left it until this morning, and tried again. Everything booted up and it reached the Windows 8 login screen -- I have automatic login enabled, but the screen freezes (spinner indicator stops suddenly) and the screen goes black. It restarts again, and sometimes I get the Windows 8 repair screen, sometimes I get the 3F0 error again.
The inconsistency makes me think that something is screwed up hardware-wise, but I'm not totally sure. Apparently, from reading online, the problem could be the HDD (I don't think this is the case) or a poor cable connection (most likely), or a software problem.
Because I don't have recovery media for Windows 8 (I installed it on a USB drive I don't have with me) I can't try a system refresh or restore, but I'd rather avoid those if at all possible.
Do you all think that a good option might be to take it to a hardware repair place and have them check the cables for errors?

View 9 Replies View RelatedWhile trying to add folders to the Search Index, I was informed the Windows Search process was not started. When I go to the Services Console and attempt to manually start, I am given the error:
"Windows could not start the Windows Search service on Local Computer.
Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified."
So I opened an command prompt with administrative level access to run sfc and received the following error after it was complete:
"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windirLogsCBSCBS.log. For example C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log. Note that logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenarios."

What other way, aside from a repair install, do I have to fix my missing files and services?

Every few days I get a blue screen if death error message and have to reboot my computer. The error messages are rarely the same. Today's message was Page_fault-in_nonpaged_area (igdkmd 32.sys), however, as I said, I receive many other messages. I have googled the various messages and the usual advice is to disconnect my various bits of hardware (printer, scanner, external hard drive, router and Inport {for recording from a turntable). I am supposed to see whether the BSOD appears after each piece of hardware is removed. This isn't practical as the errors aren't occurring consistently or every day so I wouldn't easily be able to tell which hardware is causing the problem.
View 14 Replies View RelatedRecently I decided to go ahead and update to the Windows 8.1 version of the Realtek HD Audio Driver. I procrastinated because it told me I'd have to uninstall the original audio driver and I knew it would take a while to do everything needed. It didn't work that after uninstalling the original audio driver, then restarting like Windows told me to do, I kept getting error messages that forced my computer to restart until eventually my computer let me log in and install the updated audio driver.
However, with the updated version of this driver I had the same issue I got with the original one only much much worse. The original Realtek HD Audio Driver that I had on my computer made music and videos sound absolutely awful when headphones were plugged in. I found out that this is because the driver automatically puts on so-called "enhancements" whenever headphones are plugged in. This was a very simple fix, simply go to "Sound", then under "Playback" you click on "Speakers", then go to "Enhancements" and check the box labeled "Disable all sound effects." Then sound through headphones would return to normal.
Well, with the Window 8.1 version of this audio driver, I can do the same thing, but it never stays that way. Every time I plug in my headphones, it resets back to having enhancements. The strange thing though is that it says the enhancements are disabled but when I reactivate the enhancements(No difference in sound quality) then deactivate it again, suddenly the sound through my headphones is back to normal.
Did the audio driver not install properly? Is there something I can do to permanently disable the audio enhancements?
I'm using Windows 8 Professional (got it from MSDNAA as soon as it appeared there ) and it seems to me that Windows 8 doesn't really shut down properly. I attached an image taken with Snipping Tool and it showed that the CPU up-time is 4 days etc etc..
The inconsistency here is, I just booted up my laptop few minutes ago. I did shut down my laptop properly every time. The only explanation here is that this 4 days ago was the day when I placed my battery back into the laptop.
But the laptop supposed to shut down PROPERLY right?
Yesterday while I was sleeping, a thunder struck nearby my house while my PC was running. After that I immediately switched the PSU from 1 to 0 without trying to shut it down properly. Since then I cannot shut down my PC without switching off the PSU. To tell you exactly what happens, I press the shutdown button in Windows 8.1 normally, after that it shuts down for around half a second, turns back on for half a second and then again turns off for half a second. After that it powers back on. I forgot to mention that my integrated network card on the motherboard died after the lightning as well. My MOBO has some kind of electrostatic discharge protection as well. Last thing, when I booted up my PC for the first time after I turned it off by switching off the PSU, it said "Setting thing up for you" like I started Windows for the first time.

My windows 8.1 cant shut down. the indication is, if i plug my flashdisc it can't be detected. if that thing happen, my windows 8.1 will not shut down !

View 2 Replies View RelatedFor the past 2 weeks (approximately), when I click "Shut Down" on my Win 8 laptop, nothing happens. If I click "Sleep," it goes to sleep right away, but it will not shut down. I see by the forum posts that my problem isn't unique. I have tried all three methods described in the post: [URL] .... - all to no avail. I have also tried Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do and unchecked Turn on fast start up as other posts have suggested.
In Method 2 described in the post above, I ran sfc /scannow and ended up with the following result:
